I was about to post the same thing. I know a chick that sits at home all day sleep. She wakes up to get the kids ready for school so her friend can take them if she doesnt show up the kids dont go cause she feels she's too good for the bus even though she doesn't have a car. After the kids leave she watches tv and sleeps till they come home. Dosnt even attempt to leave the house. She's been on welfare for as long as ive known her and thats at least 5 years. She even got a house through assistance and was calling them cussing them out cause they were taking too long with the house. Her niece got pregnant and the first thing her and her sister did was sit her down and explain to her the ins and outs of welfare far as what to write on the application and what to tell them to get the most money.
A chick i worked with was with the company part time. They offered her full time with benefits and everything and she turned it down cause it would fuck up her check.
Not everybody is like this but dont act like they not out there.
Good idea, but watch at the awful execution.
Too many factors that tie into why kids have poor scores in the first place. But I don't disagree that parents should be more involved, or at least show more of a presence. I would like to think at the core this is what this is about. But this argument has been hashed to death here before.
OAN, I would like to say I see what James sees. All the time. And hell yeah it pisses me off. I don't care what may or may not be theirs. I got to contend with working and being afraid of furloughs and scared Sallie Mae gonna ask me for more money, while Qui Qui get to have three boxes of corn dogs, some 24 packs of cokes, crackers, cookies, and everything else that doesn't make a complete dinner.
I'd be content with just enough berries to last for a week.![]()
I've heard more black women who don't have children and have student loans say what you are saying. Of course, they don't admit it out in open.
They feel they have busted ass and did things right, so why should Qui Qui get help. I'm talking women in the 23-28 age range without children. Folks are graduating $30,000 or more in the hole while coming from the same backgrounds. Meanwhile, they are struggling despite doing things right.
They know they have relatives milking the system. It just seems a lot of women who made the right choices have contempt for those who didn't. They just rarely speak on it.

All actions are based on incentives... When these parents can't get the food they like (pop tarts, Doritos, Pepsi, etc) or have to eat less due to the child not performing or going to class MANY of them will respond.
You can't reward anyone for poor behavior.
I haven't read any of the comments in the thread, but if they giving out more welfare money for bringing home good grades, I don't see what the problem is. Thanks Obama!![]()

and you are holding the kids responsible for the actions of the parents..
creating another generation to fail ?
kids need nutrition to learn.....holding their nutrition hostage is setting them up not to succeed
I'll speak on it.
It's not so much as contempt because they made the wrong choices, I just don't understand why I can't get the same aid when I get MORE taken from me (taxes, insurance, etc). If the whole purpose was to get you on your feet and to TRY HARDER if you really need the help give it to those that are actually trying. I'll even go so far as to put this on college students, who if lucky will maybe get 30 bucks in food stamps. What the hell you gonna do with 30 bucks a month on food?
But I don't want to derail, I just thought James was on point with some things. (For the record though, I don't see any good coming out of this bill.)
Those women wasn't tought the game right either. 4 years of basket weaving cost the same as a nursing degree, engineering degree and, computer science degree. I know the same type of women u speak of. Most of them think having a degree automatically means $100.000 a year.
The first simester 80% of them are going to be nurses. 4 years later most of them are graduating in elementary education or some bullshit business degree.

Black women get into nursing. It's quite common. They still have loans to pay back. They still sacrifice. Women in general don't take engineering or computer science. A lot of women tend to go to business, social work, or education.
Regardless, they still have to pay back loans. They still have to struggle. Meanwhile, they probably know relatives getting over.
It's too much of a broad stroke right now. Every situation ain't the same. Kids do need nutrition but don't act like you havnt been behind a chick with two carts full of cookies chips and ghetto juice. Get to the counter and pull out her ebt card pay for her shit then hand it off to her friend standing in line right behind her so she can pay for her cart full of bullshit to.
I get what your saying, but it still comes down to choices. We have a high ass out-of-wedlock birth rate(which is a choice). Women who make the right choices aren't celebrated. People don't want to hear about the struggles of a college-educated black woman who doesn't have kids.
Where are all the stories about childless black women struggling with student loans? Good luck with that television show or movie. Meanwhile, if you were to have a kid at 18 and struggle, you become a hero. Go figure.

dont get me started on the EVEREST scam
damn school (not even a school, not accredited for shit).
You go for 6months, and in debt $30,000, and you come out and barley qualified for a $9hr medical billing job.
and NOW cacs only gonna hire you for 32hrs a week, to avoid putting you on obama care/full time status. so you went to EVEREST for no point at all. (yet STILL owe that 30k that still accrues intrest, that you can NEVER bankrupt from. (for those who dont know, you can NEVER bankrupt student loans*)
Cuttign 30% from welfare wont hurt the kids..
First off the parents not spending the welfare money correct in the first place.
here in GA they did a story on those TANIF (or whatever u call it) debit cards.
kind of like those FEMA cards they gave out during katrina.
so since they started the new debit card route, the state gets to see where the money is being spent at.
guess where..
liquor stores
gas stations
strip clubs (yes really)
mary k
casinos (out of state, yes really)
bbq joints
and other hole in the wall spots.
folks need to wake the fuck up and relize, welfare and shit, its NOT suppose to be permeant.
guess who pays for that shit..... You do... (wait, my bad, only 50% of ya'll do).
But I got kids though![]()
But I get what you sayin. My life is pretty boring : work, homework, kids, sleep, repeat. Fun time like once a month, probly argue like every six weeks. Go fig.
Don't get me started. I got about 44 from them from their 'university' division. That's what I get for being bored and wanting to get ahead in life with a masters degree.
What I want to know though is how/will parents be helped to help their children be better students?
Kats need to stop bullshitin' with themselves....
Yes folks are generalizing but generalization also have truths. We all know folks (especially if ya grew up in and/or around the hood). People doing what this person is saying. We need to stop coming up with every excuse to keep our people down. Enough of the kid glove approach. We been doing that for too long now. Like republicans holding on the trickle down economics. In the end it aint helping us.
Didn't know you had children, but your views sound similar to many black women I have known who don't have children and have loans out the ass. It's crazy, but despite doing right, they wonder what they did wrong.
They are too young to see the benefits. They only see other people getting over while they are working hard. But that's a conversation they can't have during the holidays.

now why didn't that same state rep propose a bill that cut THEIR PAY by 30% if the districts they represent don't improve fiscally or lower the unemployment rate?
bad as this seems, it doesnt compare to corporate welfare.
A - make the schools shitty
B - punish the families who have to send their kids to the shitty schools for the bad grades that come from A
C - it was all a trick anyway.
It's not just white people brother. You might be surprised to know how many blacks think the same way. Pay attention to the responses that appear in this thread.

I live in a totally different state and still know dozens of people exactly like you just described. The sad thing is that we end up advocating for people like that and the cycle continues. Her kids will be exactly like her and the kids of them will be like them.At some point we have to take the titty away from the grown ass babies."Welfare" shoul be temporary anyway for any able bodied person. As it is, its paying for these mothers who are home all day who watch TV,feed their kids fast food, and couldn't care less about their studies.Like I said, PTA numbers in the hood is ridiculously low. Why? because they aren't involved or care.We can point to the schools, but immigrants are thriving in those same schools.IMO the family structure has more to do with scholastic success than the quality of schools. If the school curriculum was harder, many of those kids would still fail due to not being able to keep up.A kid that comes home, eats a Big Mac,then plays video games all evening and watches TV until 2am and wakes up at 7am really can't compete with a kid who comes home, eats a healthy home cooked meal,is assisted with homework for 2 hrs, then put to bed at 7pm to wake up at 7am.
A LOT of assumptions here.
Everyone here knows actual welfare is temporary, right? I can't be the only one who remembers the reform battles of the 90s.
for the record, this is not an attempt to attack black families. There are far more white folks on welfare than black folks.
and you best better believe that parents will be on their kids asses about doing well in school if it will effect their pockets. its about time someone took a stand to get parents back involved in their children's schooling.
