I left my laptop at work yesterday, and although I didn't really need it over the weekend I figured I might as well go grab it so if I wanted to work from home or take the day off on monday I would have it. I work in an office building, and usually there is no one there on the weekends except for the security guard and the janitors. I mean there are other companies in my building that work on Sat. but for the most part everyone in my office works M-F. Well as I am walking down the hall to my office I notice the janitor cart in front of one of my co workers office. I went to the lounge grabbed a cup of coffee and went to my office. There were a stack of reports on my desk that I didn't leave there so I started sifting through them and accidently spilled my coffe. I was irritated but I remembered the janitor was on my floor so I walk down the hall to my co workers office to ask him to clean up the mess. I opened the door and the male janitor was sitting on the desk getting topped off by my co worker who is also male. I have worked with this dude for the last 4 years, I am up for a promotion this year when one of the seniors retire. I have been working closely with this guy mentoring and grooming him to take my job when I get promoted. This cat is married with children and I never had a clue he was on the low. I went back to my office and about 5 mins. later he comes in and starts telling his story and begging me not to go to my boss with what I had just witnessed.
If I go to my boss with this info and this guy gets canned, I jepordize my promotion because I need to have someone ready to fill my position before they will move me up. This is a smart guy and have 4 months of training invested in him, I really don't feel like starting from scratch with someone else. If I don't rat the guy out, it is going to be real uncomfortable working around him knowing what I know. his wife and I are good friends to, and we have all went out together and had dinner, hung out, she even came to Fl with us for week. I have all weekend to decide what I am going to do, any constructive responses would be appreciated.
