Spike Lee Talks "Django Unchained"

Let's be real here.

Taratino is a "culture vulture". And he's one of these Hip WHITE people that has used aspects of Black culture to make it hip and palatable to Whites. He has many Whites thinking and feeling that being Black is anything other than a "street", (sometimes) negative experience.

Taratino in essence is the latest White guy to use vast history of creativity with words, language, music, etc. to Pop culture effect.

Appropriating a peoples' creativity is one thing. That's gone on like forever.

But to use a painful part of our history to POp culture effect is another story. It's disenguous and a bit disgusting.

So-Called "Blax-plotation" flicks happened because in those days, Black actors/actresses really didn't have much of a chance or choice. After "COTTON COMES TO HARLEM", "SHAFT", (little seen)"PUTNEY SWOPE", and "SUPERFLY", Hollywood essentially saw a gold mine. But still relegated Blacks to those films instead of giving them roles in mainstream films.

It's not the WHITE director I have an issue with doing this type of story. It's the WHITE Director's intentions. And Taratino's intentions for sure don't include making the general populace understand the history of America's enslavement of Blacks. It's more for entertainment, Pop Culture, and laughs.

Look at his interviews regarding "DJANGO UNCHAINED".
Tell me I'm wrong.

I'm a film freak. Especially on the technological end. But I'm truly in a personal debate about seeing this film. I want to see it. But I'm really tired of Black Culture being used for laughs.

But this weighs on US too. With our current state of Black Culture, We've given guys like Taratino carte blanche to do shit like this.

That's because a lot of US still don't know shit about our history here in America. And tend to treat our experiences (past, present, and possibly future) as a joke.

When slavery no longer offends us we are lost. When we can't empathize with the pain of our ancestors we have lost all knowledge of self. I think the generation that grew up post affirmative action, post black history in schools really has no idea about the struggle our people have gone through in America.

We keep getting sucked up in this pop culture as it bastardizes our history. And we laugh and clap at the bojango's

Another thought. How come Spike never goes hard against Sam Jackson? Sam stars in most of QT's movies and he's usually the one saying the lines with n**** in them.

Peace,

..You're defending a movie you haven't even seen, but then criticizing people for criticizing a movie they haven't seen? See that's the type of retard shit I talk about.

This is what's so interesting about the entire thread. You've got cats in here who soldiering hard for Tarantino and "Django Unchained," and they haven't seen the film. Yet one of their primary arguments is that people who are uncomfortable with the PREMISE of the film (and with Tarantino's creepy obsessiveness with black culture and the N-word) haven't seen the film.

Why isn't Spike and the other e-militants- going in on Jamie, Sam, and Kerry for there parts in this disrespectful film? Shouldn't the get a double dose since they the "niggas doing the nigga shit"?

* WAITS FOR THE CAPITALIST "THEY JUST HUSTLING FOR THAT PAPER/ GET IT HOW YOU CAN" DEFENSE USE FOR RAPPERS/POLITICIANS/CELEBS/ATHLETES AND ANYONE ELSE WHO IS LIKED BUT IS DOING SOME SIDEWAYS SHIT*:hmm:

Yall going boycott them niggas too? Hell they part of it?????

Once again when y'all organize the reckoning send me a

from a review:

Tarantino is taking the audience on a journey, too. A lot of people will be shocked by Django’s bleak images — scenes of slaves facing castration, being torn to pieces by dogs, being forced to fight each other or simply being offered as sexual playthings — but Tarantino says they’re based on historical fact. That’s how racist America was, immediately prior to the Civil War and before Lincoln abolished slavery.

http://www.thestar.com/entertainmen...renewed-filmmaking-fire-with-django-unchained

again..something like that you did not see in his big WW2 The Jews Strike Back epic Inglorious Basterds..

THAT is the point I'm making. Jews wouldn't not only tolerate using the holocaust as a backdrop for an action film it wouldn't even occur to most people to do something like that. It either didn't occur to tarantino or he consciously avoided staging his war film in an Auschwitz setting.

In the beginning I was kinda hyped to see django unchained but my position now is evolving and I can see how people can take offense to it on principle. The native american community wouldn't appreciate an action movie that used The Trail Of Tears as a backdrop.

Somethings should be seen for what they were and not used for escapist entertainment purposes...thats why Schindler's List was done almost documentary style and not as a thriller/drama. And when people talk about the holocaust in entertainment media its in hushed respectful tones.

Now QT THINKS he's being respectful by portraying the brutality of slavery in america but his concept of doing a western but with slavery in the background as a motivating force for the characters is out of pocket at best regardless of good intentions.

I mean if we're going to use horrible epsodes of human history as settings for fictional action stories then lets do them all..if django unchained can be made and win major awards then when is the big holocaust action film going to be made?

How about 911 with a recreation of the towers being hit and coming down..while we're at it I'm sure theres a great thriller story that can use the Newtown Massacre as its setting..26 kids still get killed but this time the principal of the school gets into an exciting john woo style shootout with adam lanza and they both kill each other.

Now if you think ANY of those ideas are offensive but stlll think django unchained is just a movie then sherlock holmes couldn't give you a clue:smh:

What I've never understood is Spike actually cast him in one of his films and whenever the media tried to call QT the godfather of modern independent film he would always big up Spike and say he was.

Also I feel like I cant DISAGREE with Spike its his opinion/view.

I havent seen the film either.

but damn...THIS is the film you want to make that stand on, really?

So this film is the WORST film ever and offends not only him but his ancestors?

NO OTHER FILM IN THE PAST 30 years has EVER come close to doing that?

Which has always lead me to believe that his beef with QT goes deeper than the "He put the word N***er a lot in his movies" issue. Tarantino had already put out both Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction by the time Lee cast him in Girl 6.

That is why I am always a little hesitant to take what he says at face value.
It was actually AFTER the N-word beef that Spike put him in the movie.

so whats spike motivation?

QT also criticized the industry for mot letting Soike do Inside Man 2.

Another thought. How come Spike never goes hard against Sam Jackson? Sam stars in most of QT's movies and he's usually the one saying the lines with n**** in them.

Cause holding EACH OTHER RESPONSIBLE is never the way, black folks want all the accolades for everything in the known universe but ain't trying to hear no criticism about shit without pointing at some other "people".

You don't blame Tarantino, he going to do what the fuck he going to do, if Spike has issue he should voice his issues with his fellow black "peers" of a short at least behind closed doors at the very least. And maybe publicly because again we have to check each other...

And like I said, pushing that Brooklyn Vodka with billboards ONLY Bed Stuy and the hood was absolute whack-sauce on his part.

This a damn movie he has issues with, he had no problem promoting white man poison in the black community, and the party he had for it's release down in Dumbo (Which I was present for cause my dude Spinna was playing was real fugazy,.......on some Emperor shit..........Just Saying.

Hold oneself accountable for you try to address others.

I tried to say that was a small part of the reason why spike has so much distaste and it was shot down. Spike lee gave Sam 4 of his first prominent roles of his career and helped him get his foot in the door, and QT blew him up with pulp fiction and has been loyal to QT ever since and never once again appeared in another spike lee movie. He has become Qt's most called upon actor, he even found a role for him in Inglorious Basterds. I know that has spike feeling some kind of way.

They performed together at the BET Awards this year and Sam always gives Spike props.

They are supposed to working on a project together soon.

But it is interesting how many studios dont want Sam doing anything besides THEIR project yet QT can always get him in one of his films.

We rarely get shit made because we aren't in gate keeper positions to make that happen. Despite the fact that Spike can be an asshole Inside Man still made money and yet the studio refuses to let him make a sequel. And thats just a heist film. Imagine what they would say about a true slave revolt film.

the thing for me personally is its not the fact that its said or how man times its the fact that when it comes to other race/ethnic groups you don't hear their slurs used as liberally even fictitiously.

the thing you fail to realize is that a lot of the time scripts aren't strictly adhered to. Also in the wiki of the film Kerry Washington's character is spelled brunhilda which is right depends on the final cut and credits.

Their slurs aren't as prominent as the word ******.. That's what you're not understanding.

And it's Broom-Hilda bruh.. This is based on how it's written in the script. I'll believe that before I believe some random Wiki..

Now you know DAMN WELL that instead of sitting on this you should have put that from the very jump, I can see the ADVANTAGE of you not doing so to let these reactionary knee jerk folks get themselves tied in a knot.

But really, you KNOW you should have put this from jump so it could have remote chance to be a sensible conversation...I see what you did there.

Because Sam Jackson would tell him to go fuck himself. Some people you just don't fuck with.

Yea, but no one asked as many times as I've made it known I had it either. They were content with making up what the movie was in their own mind, and trying to speak on some shit they had no idea about.. Not my first time posting it tho.. Posted it back in August in another thread, and again last week.

But he compared Inglorious Basterds to it.

Geech has given more spoilers than he has.

Allen West wouldn't be offended by it either.

You are smart enough to know that it is a fictionalized movie, right

What the movie is about and the times it was based on :smh:

Some of you don't have an ounce of pride, that's why I wonder if half of you are black

I like these words for being so direct and plain spoken.

So many folks lust for scenes of black folks being brutalized and subjugated.

This is the most recurring theme in everything black.

Whenever someone threatened the manufacture of this bullshit there is an immediate and dramatic opposition.

Fuck Taratino and Lee. This ain't about this.

This is about a lust for racially based violence and brutality.

Watching Roots right now. How many times y'all think they said niqqer in this film? I can't wait to go see Django fuck some cac's.up.

Will let all you boys who are so adept at judging without the knowing the facts first how it was.
