World's smallest college football player makes his debut

For Rice running back Jayson Carter, it was just another play. Even if it was the first of his college career.

Carter, at 4-9 the smallest player in Football Bowl Subdivision, made his collegiate debut Saturday with a 1-yard carry late in the fourth quarter of the Owls’ 45-7 win over UTEP.

“When you practice every day, it’s like clockwork,” said Carter, a sophomore from KIPP Academy. “I wasn’t really thinking about it. It’s just one carry.”

On second-and-8 from the UTEP 41 with about six minutes to play, Carter carried on what was supposed to be an inside zone run. Carter didn’t find any running room, so he ran to the outside for a 1-yard gain.

“I did what I was supposed to … I didn’t get negative yards,” Carter said.

Carter, who was born with a genetic disorder that hindered his growth, has spent the past three seasons working the Owls’ scout team.

“That young man is here every day busting his tail on the scout team. He deserves it,” Rice coach David Bailiff said. “I’m thrilled we got Jayson into a Division I football game.”

Carter received a loud ovation as he left the field.

What did his Rice teammates tell him on the sideline?

“They asked me why I didn’t score,” he said.
