Oblivion is a 2013 science fiction film co-written, produced and directed by Joseph Kosinski and based on his unpublished graphic novel of the same name edited by Radical Comics.[6][7][8] It stars Tom Cruise, Olga Kurylenko, Andrea Riseborough, Morgan Freeman, Melissa Leo, Zoë Bell, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau.[9][10] The film was initially scheduled to release on July 10, 2013. Since the 3D re-release of Jurassic Park was set for a July 19, 2013 release date, the US release date was moved forward to April 19, 2013.[11] According to Kosinski, Oblivion pays homage to science fiction films of the 1970s.
Jack Harper (Tom Cruise) and Victoria Olsen (Andrea Riseborough) are soldiers stationed in Sky Tower 49, a military outpost in Earth's surface, 60 years after an alien invasion that shattered the Moon and nearly destroyed the planet. Their mission is to repair automated drones that exterminate the remaining alien scavengers ("Scavs") hidden on Earth. Jack and Victoria report to Sally (Melissa Leo), a military commander stationed in a tetrahedral structure in Earth's orbit called "The Tet", which controls the Hydro Rigs, machines that are extracting vital resources from the surface, and are being targeted by the Scavs.
Jack often has dreams of a mysterious woman, however he can not remember anything specific since for security reasons earth-stationed personnel have their memory blocked for the duration of their stay. He is fascinated by Earth's culture before the invasion, storing random objects he finds in a cabin near a lake. Victoria, on the other hand, doesn't care for what's below and prefers to live in Sky Tower, awaiting the end of their assignment and their return to a human colony in Saturn's moon Titan.
After nearly being captured by the Scavs, Jack finds a transmission beacon. Victoria decrypts the signal, which contains coordinates where nothing of interest is present, and Jack shuts it down. Shortly thereafter, a spaceship crash-lands at these coordinates. Although he receives orders from Sally not to investigate, Jack searches the area in his aircraft, and finds humans in cryo-pods, which are destroyed by a fleet of drones deployed by Sally. Jack is able to rescue one of the survivors, Julia Rusakova (Olga Kurylenko), whom he recognizes as the woman from his dreams. They return to the Sky Tower, where Victoria tends to Julia's wounds, and leave the next day to retrieve the audio log of Julia's spaceship, during which they are captured by the Scavs.
Jack is surprised to learn that the Scavs are actually a human resistance led by Malcolm Beech (Morgan Freeman), who reveals that Jack and Victoria were astronauts sent on an exploratory mission to Titan in 2017, alongside a group of scientists, including Jack's wife, Julia. En route, they found the Tet, an ancient extraterrestrial Artificial Intelligence. Their spaceship is pulled towards it and Jack severs the command module from the module containing the cryo-pods to protect Julia and the rest of the crew. Jack and Victoria are captured by the Tet when their section enters it while the rest of the ship automatically returns to a safe orbit around earth. The Tet creates an army of clones of Jack, which it used to invade the planet, reducing the human race to only Beech's group, and then brainwashed the clones to maintain the drones that were eliminating the last remnants of mankind while the Tet drained Earth's resources.
Beech initiated the re-entry of the orbiting cryo-pod modules for the fissile material it contains. Combined with the fuel cells recovered from the drones, a nuclear warhead is assembled. He intents to sent it into the Tet to destroy it, but he needs Jack's help to reprogram a drone for this task. Jack refuses to believe him, and decides to return to the Sky Tower, only to learn that Victoria has reported him as unfit for duty. Drones sent by Sally arrive and kill Victoria, but Jack is able to escape and decides to go into the a highly radioactive zone, where Beech said he'd find the truth.
Venturing there with Julia, Jack finds a clone of himself, stationed in Sky Tower 52, and returns to Beech's camp, where he agrees to help destroy the Tet. The camp is attacked by drones who had traced Jack there, and although Jack destroys them, the hijacked drone is damaged and Beech is mortally wounded. Jack then volunteers to smuggle the warhead into the Tet by pretending to deliver the cryo-pod containing Julia.
Inside the Tet, Jack confronts "Sally", a holographic projection of the Tet. Sally learns that Beech is in the cryo-pod, having requested to be present when the Tet is destroyed. Jack detonates the bomb, sacrificing himself and Beech, and finally destroying the Tet as well as disabling all the drones on Earth.
Several months later, Beech's men have spread through the planet in an effort to re-colonize it. Julia has relocated to Jack's cabin, where she lives with their newborn daughter. One day, she sees Jack-52 across the lake, and they lock eyes.
