The only reason he used the staff in the book was because he was pretending to be squire to strong Belwas for a time while he was checking Daenarys out.
Since the dropped that angle, he can go straight to being a knight in the Queens guard. I agree with the other poster that this appears to be just something they had to cut out of the dramatization.
I wish HBO would start dropping the soundtrack at the start of the season instead of the end.

Season 1 cost 60 million total. HBO's budget for each episode was 6-8 million an episode for Season 2, although Blackwater episode cost 15 million. Season 3 episode's have a 15% increase in budget per episode due to major success.

I kind of figured Jon and Tyrion were Targaryens or half. Jon I think is Lyanna and Rhaegar's love child but Tyrion I can't figure his bloodline. When Tyrion says I have a soft spot for bastards cripples and broken things it foreshadowed in my opinion their importance in the song

I can see Jon possibly being a Targareyen (if Ned's sister had him with the Targareyen prince) and ned hiding the fact, cuz he was afraid for jon's safety if everyone found out. I dunno how Tyrion could be one though, especially with tywin's resources, he would've been eager to find that out and cast tyrion to the side like he wanted.
