Spike Lee Talks "Django Unchained"

Thank God this is just a porn board. It'd be devastating to know that the attitude of most Afrikan people reflects those of people that post here.

C/S...

And yeah, lets also not forget that most of the folks here are racist/white supremacist suspects (white folks)

Naziploitation films were low budget grindhouse flicks from the poor taste era of the 70s and early 80s..there were number of plantation slave films done then as well...But tell me what A-list director and major film studio like Tarantino and Miramax did something like that then or in the last 30 years? The later examples you mentioned The Pianist, Defiance, The Holocaust, The Round up were all heavy dramas that took their subject matter very seriously they didn't mix genre elements such as action and comedy in with it. And if Jewish people had issues with Schindler's List then you tell me what theyre reaction would have been to a Django Unchained treatment of the Holocaust today? I would actually like an answer to that because I've asked it before and people keep avoiding answering. DO YOU THINK THE JEWISH COMMUNITY WOULD BE OKAY WITH A DJANGO UNCHAINED LIKE TREATMENT OF THE HOLOCAUST? DO YOU THINK THEY WOULD APPRECIATE IT IF A FILMMAKER WENT TO AN ACTUAL CONCENTRATION CAMP SITE AND FILMED SCENES?

And Native americans aren't happy about that shit either. They just don't have a big enough lobby and juice to do anything about it.

There isn't any limit on subject matter but that doesn't mean there wouldn't be any backlash. And how do you portray historical subject matter with dignity if the overall story is something of an action comedy?

Those examples I mentioned...How about 911 with a recreation of the towers being hit and coming down..while we're at it I'm sure theres a great thriller story that can use the Newtown Massacre as its setting..26 kids still get killed but this time the principal of the school gets into an exciting john woo style shootout with adam lanza and they both kill each other. Do you think theyre good subjects to use for fantasy fiction action films? Do you think they would be well received by the public at large if they were done some time in the future?

To say Django Unchained can't be compared to Inglourious Basterds because Inglourious Basterds didn't take place in a concentration camp doesn't mean it didn't deal with sensitive subject matter to Jewish people. That wasn't the only atrocity of Jews had to deal with during WWII. Jews were hunted down and killed like dogs. Further, there was criticism from Jewish people when news of Inglourious Basterds was to be made, that changed after they viewed the film. Even still some hate it some like it. They didn't like it but didn't stop it from being made. No film comes without it's criticism. Furthermore, you haven't seen Django Unchained so how can you compare or reconcile your outrage?

Art is subjective and will always be judged by the eye of the beholder. I understand the subject matter is touchy for people who minds aren't ready to shift. No subject matter is off limits to Hollywood eventually movies will be made of many tragedies including the Newton Massacre. I've seen a number of school shooting movies after Columbine massacre, I seen many titles based on 911 and it wasn't even ten years after that happen. Those are good subjects to use for a film because they are close to people's sentiments and will definitely resonate. Provocative subject matter always garners attention. Anybody can make any movie they want with whatever subject matter they choose. No one expects everyone to respond positively to every movie made dealing with sensitive subjects, what people respond positively or negatively to is a toss-up.

Everyone knows Tarantino to be a controversial filmmaker and the media knows how to get people riled up. So it's no surprise all manner of people are upset without having seen the film.

Why don't you see the film first. Then you can accurately judge how the subject matter was dealt with. Otherwise the discussion about this movie will go nowhere.

man Spike Lee aside, it looks like a trainwreck;

coonery, racial slang title (may as well call it Sambo), blaxploitation for the new millenium (a black slave that gets freed by a white to go hunt other whites)- he's going to look for his wife...

funny bc this type of thing would've never happened, his wife would've been raped, breeded, he woulda been put to work and not a single fuck would've been given. & Broomhilda, wtf? may as well call her Boomsheeka... :smh:

Being that it's QT, i guess i'll wait to see the BGOL bredren's reviews however.... doesn't look promising tho :smh:

I respect QT as a director, puts together crazy action movies; great one-liners, shock value, gorey graphics. Idk about social awareness, and historical accuracy, I think he's treading too deep.... :smh:

Spike needs to see the damn movie first before making asinine comments. Him not seeing the movie cuz of his ancestors is a bunch of bullshit.

I swear negroes love to pick and choose when they feel like being pro black.

man I can't believe sometimes how people don't ride for Spike, considering how much he has done for Black cinema...

in saying that I don't plan on seeing the movie either...simply because I look at it like this, why do I need to see a movie in the early eras of America 1800 that is ONLY slavery based, couple with the bullshit Lincoln biopic.

why can't I see a movie about the Haitian independence, Yanga or Victor Guererro in Mexico, what about a story about the building of Washington DC , and interpretation of the Ethiopian wars, Mansa Musa's travels to Mecca...shit something more than Django the "D" is silent, as if he is some cool as shaft pre 1970's or some shit

our children, and the way this thread is going MOST OF OUR ADULTS need something historically inspiring, and seeing a women beaten to the ground, men whipped in 2012..just isn't somting im paying $10 for

we get to see multiple ancient european remakes, love stories, alexander, rome etc...give me more than another slave flick, especially made by Tarantino

This movie was awesome.

Spike has not seen the movie so he is just talking bullshit. Fucking Hater...you get no pass because your black.

Movie was great

I know Im late to this party, but I cosign Mello Mello. I'll be checking this flick out asap. I've seen enough "woe is me" slave movies….why not a different approach?

Also Rick, no disrespect, (And I'm surprised no one brought this up before now) but WWII wasn't about stopping the Holocaust. Also Inglorious Basterds is not what I would call a Holocaust movie. It was a movie about the war with Holocaust overtones. WWII was about stopping Hitler's occupation of much of Europe around the time and the US aint even get involved right away.

All that being said, I actually agree with all your other points made here. Some cats just want the melodrama of slavery presented. I'm not with that. I find those movies depressing, Although definitely needed, I have no problem with a revisionist angle. We know what to expect with QT.

As far as the N word is concerned, I'll watch the movie to decide myself. It's a slave film. And while I DO agree that IB used no ridiculous amount of slurs to describe the Jews in a movie set in Holocaust times, (which would have been realistic) like they do when it comes to us, I'll watch the flick before I lose it over that news to hear the exactly WHO is saying the N word and the context. As for Spike, I rock with him on his opinions on Tyler Perry, who in my opinion does MORE damage, but this shit right here sounds personal.

Any writer, producer,or director who has used or will use slavery as part or as a whole in his or her work
is going to court and gain controversy. Slavery was/is sadistic, brutal, horrible and beyond degrading.
In Django Unchained Director/writer Quentin Tarantino crafts a story around the subject of slavery
that is part western, love story and revenge flick.

"Liberated " from slavery by bounty hunter/dentist Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz),Django (Jamie Foxx)
is asked to track down 3 men Schultz is seeking and can be only identified by Django and to join him for a season
of bounty hunting after which the 2 will rescue Django's beloved wife Broomhilda (Kerry Washington) from the clutches of
Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio), a plantation owner.

Some without seeing one frame of the film have rushed to judge it as a satire of slavery. Now there is without a doubt humor
throughout the film, but in no way is it some slapstick comedy about slavery Tarantino actually points out
the stupidity of bigotry in a few key scenes(the "bag head" scene is a standout and will be talked about for years)
Fortunately Tarantino put together and amazing cast.Foxx is great as Django ,he embodies the cowboys with no name ,
natural gunman, possesing the slow burn, reflecting on his wife which keeps his temper at bay though the brutality around him pushes
him to the limit. Waltz is brilliant as Schultz who detests slavery and the brutality that goes along with it.
Dicaprio almost completely vanishes into the character Candie,he is unflinchingly sinister,as a man who fancies
himself a gentleman, but is truly a sadistic, brutal, bigot.I truly admire Kerry Washington as Broomhilda and her bravery for taking on the role.
Last but not least there is Samuel L. Jackson as Stephen, Candies
house slave under heavy make up he is one of the most intimidating and sinister characters i have ever seen on the big screen.

There are also brief but memorable turns by Walton Goggins ,Don Johnson ,James Russo,James Remar ,Tom Wopat ,Misty Upham
Bruce Dern,,Jonah Hill, and Dana Michelle Gourrier

By the time DU enters its last act it starts to drag a bit and some of the violence is over the top ,and the use of the N word in the film is a bit excessive, but
i cant write off this very good film because of it.
If your a Tarantino fan its a must see,but i think even the casual fan will enjoy this
Scale of 1-10 a 9
