MOVIES ~ Any of ya'll seen any good (or shitty) movies in recent weeks/months? Post reviews, feedback, movie news, trailers, recommendations, etc ...

Saw "Evil Dead" and if you like wild, gross out horror flicks, it's for you and I highly recommend it.

Thanks for the intel, Dave. Glad to hear it's been living up to the hype. Have heard some local reviews and they said it was a good, wild scare too.

Halfway through Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead (documentary). Quite good. Definitely recommend it for anyone who follow food/nutrition/health, and/or enjoyed Super-Size Me earlier in the 2000s.

Thanks for your review I will be heading to a theatre i havent been to in years because its the only theatre showing 42 and Disconnect the evils of the internet film which is also receiving great reviews.

Sounds good, JB. The audience seemed to enjoy the film. They did a good job balancing the on-field with the off-field. It would have been good to see a little more with the family (they briefly mention the birth of the couple's child). Good job in the portrayal from Chadwick Boseman, and from Harrison Ford as well (as we don't see him as much now in recent years as he gets older).

42

The film 42 focuses on only about 3 years of Jackie Robinson's life, which is a bit of a
disappointment since so much of his life was interesting before and after retiring from
baseball.Still 42 is a very strong film, with even stronger performances. Team executive
Branch Rickey (an almost unrecognizeable Harrison Ford),had his personal and financial reasons for
breaking Major League Baseball's color barrier by signing African American player Jackie Robinson.
Which in 1945 was completely unheard of and many balked at the idea.

The film thankfully doesnt try to sugar coat what followed. There wasnt some great Disney moment in which
Robinson was accepted by his fellow teammates, players on oppossing teams ,or people attending the games
Fortunately Robinson had the support of a loving wife (Nicole Beharie as Rachel Isum Robinson, African American sportswriter
Wendell Smith(Andre Holland) and Rickey who was a stern almost fatherly figure to Robinson.
There were some including Dodgers manager, Leo Durocher (Christopher Meloni) and Pee Wee Reese(Lucas Black)who felt if Robinson
had the goods he deserved to be on the playing field as much as any other man.

Director and writer Brian Helgeland hits all the right emotional chords. After listening to a relentless barrage of racial slurs from
Philadelphia Phillies, manager Ben Chapman(Alan Tudyk ) Robinson leaves the field and his outcry afterwards went right through me.One of
the most emotional moments i have ever seen on screen.
Chadwick Boseman as Jackie Robinson hits all of the right likeable notes. The supporting cast is terrific.
Robinson had to face racism not with his fists but to turn his anger around and beat the racists at their own game,by stealing bases
playing the game, and letting his talent shine through.

Scale of 1-10 an 8½

Disconnect

The title of the film Disconnect can mean many things. It can apply to the family in the film who can barely
have dinner together before returning to or being distracted by their mobile devices.Or the couple that have been
distanced by a tragic death. It can also be a command to the audience to put our mobile devices away,so we may have a
decent conversation,or actually look at the person we are out on a date with.

Incredibly strong performances from Frank Grillo,Andrea Riseborough,Paula Patton,Michael Nyqvist ,Alexander Skarsgard and Max Thieriot
(Jason Bateman is the standout) propel the film past it's predictable turns and weaknesses.
The film looks at the dark side of the internet. From illicit and explicit web cam chat sites, cyber bullying, catfishing, and fraud.
Cyber emotional friends and hard drives that store every keystroke and website you visit leads to all types of turmoil.
If the goal of the creators of the film was to make the audience reflect on their own trips around the world wide web
they succeeded. This is very watchable, intense and reflective film.

Good reviews, Joneblaze. Glad you liked 42 as well.

Oblivion2013Poster.jpg

Oblivion is a 2013 science fiction film co-written, produced and directed by Joseph Kosinski and based on his unpublished graphic novel of the same name edited by Radical Comics.[6][7][8] It stars Tom Cruise, Olga Kurylenko, Andrea Riseborough, Morgan Freeman, Melissa Leo, Zoë Bell, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau.[9][10] The film was initially scheduled to release on July 10, 2013. Since the 3D re-release of Jurassic Park was set for a July 19, 2013 release date, the US release date was moved forward to April 19, 2013.[11] According to Kosinski, Oblivion pays homage to science fiction films of the 1970s.

Jack Harper (Tom Cruise) and Victoria Olsen (Andrea Riseborough) are soldiers stationed in Sky Tower 49, a military outpost in Earth's surface, 60 years after an alien invasion that shattered the Moon and nearly destroyed the planet. Their mission is to repair automated drones that exterminate the remaining alien scavengers ("Scavs") hidden on Earth. Jack and Victoria report to Sally (Melissa Leo), a military commander stationed in a tetrahedral structure in Earth's orbit called "The Tet", which controls the Hydro Rigs, machines that are extracting vital resources from the surface, and are being targeted by the Scavs.

Jack often has dreams of a mysterious woman, however he can not remember anything specific since for security reasons earth-stationed personnel have their memory blocked for the duration of their stay. He is fascinated by Earth's culture before the invasion, storing random objects he finds in a cabin near a lake. Victoria, on the other hand, doesn't care for what's below and prefers to live in Sky Tower, awaiting the end of their assignment and their return to a human colony in Saturn's moon Titan.

After nearly being captured by the Scavs, Jack finds a transmission beacon. Victoria decrypts the signal, which contains coordinates where nothing of interest is present, and Jack shuts it down. Shortly thereafter, a spaceship crash-lands at these coordinates. Although he receives orders from Sally not to investigate, Jack searches the area in his aircraft, and finds humans in cryo-pods, which are destroyed by a fleet of drones deployed by Sally. Jack is able to rescue one of the survivors, Julia Rusakova (Olga Kurylenko), whom he recognizes as the woman from his dreams. They return to the Sky Tower, where Victoria tends to Julia's wounds, and leave the next day to retrieve the audio log of Julia's spaceship, during which they are captured by the Scavs.

Jack is surprised to learn that the Scavs are actually a human resistance led by Malcolm Beech (Morgan Freeman), who reveals that Jack and Victoria were astronauts sent on an exploratory mission to Titan in 2017, alongside a group of scientists, including Jack's wife, Julia. En route, they found the Tet, an ancient extraterrestrial Artificial Intelligence. Their spaceship is pulled towards it and Jack severs the command module from the module containing the cryo-pods to protect Julia and the rest of the crew. Jack and Victoria are captured by the Tet when their section enters it while the rest of the ship automatically returns to a safe orbit around earth. The Tet creates an army of clones of Jack, which it used to invade the planet, reducing the human race to only Beech's group, and then brainwashed the clones to maintain the drones that were eliminating the last remnants of mankind while the Tet drained Earth's resources.

Beech initiated the re-entry of the orbiting cryo-pod modules for the fissile material it contains. Combined with the fuel cells recovered from the drones, a nuclear warhead is assembled. He intents to sent it into the Tet to destroy it, but he needs Jack's help to reprogram a drone for this task. Jack refuses to believe him, and decides to return to the Sky Tower, only to learn that Victoria has reported him as unfit for duty. Drones sent by Sally arrive and kill Victoria, but Jack is able to escape and decides to go into the a highly radioactive zone, where Beech said he'd find the truth.

Venturing there with Julia, Jack finds a clone of himself, stationed in Sky Tower 52, and returns to Beech's camp, where he agrees to help destroy the Tet. The camp is attacked by drones who had traced Jack there, and although Jack destroys them, the hijacked drone is damaged and Beech is mortally wounded. Jack then volunteers to smuggle the warhead into the Tet by pretending to deliver the cryo-pod containing Julia.

Inside the Tet, Jack confronts "Sally", a holographic projection of the Tet. Sally learns that Beech is in the cryo-pod, having requested to be present when the Tet is destroyed. Jack detonates the bomb, sacrificing himself and Beech, and finally destroying the Tet as well as disabling all the drones on Earth.

Several months later, Beech's men have spread through the planet in an effort to re-colonize it. Julia has relocated to Jack's cabin, where she lives with their newborn daughter. One day, she sees Jack-52 across the lake, and they lock eyes.

The wife has been my road dog for all the good horror movies since we got together but she was freaked out by "Evil Dead". That's the highest recommendation I can give.

Just finished watching the "Moby Dick" two parter starring William Hurt, Ethan Hawke and Charlie Cox (Nuckies' boy in "Boardwalk Empire" that got killed off last season) and it was very, very good. Hurt was competing with my memory of Gregory Peck in the Ahab role from the 60s and he nailed it.

Looking forward to Oblivion

Funny quote from a review :

Right on, Dave. It certainly looks like a good scare √ Thanks for the intel on the 2-parter for Moby D too ^

Recent movies seen ...

Fathers of the Sport - enjoyed the doc' about playground legends and Rucker stars of yesteryear. Doc' runs just under 1 hour, 20 mins.

Here Comes the Boom - Watched it being a long-time MMA fan. It was mildly amusing at times, but generally found it pretty cornball. You know a comedy ain't hittin' right when you mildly smile or smirk, and do NOT find yourself laughing aloud. Bas Rutten did a good job in his role. Side note ... sort of felt the same about TED last year (Mark Wahlberg / Mila Kunis). People and some reviewers saying it was one of the funniest movies of all-time and some other propaganda, etc. It was funny in points, but fucking predictable - I.E. - you could see the jokes coming. That, in my mind, isn't the definition of hilarious. Hilarious or laugh aloud/out loud humor to me is when a comedy catches you completely off-guard ... is ridiculous ... and has you grinning/smirking even before the joke(s) is/are coming. Those wild-ass comedies that hit you with joke, joke, joke in rapidfire. These types of movies don't provide that. They're "mild comedies" (Here Comes the Boom, etc).

Thanks for the Here Comes the Boom review Helico-pterFunk I was actually going to see this in the theatre but something about the trailer annoyed the hell out of me.

Jindabyne

While on a fishing trip 4 men discover a woman's body in a river, but decide to continue their fishing trip.
What follows is outrage from the woman's family, the town, and their own families.
Mesmerizing and haunting with a few minor weak points in the story.

Bel Ami

To avoid a life of poverty a young man uses seduction to climb into high society. Not a great movie or script
but it is definitely entertaining and amusing at times.

JBlaze - Thanks for the new reviews. Won a copy of The Blair Witch Project on blu-ray this week. Gonna receive that one later in the month. Also look forward to checking out this movie (via online rental, lol) in the near future - http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/its_a_disaster/ .

Yeah - as for Here Comes the Boom. It tries too hard to be feel-good & humourous, but it's been done before (and better), as many of the reviews out there say. Formulaic, predictable. There's a few UFC cameos here and there, including a 2-second spot from Chael Sonnen. But overall I watched it ... just because, and being an MMA fan since the 90s.

I had a feeling Here Comes the Boom would try to hard. Its one of those movies that pops up on cable one day and watch it while your doing stuff around the house.

It's a Disaster comes out this weekend but i think its only playing in one or 2 theares in my area.

Berserk: The Golden Age II

Definitely check this out over the weekend, the first one was dissapointing, but man did they do an amazing job with the second. Soundtrack, animation, and pacing is 10fold better. The action scenes paticularly the main battle against Bascon's fortress was superbly done, am anticipating the English dubb as i prefer the English voices for this series, but otherwise, shit was a great watch, check it out. Leaves you in great anticipation for the next one.

Oblivion

No matter how many times i see it on T.V or in a film, the visual of a desolate big city, and it's
massive buildings and landmarks barren and partially intact can still inspire awe.
In Oblivion the aforementioned landmarks are buried in moss and grass covered
canyons,and waterfalls.

Oblivion is one of those films in which the visuals are so stunning and the SFX are so sleek,i have to
respect the hard work and i can partially forgive the films plotholes, multiple endings, and drawn out
guess what Sci-Fi movie we borrowed this scene from plot. The plot involves a drone repairman named
Jack Harper (Tom Cruise) who along with his communications officer and lover Victoria (Andrea Riseborough)
head an operation to extract any remaining resources left on Earth after a great battle with the alien Scavs
60 years ago in the year 2017 made Earth a wasteland.

Why is Jack having vivid flashbacks/dreams of another woman named Julia (Olga Kurylenko)?
Why are a group of people all dressed in black and lead by a man named Malcolm Beech (Morgan Freeman
wearing the coolest almost Darth Vader outfit ever!!)living underground?

The leads all do a fine job,but the semi love triangle between Cruise,Riseborough and Kurylenko
never feels believeable,no intensity just ho hum feel to it.

While Oblivion isnt a home run it's still interesting enough and stunning to at least make it to second base.
Im looking forward to reading the graphic novel on which the film is based.

Scale of 1-10 a 7½

Thanks for the intel, JB. I won passes to Oblivion last week but passed them to a coworker as I was unable to make it that evening.

Saw the documentary SOUL FOOD JUNKIES a few days back. Quite good. Runs just over 1 hour ... and there's some good back story about eating habits dating back to slavery ... peoples' perspectives today (whether choosing to eat soul food variety, or otherwise) and the director's inclusion of his own family (close to his sister & mom) and detailing his late father's long history of eating improperly, and developing pancreatic cancer in his 60s.

Also had a chance to wrap up watching season 1 of House of Cards (Netflix). Great series with solid online buzz. If you like stylish political dramas ... you'll dig this one. Solid role for Kevin Spacey.

When does part 3 drop?

When does part 3 drop?

Third one actually is out now, have just been waiting for the fan subs to come out, it was released over the winter in theaters. The only flaw i'd really say in the 2nd one, or in the series itself, is they are forced to leave out key scenes from the novels or even the previous anime series, which really leave out important character development for the audience, so while people that know the berserk story can really still fully comprehend everything, people new to the series are seriously missing out key story points.

Saw the documentary Sexy Baby. Quite good. It runs just over 1 hour, 20 mins & documents 3 subjects. The doc' focuses on sexuality, marketing, the cyber/DIGITAL age, and how everything is so fast in today's day and age. The subjects include a smart, well-spoken kid who is 12 going on 13 at the start (14 by the end of the doc'), a 23yo, and a 32/33yo woman named Nichole (Nakita Kash). The young person is coming up in the digital age (the effect(s) of Facebook, etc) ... the 23yo is preparing to undergo labiaplasty, and the 33yo is an adult performer (husband works in the biz as well) and she still strips, and they book talent for the dancing circuit and are looking to have a child (he's 40).

Kane,

How did you like it? Watched Django with my pops a few months back and he wasn't really feeling it. Found it was a bit all over the place ... trying to be too many things ... and too long at 2 hours, 45 mins. Sorta felt the same too.

Had free tickets to the advance screening of The Big Wedding yesterday. It had some funny parts, and shit ANA AYORA's body is worth the price of admission. She broad daylight skinnydips into a lake and shows the right titty, side profile, and ass. Body is legit - I need to look into more of her pictures - http://www.imdb.com/name/nm3065524/?ref_=tt_cl_t12 . If you liked Father of the Bride from the early-90s, you'll like this one. That kind of humor. Deniro was funny.

Been catching up on archived episodes of the Dave's Old Porn (Showtime tv series) - funny shit.

yeah it was long ass. it was ok. the plot was kinda dumb. could have saved alot of drama if they didn't be all underhanded and lying.

Tarantino and people like him always try to make "epic" (that word is far too overused) films. Stylistic shit and whatnot. Couldn't really get into it given the subject matter. Hell ... pops said to me a few years ago - "Inglorious B' was cool and all, but think about all the DUMB people out there in the world who probably thought this movie was based on a true story." Kinda off in Django hearing 2Pac and Rick Ross on the score/soundtrack too, etc. Always been a fan of Christoph Waltz' though ... that cadence and sing-songy delivery even when he's playing a badass (especially in Inglorious).

No doubt ... it's just simple formulaic fun with a good cast. Took a friend and we were shooting the shit and catching up on old times and having a few laughs. The T&A from shorty was a bonus. Body was right

Finally got around to seeing "Paranormal Activity 4" and I liked it. I'm really enjoying this series. It's held up longer than "Saw" or "Final Destination". Those were done after the second (FD) and third (Saw) movies.

Dave - Saw the screening of Paranormal 4 back in October 2012. We enjoyed it. That's the thing with series/franchises like that ... you take them for what they are. Some quick scares. Simple fun :) - same goes for other movies like Sinister, and several others.

Movies seen of late ...

- Bigger Stronger Faster - documentary
- Neil Young - Journeys - music
- Asian Fixation - pizzorn
