Nicki Minaj Talks New Single & Reaction To Forbes Iggy Azalea Article On The Breakfast Club Morning Show
Just when some folks thought Nicki was sleeping and being “oddly quiet,” she dropped a hot new single this morning that’s sure to get some major spins on the radio.
While promoting the new track, titled “Pills N Potions,” she phoned in to the Breakfast Club Morning Show to dish on the inspiration behind the song, as well as what continues to motivate her to put out music and what we should expect from her next album.
Of course, it wouldn’t be right if she wasn’t asked for her reaction to Forbes Magazine’s latest article, which claimed that since Nicki has jumped out of the lane of making pop-infused radio-friendly hits, newcomer Iggy Azalea is now running Hip Hop.
Catch what she had to say about that and more in the highlights below:
On her new single “Pills N Potions”
I was just reflecting on people, people in my life who’ve come and gone, and just thinking what does it all mean.
On if she subliminally referenced her former hairstylist who is suing her in her new song
God bless him. I’m talking about lots of people. It’s not about anyone in particular but I have come across a lot of people that I have given amazing opportunities to who continue to bite the hand that feed them. I always give people enough rope to hang themselves with. I just live my life and try to be super fair to everyone, so when you cross me it’s just like really? Hmm, okay. It is what it is.
On why she went back to her old image
I don’t know. The album is more personal so the look being stripped down goes really well with the third album. I always planned to do it at this time. It didn’t just come about now; I just always thought my third album I would want to go back to my real hair.
On if she’s surprised that there hasn’t been a lot of new female rappers who are doing their thing since she came out
I feel like I have opened that door in the industry. To be honest, I think there are women that do their thing and for whatever reason they don’t get the recognition. But that’s something you have to take up with pop culture and it has nothing really to do with me. I can’t really speak for anybody’s grind or how pop culture receives people. To answer your question, no I’m really not surprised because even when I was grinding and putting out tapes and stuff, it was hard for me. It takes a lot of work. Nothing just happens overnight. It’s not a female friendly business. Hip hop is not female friendly at all.
On if there will be more hardcore rapping on her new album
No, I don’t want to label what I’m doing. This isn’t about is it a hardcore album. This is a meaningful body of work and I’m tired of labeling it. I’m not going to ever label my music again. It is what it is. You can tell from ‘Pills N Potions’ that I’m just creating music and the most important thing to me is to keep is truthful and keep it honest. Sometimes you’re going to feel like it’s hardcore and sometimes you may feel like it’s not. But as long as it’s good music then that’s really all that matters to me at this point.
On what’s motivating her
You know what? I’m just the type of person that’s never going to stop. I’m not going to ever stop until after having some babies. My motivation is the same as it always was. I was hungry and I’ll continue to be hungry and the only thing that might make me not hungry in rap is if God sees it fit one day to give me some babies.
On what she thinks of Forbes Magazine saying that she has been quiet and Iggy Azalea is now running Hip Hop:
[Starts laughing hard] Okkkayyy, I’m reloaded! All Forbes needs to be worried about is my finances and when I’m going to be selling MYX Fusions for $250 million. That’s all they need to worry about. We rely on hip hop connoisseurs and blogs for that kind of information, so we can appreciate that, but no thank you.
