Are You Prepared For A 'Culture Fit' Job Interview?

What you do off the clock might matter more than what you do while on it.

Well, you finally earned that college degree from Enormous State University and landed an interview with that company you've dreamed about for years. Your suit is cleaned and pressed and your hair looks like you just got out of the barber's chair. You have done your research, know your worth and you're so sure of yourself that you're ready to negotiate a salary. You've rehearsed answers to every possible question and delivered them with confidence.

But then you are asked:

What is your favorite movie?

What's the last book you read?

Where's the last place you went on vacation?

What TV shows do you watch most often?

They are questions that you wouldn't hesitate to answer on a date or when you're trying to get a phone number, but in this setting, on a job interview, you're thrown. The reality is that they are becoming more common by the day.

The term "culture fit" has turned into a popular buzz word among human resource professionals. The idea is that for a company to remain functional, let alone profitable, its employees must be on the same page or at least in the same chapter. So if you're looking for a job in IT and you have all the necessary skills, you still may be passed over for someone who has more in common with the staff already there. It's like the guy who never came to class but could charm the teacher into giving him an A.

With the job market forcing more companies to be creative and strategic with their hires, it's important to prepare for the "culture fit" queries. Knowing how to answer the question can be more valuable than having the right answer.

Here's how to approach some "culture" fit questions from Mergers and Acquisitions and About.com.

(For the record, if you are asked to name your favorite movie, please, never, under any circumstances, say Menace II Society.)

Just another tactic to dance around race. As a black man, I do not share the same interest as my white coworkers.

If my talent and qualifications make me a good fit why dismiss me because I'm not familiar with Seinfeld?

:hmm::hmm::hmm:

This....yeah they are definitely trying to weed out foreigners and minorities....

Racism is 100% about being able to deny resources to individuals based upon race....

ETA: another reason why we need our own......

:yes::yes::yes:

They are trying to throw all type of shit against the wall hoping something sticks

:smh::smh::smh:

In the meantime the US is losing it's competitiveness globally

The fucking titanic is sinking

:smh::smh::smh:

glad i decided to skip that whole job market crap

That shit is not going to weed out any foreigners.

Most foreigners are tech or advanced skill and have to get the job before getting here H1 visa.

That shit is targeted towards African Americans

Ditto!! But, if you're at that job interview and those questions are brought up, how to you respond? Play the game and say "I love 'The Office', and reruns of 'Seinfeld' and 'Frasier' (when you really like reruns of 'A Different World' and 'Martin')", or push back and ask how the question is relevant to the position for which you are applying, which could make you look "difficult".

:smh::smh::smh:

But they'll know you're black once you get to the interview, if not before. Unless they're trying to weed out certain "types", and only have other "types".

This accomplishes two things.

#1. It reinforces systemic racism.

and

#2. It walks back workers rights to the benefits of the corporations.

glad i decided to skip that whole job market crap

Wish I could. I don't have none of da resources to do so. Da odds are heavily stacked up against us out here, fellas. And as it was said, this shit is targeted towards "us", not foreigners.

That's exactly what they want, this 'Culture Fit' is designed to lure in the Herman Cain's and Carlton Banks of the black community.

:hmm::hmm::hmm:

you dont have to share their interest but you should be well rounded enough to be able to tolerate their interest or interest or other people you may come in contact with. that is why they make you take all those stupid classes like art and music appreciation as a freshman in college

Bullshit questions hr makes up to fuck with people so they can laugh about it at the water cooler, asking what movies and music one listens to is irrelevant whether you will get along with the person or not

they are not really looking for an answer to the question they are looking at how you react to curve balls if you will

Been on plenty of tech interviews as I am a Web Developer at a big company.
Usually they interview you over the phone first to see if they want to bring you in.

If they give you a face to face it's gonna come down to how you fit into the group or if they are desperate for help and need people then if you get along it may not matter as much

bottom line
Yes this tactic is used to exclude -- the reasoning is you are gonna spend 40+ hours a week together it helps to have some commonalities and enjoy each others company it makes the day go by faster

It's not right but it's the game - and it's played by their rules - not ours

Usually the people who do this love what they do so they share that in common regardless of race - it's a starting point and what I usually talk about --- '

I dont discuss Hip Hop with my coworkers or problems of the inner city- (most of them hate hip hop and could care less about problems going on there)

It is what it is -

Stop.

Just stop with your bullshit.

This is you right now:

they are not really looking for an answer to the question they are looking at how you react to curve balls if you will
and if you are nervous with your response like most people at a interview what then? Are they going to ignore all your qualifications?

You need to "get comfortable being uncomfortable"... Obviously when you are at the interview they can see you're not white... It's a cop out to give the whole "if my talent and qualifications" speech, because there is ALWAYS someone more talented and qualified... If you want to remove the HUMAN element, go start your own company...

The idea is to be 'well read', know your interviewers, know your company, know your location, know a current employee or an alumni--do your research. COMMUNICATION SKILLS and CULTURE FIT are the top things that employers look for. Actual skills is a baseline for the job...

At a certain point in your career you interviews and professional growth will become mostly 'culture fit'...

If you know your audience, you can show that you're a 'good fit'... If they're serious, get serious... If they all rowed crew in college--know SOMETHING about crew... In general, know SOMETHING about golf... Follow current events even if your job is to make widgets in some corner of the factory somewhere...

Stop speaking on things you don't know and then get all righteous on speculation.

If you knew Hr you would understand what organizational culture is.

You would also see that they are misappropriating the use of the term to justify bias.

Don't argue with me unless you come with facts.

Stay in your lane.
