* One of the most influential urban movies of all time, “Menace II Society” turns twenty this year as the co-director Allen Hughes spoke on the creative process behind the movie going through different audition tapes of O-dog which they initially wanted a generic “buff” male for the role but would pick Larenz Tate based on how well he played the character.

Sway jumps into asking Allen Hughes how he met Tupac not being from Oakland which Hughes said the two met in a bathroom stall in Oakland at a Waffle House the day before Raw Fushion’s “Rockin’ To The P.M.” At the time nobody knew who Pac was as the two were using the restroom at the same time where Pac wanted them to do his first music video “Brenda’s Got A Baby.”

Twenty fucking years...... I feel old as shit....Seems like yesterday....Saw that bitch at Randall Park Mall..........damn....

i remember staying up late to see it on hbo and absolutely enjoying the movie. i shouldn't have been watching it, i was too young but i did... own this movie. movie is up there are far as required viewing. i knew so many people like the people in this movie, just living in the "hood"
20 years later and shit really hasn't changed all that much from then

Ending w/ him speed crawling to the kid still fucks me up

Ending w/ him speed crawling to the kid still fucks me up

that and the narration with it helped shape me believe it or not.

i decided at that young age i did wanna live, i didn't want to be like him.. i didn't want to front like i didn't value my life when i actually did.

this doesn't mean that i had to be a square, or a punk

but it did mean that i didn't play with my life, like he did fronting trying to be hard

SN: I was watching Fresh earlier. Why was he crying when he went to go play chess w/his pops at da end of da movie???

Man the stress/pain of all the shit he just finished getting thru was too much to bear...from the girl getting shot on down til the end...dude just finally had time to just break down + react after all was said and down

another favorite

that was the perfect ending.

think about all the shit fresh did, how he lived, what he had to do. how he had to save his sister
lost his best friend
went up against a drug dealer
all the shit he did during the movie he carried his like a man he handled his business
throughout the movie we forget 1 thing that, that scene brought home.

at the end of the movie he was crying because... fresh was just a little boy
he did all that shit and that gets lost in the shuffle
he was a little boy crying cause he was hurting, and crying to his daddy.. the one who supposed to comfort him.
he was just a little boy man :smh:

that shit fucked with me too

that's how i saw it.

Shorty was overwhelmed

Shit he just had to go through to get his sister back, getting Fring caught up, fat joe lookin ass friend etc. etc.

I think he wanted to tell his pops about all the ill shit that just went on, but he knew he couldn't or maybe he was scared to so that's when the tears came.

Sam looked both shocked & saddened to see his son like that and it's like he knew all they had was those chess games in the park.

Really touching scene.

And if Fresh was about a little white kid who had to survive and thrive thru all that shit it would have been a HUGE oscar winning movie:smh:

peep a review of it from 1994

Fresh, who's all of 12, is sensitive, soft-spoken, loyal—and as cold-blooded a street operator as the murderous dealers for whom he runs ''bricks'' of heroin. There's shocking resonance to the notion of a grade-school boy who's become a criminal out of sheer pragmatism. And Sean Nelson, who plays Fresh, is a wondrous young actor. If only the movie were as subtle as he is. After a rich, anecdotal first half, Fresh, inspired by the lessons of his derelict-chess-whiz father (Samuel L. Jackson), ends up setting his own human chess game in motion. You may not believe a minute of it, though you won't forget Nelson's face.

i wouldn't put the wood in the same category
that one had dramatic moments but it was ultimately light hearted

replace that one with south central and you're on to something

Friday isn't in the same category as menace & boys in the hood either.

But a lot of 90 hood movies based on LA are classics.

Fresh & juice are great NY classics.

We're movies simply written better back then, or what.

I find Juice to be terribly overrated. Somewhat boring even. :smh:

But yeah, movies were definitely written better back then. Had to have been. Shit, even TV shows were better back then. Just look at NY Undercover or somethin' like that for proof.

True.

I can still watch NY undercover to this day and enjoy it. I think juice gets so much acclaim is for how well Pac played bishop.

I HATE YOU!!

I HATER YOU TOO LIL NIGGA

and yes movies back then were more interested in being real and being true as opposed to subscribing to a formula.

i agree with shorty on juice... that shit was just ok to me at best.

think of how ill the writing was in dead presidents...

they don't even try to make movies that ill today with black people involved.

How you gonna leave out "who got snaps on the petro"...?
