Won passes to Red 2 (opens around July 19th) and checked it out yesterday (July 10th). Fun little action-comedy. Crowd seemed to like it (everyone most mostly 20 - 50 in the crowd) compared to other types of screenings wherein the ages can range from 13 - 70. No T&A. Mary-Louise Parker was kinda lame. Catherine Zeta-Jones can get the fuckage. Bruce Willis still doing the action hero thing. John Malkovich for the comic relief. Good to see Anthony Hopkins in anything. Good action sequences with Lee Byung-Hun. I haven't seen the first Red movie, so I'll need to go back and check that one out from recent years. Watch the trailers & gauge if it's for you.

I'm a fan of the 1st one so I will see this.

About 1/2 way through the documentary Downloaded. Started it the other day. Pretty good in my opinion. A good look at how Napster got up and running, and the digitization of the music industry in general late-90s onward. I'd definitely recommend it for anyone who was plenty familiar with Napster, Kazaa, Bearshare & so on back in the day and how things have progressed over time, etc.

"Downloaded is a documentary film directed by Alex Winter about the downloading generation and the impact of filesharing on the Internet. A teaser of the film premiered at SXSW on March 14, 2012.[2] The feature film made its world premiere at SXSW on March 10, 2013, and is being shown at other film festivals around the world.[3][4] VH1 has partnered with AOL to widely distribute the film.[5] Financed in part by VH1, the film is scheduled to broadcast as a VH1 Rock Docs feature sometime in 2013.

This documentary film addresses the evolution of digital media sharing on the Internet. It features exclusive interviews with software developers and musicians about controversial filesharing software, and particularly Napster.[9] It follows Napster from its rise in 1998, through the swarm of lawsuits that ensued and to its acquisition by Rhapsody in 2011. Some of those interviewed include Henry Rollins, Billy Corgan, former record producer and Island Records founder Chris Blackwell, former Sony Music Chairman Don Ienner, former CEO of the RIAA Hilary Rosen, Beastie Boys’ Mike D and Noel Gallagher."

Finally got around to seeing Life of Pi and fully enjoyed it. People often talk about movies that are made for the big screen ... or big flat-screen TVs & blu-ray format ... this is one of them. Shit ... vibrant colors ... an intriguing story ... etc. Definitely recommend it for those who haven't seen it in 2012/2013. I might go back and read the book now, for real.

Pacific Rim

In Pacific Rim writer and Director Guillermo del Toro, takes all of the great things about the Godzilla films,
Voltron and The Shogun Warriors(I still mourn the loss of my long gone collection) and put them on the big screen,
in the biggest, boldest and fun films of the Summer.
Del Toro provides enough dramatic weight in several story lines involving the humans(Charlie Hunnam,Idris Elba,Rinko Kikuchi)
that pilot the 25 story high Jaeger robots, that take on the giant Kaiju monsters that come from a dimension at the bottom of the ocean.
Comic relief is provided by Burn Gorman and Charlie Day as two quirky scientists, and Ron Perlman as a Kaiju cadaver dealer.

Cliches and predictableness are heavy in the film, but definitely dont outweigh the masive amounts of fun i had.
Im looking forward to a sequel that will hopefully happen.

Killing Season

You would think and hope that John Travolta and Robert Deniro would choose a great script for their first film together, but
if Killing Season was their best option i wonder what the two toss aside and consider bad scripts.
For about 15 minutes i thought the film was going somewhere, but after that unintentional laughs abound not only from
Travolta's accent and Travel Gnome beard, but the way the two sadistically torture each other throughout the film.
The film trys to push messages about God,redemption and forgiveness, but its really just a bloody, predictable, mess.
Thanks for the luaghs though.

JB - Thanks for your takes on Pacific Rim & Killing Season. So much good buzz and box office $ for Pacific Rim so far. I was hesistant about checking out Killing Season.

Haven't seen any flicks for a bit. Gonna get caught up on some documentaries & porn. Did win passes for Blue Jasmine next Thursday evening ... gonna see if we can parlay it into seeing something else once we're there (per usual).

They say Andrew Dice Clay gives a pretty good performance in the movie.

Saw "The Conjuring" Saturday night and it's a really good movie. Requisite scares and "boo moments" but still just a good movie in total.

Thanks for the intel, JB. Gonna link Clay's comments regarding Charlie Sheen from a year or two back later on here ...

Been hearing and reading good reviews, B ^

Right on, bro. Been hearing it was pretty good - believe we saw Iron Man 3D the night of the screening, but still wanna get around to The Conjuring √

The Wolverine

Covering one of the most interesting chapters in the over 100 year life of the popular character Wolverine,
The Wolverine is far better than 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

With a more condensed and sharper story with some alterations to the story that played out in the comic
book,The Wolverine's mind is haunted by visions of Jean Grey who perished by his hands in
X-Men: The Last Stand,he has become a long bearded drifter.
He is given an offer to end his eternity from Ichirō Yashida,(Haruhiko Yamanouch) a man he saved during
the Nagasaki bombing in 1945.
Of course there are all sorts of complications from Shingen Yashida( Hiroyuki Sanada) Ichiro's son,Wolverine's
growing passion for Ichiro's granddaughter Mariko Yashida(Tao Okamoto),an arrow shooting Kenuichio Harada(Will Yun),
the Yakuza, the ninja clan The Hand and last but not least Viper(Svetlana Khodchenkova) as poisionous as she is beautiful.

At this point i cant think of anyone else that could portray Wolverine better than Jackman. He has made the character his own,
over the course of six films.
Jackman fortunately has tremendous chemistry with his female co-stars which includes Rila Fukushima as Yukio, Wolverine's
"bodyguard"

Most of the action in the film is rousing, and the dramatic scenes play out well.
Some scenes seem a bit repetitive at times.

In the end The Wolverine is an engaging adventure and im looking forward to the R rated DVD version of the film.

The Way, Way Back

Despite bullying put downs from his mother's boyfriend (Steve Carell ) introvert Duncan(Liam James ) still
may have one of the best summer's ever when he meet's Owen(Sam Rockwell), the owner of a water park called Water Wizz
Rockwell borrow's a bit from Bill Murray's character from Meatball's and is the film's standout among a fun and engaging
cast.
Pretty good dramedy about a summer in which everything changes.

Thanks HF Im hoping Blue Jasmine goes into wider release this week

Sure thing, JB. Are you able to check out matinees or advance screenings with your movies? You're always good with the newer films and your take(s) on them. Should be interesting on Thursday with Blue Jasmine. We're gonna grab a bite to eat afterward as there are plenty of restaurants in the area. It's one of the smaller, independent theaters ... so we're either gonna check it out, or see something else once we arrive. Glancing at the listings ... looks like The Way, Way Back ... Before Midnight ... 20 Feet From Stardom, and The Hunt are also playing. Some decent titles. Didn't hear back re: 2 Guns. I'd entered a few contests for that one @ other venues (for this week).

I used to attend a ton of advance screenings, but now they are always on odd nights or times and my schedule is definitely not what it was like a few years ago.If i feel a film is worth it i will travel to a smaller theatre.

Good shit, bro. Locally the screenings all tend to be on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at 7pm at about 5 - 6 theatres in various cities (all within 20 - 30 mins of each other). Occasionally they'll do 9 or 9:30pm screenings for unique engagements for some of the scarier flicks, etc. My only gripe with some of them is that they give you REALLY short notice, so that sort of fucks with you if you have other work & social commitments. Otherwise it's pretty dope. Been to countless screenings over the years, and shared 'em with friends and fam' too ... and I sure as hell wouldn't be paying $12 - 15 for some of these regular and 3D prices here as they gouge the fuck out of Canadians for real. Give me those $0.00 tickets and I'm good :)

Have you ever gone to a screening in which the film wasnt finished? Such a funny experience especially with films with tons of SFX. They throw in storyboards or stand in figures. I still get passes in the mail i give them away to co workers and friends.I always tell them to get there 2 hours before it starts, because they usually give out to many passes, plus they have to check your name and email confirmations.

Haven't been to any unfinished screenings yet, but did see an animated movie once that was on some form of bootleg dvd they ran off their laptop or some shit (judging from how they set it up at the start). That was odd and funny. All the screenings have been pretty good. They recommend we get there 1 hour early for our screenings, and they either mail you the passes, the email confirmation, or you can pick them up @ the sponsor. Definitely great to share with girlfriends, friends, family, coworkers, etc. Taken so many people to movies over the years. The most security we ever had was for The Heat (they showed it 5 weeks early) and Lincoln (3 - 3.5 weeks early). Not sure why they were pushing those movies so far in advance ... as they usually show movies on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays in lieu of Friday wide releases :D

2 Guns

When i watched the trailer for 2 Guns i dismissed it as just another arguing buddy, crime
action caper. The stars of the film are two of my favorite actors so i said why not give it a shot.
2 Guns is blessed with sharp and witty dialogue from Blake Masters, the writer behind the gone
to soon from Showtime series The Brotherhood. The other pluses for the film are the chemistry
between its two stars and the fact that it looks like they're having a good time.

DEA agent Robert Trench (Denzel Washington) Naval Intelligence Officer Michael Stigman (Mark Wahlberg)
rob a bank thinking it houses 3 million of drug lord Papi Grecos (Edward James Olmos) money.Instead they leave
the bank with 43 million plus and this draws all type of attention from the DEA,CIA,NAVY and lets not forget
the drug cartel.

The banter between the two leads is great,Washington more of a scolding father figure to Wahlbergs aiming to
please enthusiasm.
Also providing some menacing fun is Bill Paxton as Earl a sadistic CIA operative.
Paula Patton as DEA agent Deb Rees is sorely underused. So much more could have been done with her character,
but at least she provides some moments of alluring beauty.
The plot becomes more convoluted and preposterous as it nears its last 20 minutes, but by that time i was having to much fun
for those factors to bring the entire film down.

I would place 2 Guns right between The Lethal Weapon films and The Last Boy Scout.

Scale of 1-10 an 8½

Blue Jasmine

Cate Blanchett truly displays she is at the top of her game in Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine.
As Jeanette 'Jasmine' Francis she chose to be oblivious to her husband Hal's (Alec Baldwin)
shady business dealings and infidelity. Her oblivity lead to her sister Ginger (Sally Hawkins)
and her first husband, Augie (Andrew Dice Clay) losing their windfall by investing with Hal.

To go from great wealth and a life of leisure Jasmine easily chafes at having to move in
with her sister and her nephews, the mere sight of Ginger's fiance Chili (Bobby Cannavale) and having to work a 9 to 5
which comes with a sleazy boss Michael Stuhlbarg as Dr. Flicke
There is a great scene in the film in which Allen pulls in closely on Jasmine and the look in her eyes
as she completely zones out says it all: Is this what my life has become?

The film goes back and forth between the past and present and i in one hand disliked Jasmine because she is selfish, looks down upon
others and is very self centered ,and in the other hand i reluctantly rooted for Jasmine because she is obviously on the brink of losing all of her sanity
and particularly when she catches the eye of a wealthy suitor Peter Sarsgaard as Dwight Westlake and her old life of wealth may be within grasp.

Director Allen gets great performances out of the ecletic cast and never forgets to drop in some humor in whats really a tragic
story.
Definitely one of Allen's best films.

Man this is a no brainer, end of watch, trust me, 10x better movie, you'll love it.

Sure thing, Sturmars. End of Watch is an exciting movie ... it'll hold your interest. Saw it on the big screen last year and then about 6 - 8 months later on dvd.

Didn't see any screenings this past week ... but hoping to eventually get around to Pacific Rim, Elysium, Lovelace, and Jobs.

Assault on Wall Street. I downloaded this just based off what it was about. Started playing it and I see the director is Uwe Boll. So I kept watching and the movie was pretty good.

Mostly getting caught up on some tv of late.
