T-Mobile’s next move could be devastating for AT&T and Verizon

FCC Takes a Whack at Phone Unlocking Ban -- Now It's Congress's Turn

VIA EFF - Link

DECEMBER 17, 2013

Last week, facing pressure from the Federal Communications Commission, the major wireless carriers promised to unlock mobile devices so that they can be used on other carriers' networks when the customer's contract has expired. This follows the outcry early this year over the Library of Congress's decision to remove legal protection against Digital Millennium Copyright Act suits for people who unlock their devices to change carriers. We're happy to see the FCC take a stand and demand action from the wireless carriers, although the root of the problem—the DMCA's broad and inflexible ban on circumventing digital locks—remains for Congress to fix.

while this is a win for consumers the issue is that the bands that different carriers use for 4g and LTE services are often different. as it stands right now an att LTE phone will not not work on t mobile LTE bands and vice versa. the voice will work and slower data might work on base GSM. but 4g and LTE will not work.

:lol: man you can use up those 200mb in on day

How much free data are the other carriers giving out?????

yeah tmobil is trash

Tmobile is not the greatest at anything but they are very good at several things especially at giving consumers options that the big three don't give.

*****Edit*****

They are fuckin awesome in Chicago tho

:dance::dance::dance::dance:

Does Tmobile even have LTE coverage? No fucking way I am going back to regular 4g coverage, I don't care how cheap it is.

the other silly thing about this article is that att is trying to move away from the contract model with their phone leasing option. which means that people are now paying for the phone over time or paying full retail upfront.

att no longer wants to subsidize equipment. they are pushing that shit hard. so if a customer is leasing a phone from att how likely are they to jump ship. interesting question to ponder.

if they already own the phone and can unlock it who knows what they will do.

but I will say this wireless is changing fast.

As much as folks like to crack jokes and shit on MetroPCS, they changed the game. All this no contract stuff didn't start 'til they came along and shook things up.

I wish this was true. But Verizon where Im from coverage is superior. People with T-Mobile I know always complaining about down coverage and dead spots. They need to work on there network and invest there, rather then spending money on a handful of people willing to give up there service with the larger carriers. I just hope this gets Verizon thinking about reducing there high cost to there customers

they'll get me when they have better coverage.
I have unlimited data (No throttling),4g hotspot, dope coverage and my bills only 110 with big red.

Too often T-mobile service is horrible. I still use them because i haven't reach that breaking point where I am just fed up of them.

The wife got T-Mobile, service out side of city centers suck. I'm unlimited Verizon, so i'll keep paying full price for phones and enjoying my coverage.

I drive 40 minutes one way to work, when i had Tmobile 25 minutes of that i wouldn't even have any service at all and at work i was lucky to get one bar. With Verizon not only do i have service 98% of the places i've been but it has been 4GLTE service, i'll stick with my 4GLTE UNLIMITED DATA service:dance::dance:

I guess its official now!

LAS VEGAS — At last year's Consumer Electronics Show, T-Mobile's then relatively unknown CEO John Legere took potshots at AT&T saying the rival carrier's coverage was "crap."

A year later, Legere is no less outspoken but now a much better-known maverick, even more so since Monday night, when AT&T kicked him out of a CES party it was having with rapper Macklemore.

T-Mobile all these months has taken a number of steps to help disrupt the wireless industry. It did away with ironclad wireless contracts and overages. It relaxed upgrade policies and made international roaming free. It added the iPhone to its product lineup, along with tablets.

On Wednesday, Legere announced the latest path in its self-proclaimed "Un-carrier" strategy to eliminate industry pain points. T-Mobile will pay early-termination fees if you switch to its network from AT&T, Sprint or Verizon, giving consumers what Legere quips is a "Get Out of Jail Free" feature. "

T-Mobile will pay you $650 per line for up to five lines, which includes the price it will give you as part of an eligible trade-in on your soon-to-be-discarded device. T-Mobile insists this not a short-term promotion, but rather the permanent end of contracts.

How does it work? You trade in your current phone for instant credit (up to $300). Then, provided you are eligible, you can get a new device with no money down, no matter which handset you choose from T-Mobile's portfolio. You'll pay for whatever new phone you buy with 24 equal monthly payments. You might even make a bit of money if you trade in a recently purchased phone under a subsidized plan with your old carrier, since the trade-in value might be higher.

Meantime, you must mail (or upload) the final bill from your old carrier to T-Mobile, verifying the phone numbers you have ported over, and the early-termination fee that your "ex" is charging.

T-Mobile cited research that states that to date, 40% of families have been reluctant to switch carriers because of the hefty termination fees. Once that's been verified, T-Mobile will issue you a MasterCard debit card, up to $350 per device. In an amusing footnote, T-Mobile will even prepare a "breakup" letter you can share with your ex-carrier.

Of course, T-Mobile still must give potential customers reasons to switch. T-Mobile's nationwide 4G LTE network now reaches 209 million people in 273 metro areas, and claims that based on real-time speed tests, it is now the fastest in the country. T-Mobile added 4.4 million customers in 2013, a number that could climb with the elimination of early-termination fees.

T-Mobile also added more spectrum recently, and is now beginning to launch its even faster Wideband LTE service (20+20 MHz LTE), starting in Dallas.

"What we have now is a no-apologies network," Legere says.

I dont know what plan dood switched me to to save $20 but once I hit
2.5gb out of my unlimited it sent me a text saying my shit would be slowed. This shit is horrible never happened when I had my other plan with first 5gb high speed.

Who is your service provider? I got Verizon high ass, it's time for me to look at other options.

Tmobile is excellent in my area but I can't switch to them because I travel a lot and that's where tmobile does not shine. I'm cool with my aio wireless $40 plan using AT&T towers. I'm covered nationwide.

They are not paying it directly. Seems you will get a debit card for the amount in 8 weeks. Also, tmobile is making that money back by you trading in your phone, and buying a new phone from them, thus locking you into a contract on the phone that you finance.

$100 per Month with AT&T but their coverage is untouchable. I need that since I travel extensively. Need my shit to work and be fast whenever I am. Those companies begging you to switch need a track record of stellar service or I'll stick with my overpriced shit with no issues.

It's not a contract as you can pay the phone off at any time and walk away. No different than anyone else currently either by that aspect. Besides as he pointed out, if it turns out you hate the service AT&T will pay you to come back.

After visiting the Tmobile website and seeing what they have to offer, I see there deal is bullshit, and actually I would be paying more in the long run with Tmobile and with inferior coverage. Only way possible to save money with Tmobile is to buy the phone at full retail price. If not you have to pay it in 24 payments of $24 dollars for the phone I wanted, times that by 3 cause I have 3 phones in my account. That would make my bill about $25 more then I pay with Verizon. I have a family plan on Verizon, no way is it feasible for me to buy 3 smartphones at about $650 each to join Tmobile.

Yup. That's why I'm still on Verizon.
