Here’s how a trade or an extension would impact Dwight Howard’s salary

Dan Fegan, Dwight Howard, Larry Coon, Orlando Magic — posted by Josh Robbins on July, 20 2012 3:08 PM

There’s a lot of confusion about how a trade would impact Dwight Howard’s future salaries.

To clear everything up, I’ve asked for — and received — the help of esteemed salary-cap expert Larry Coon, the author of the NBA Salary Cap FAQ.

Larry double-checked all of these numbers, so let this be your guide to understanding Howard’s situation.

Let’s begin by stating the following:

• Howard’s salary for the 2012-13 season will be $19,356,360. (Some salary databases list different numbers, but even if this figure is slightly off, it’s not off by much. And this salary is used as the jumping-off point for all the scenarios below.)
• Howard is scheduled to become a free agent after the 2012-13 season.

If Howard becomes a free agent in July 2013 and then signs with the team that has him at the end of the 2012-13 season:
The only way Howard can receive a new five-year contract is if he signs a free-agent deal with the team that has him at the end of the 2012-13 season.

In this scenario, he can receive annual raises of up to 7.5 percent of the salary in the first year of his new deal.

Howard’s maximum 2013-14 salary: $20,324,178
Howard’s maximum 2014-15 salary: $21,848,491
Howard’s maximum 2015-16 salary: $23,372,805
Howard’s maximum 2016-17 salary: $24,897,118
Howard’s maximum 2017-18 salary: $26,421,431
Total over those five seasons: $116,864,024

Analysis: Financially, this would be the best deal for Howard because of the extra season and the 7.5 percent annual raises. A fifth year also might seem more attractive than ever to Howard after he suffered his back injury last season.

That said, a five-year deal has two disadvantages.

First, because he would be locked into that fifth season, he would be able to exert less leverage over his team to make the moves he wants the team to make. All other things equal, a team that knows he can leave after four seasons instead of five likely would be more attentive to his wishes.

Second, if Howard becomes disenchanted after three or four years, he’d be contractually prevented from walking away until July 2018. (Of course, Howard and his agent, Dan Fegan, simply can avoid that problem by insisting on an early-termination clause in his new deal.)

If Howard becomes a free agent in July 2013 and then signs with a new team:
In this scenario, at most, Howard only could sign a four-year deal with maximum annual raises of 4.5 percent.

His maximum 2013-14 salary: $20,324,178
His maximum 2014-15 salary: $21,238,766
His maximum 2015-16 salary: $22,153,354
His maximum 2016-17 salary: $23,067,942
Total over those four seasons: $86,784,240

Analysis: Howard obviously would not be guaranteed as much money in a four-year deal than in a five-year deal. And he obviously would prefer 7.5 percent annual raises over 4.5 percent annual raises.

Still, the disadvantages of a four-year deal can be overstated. After he completes a four-year deal, a player of Howard’s caliber should have no problem finding another team to sign him to a new maximum deal. So, comparing a four-year, $86.8 million deal to a five-year, $116.8 million deal is not comparing apples to apples.

That said, Howard might welcome the security of a five-year deal after his recent back injury.

If Howard extends his current contract with a team during the 2012-13 season:
In this scenario, under NBA rules, Howard only would be allowed to add three additional seasons to his current contract.

Those additional seasons would be the 2013-14, 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons. But he could receive up to 7.5 percent annual raises.

There is one essential caveat: If Howard is traded, he and his new team, under NBA rules, would have to wait six months from the date of his trade before he could extend his current contract by three seasons and with 7.5 percent annual raises.

His maximum 2013-14 salary: $20,324,178
His maximum 2014-15 salary: $21,848,491
His maximum 2015-16 salary: $23,372,805
Total over those 3 seasons: $65,545,474

* Keep in mind, however, that Howard still would earn $19,356,360 for this upcoming season. So, in this scenario, from now through the 2015-16 season, he would receive a total of $84,901,834 in salary.

Analysis: Extending his current deal would be more attractive to his team than to Howard himself. A contract extension would give his team peace of mind that it can’t lose him in free agency in July 2013.

But, at the same time, Howard would receive one fewer new year than if he signs a free-agent deal with a new team and two fewer new years than if he signs a free-agent contract with the team that had him at the end of the 2012-13 season.

Plus, here’s an even more obvious point: Extending his current deal would strip Howard of freedom of choice in free agency.

No wonder Fegan is making it clear that Howard has no intention of extending his current deal. It makes more sense, from Howard’s perspective, to become a free agent.

If the Magic and another team execute an extend-and-trade deal:
In this scenario, Howard and his new franchise, at most, only could add two more seasons: the 2013-14 season and the 2014-15 season. Also, he would receive, at most, 4.5 percent annual raises.

His maximum 2013-14 salary: $20,324,178
His maximum 2014-15 salary: $21,238,766
Total over those two seasons: $41,562,944

* Keep in mind, however, that Howard still would earn $19,356,360 for this upcoming season. So, in this scenario, from now through the 2014-15 season, he would receive a total of $60,919,304 in salary.

Analysis: This scenario doesn’t help Howard financially and would limit his freedom of choice.

If anything, it would only give his new team peace of mind that it wouldn’t have to battle to keep him in free agency in July 2013.

Karl Expresses Concern About Crowded Frontcourt
Jul 20, 2012 10:55 AM EDT

The Nuggets have several frontcourt players who are accustomed to playing significant minutes, including JaVale McGee, Kenneth Faried, Al Harrington, Kosta Koufos, and Timofey Mozgov. So divvying out minutes will be a challenge.

"There's no question, it's too many,” George Karl said. “It's a situation that if everybody is healthy, it's going to be a tough thing. There's no question that 1-2 players, might even be three, might not be happy with the minutes they get. But I always tell people that it's a much better situation than the opposite one. Having good players usually figures its way out — sometimes that's by trade, sometimes it just works out."

Denver recently signed free agent forward Anthony Randolph to a three-year, $6 million deal.

"Randolph is another good pickup — I think everybody sees a great athlete,” Karl said. “I think he's a frustrated player from the 3-4 years he's been on losing teams, unsuccessful teams. We're looking forward to working with him. Our roster is very young, but in the same sense, it's very dangerous."

16 players on the roster with 6 guards.

Final Roster would look something like this:(Miller would most likely be a 3.

PG:Lawson/A. Miller
SG:AAA/Brewer/Fournier
SF:Gallo/Chandler/Hamiltion
PF:Faried/Harrington/Randolph/Q. Miller(D-league)
C:McGee/Koufos/Mozgov

Cut Mozzy. He's big but he's not ready and he's always hurt it seems.

They could have one of the best regular season teams this year but a lot of these guys disappear in the playoffs.:smh:

I don't understand why Randolph decided to sign with the Nuggets instead of the Hawks.

:smh::smh::smh:

First off... Melo made reference to the STRUCTURE OF THE CONTRACT...
NOT THE DOLLAR AMOUNT... and yes... The contract was ridiculous...

JR's comments.... I don't know... I don't even know what he supposedly said or if he even said anything... :dunno:

As to Melo hating on J.Lin... :hmm:.... I REPEAT... :hmm:

I HAVE NEVER SEEN 'MELO HATING ON J.LIN... WHATSOEVER... :smh:
I have 'Melo dap J.Lin in PLENTY OF GAMES... He's made comments of SUPPORT of J.Lin since DAY ONE... but ... as usual... The PAPERS CREATE THE FALSE DESCENSION BETWEEN J.LIN AND 'MELO... :smh:

The NYC media do it... ALL THE TIME...
They tried to do it with Allan Houston and Sprewell... Mark Jackson and Rod Strickland... Eddy Curry and Zach Randolph... even now they're trying to do it with Amar'e and 'Melo... EVEN THOUGH... BOTH GUYS EXPRESSED THE DESIRE TO PLAY TOGETHER... :smh:

Now I do agree that 'Melo shouldn't have said anything... BUT... I agree for different reasons...

He shouldn't have said anything because his comments got twisted into something else... And that's what happened... People take it as hate instead of taking those comments for what he was REALLY speaking to... and that's THE THIRD YEAR OF THE CONTRACT... BUT... IN NO WAY WILL I EVER CONSIDER 'MELO A HATER... :smh:

Especially when he was a guy who supported him... ALL SEASON LONG...

Yes Dolan sucks as an owner I just said that....

Right now the Knicks have a squad with the potential for a high seed. The got a 7 seed last ear without a PG for 3/4 of the season. Now they have 2 and Felton for all the shit he is getting was 17/9 the last time he played in NY. The Knicks don't suck so stop talking shit like there still the 2005 Knicks.

Why would he comment on Eddy Curry??? or Zach??? :dunno:
And why is it that ONLY A PART OF HIS COMMENTS ARE BEING EMPHASIZED???
Why not the whole thing??? Like the part where he says he's HAPPY that Lin is getting paid... He just felt that the structure of the contract was ridiculous... A structure that made it DIFFICULT FOR THE KNICKS TO RETAIN HIM...
Like I said, I agree shouldn't have said anything BUT that's because his words are getting twisted into some bullshit... just for the sake of selling papers...

Now, I know you don't like the Knicks but BDR... DON'T FALL FOR THE OKEY-DOKE... :smh: Because it's already been reported what 'Melo meant by ridiculous...

Brandon Rush's market value seems to be getting clearer. And from the looks of it, his salary would be very matchable for the Warriors. Shannon Brown, O.J. Mayo, Courtney Lee all got deals starting in the $3 to $4 million range. So a 3-year deal for Rush figures to fall between $9 and $12 million. But GSW might prefer a 2-year deal to preserve their anticipated salary cap space in 2014. To achieve that, they may throw in a little extra for Rush. A 2-year deal for somewhere between $8 to $10 million could be solid middle ground for both sides. (To be sure, a three year deal for Rush won't do much harm to 2014 cap space.)

Gentry Views Beasley As Offensive Orchestrator
Jul 20, 2012 11:18 PM EDT

Alvin Gentry believes Michael Beasley can orchestrate the Suns’ offense.

"I think he can be a go-to facilitator," Gentry said. "We need that guy you can throw the ball to -- not necessarily to score the points but to create situations that lead to points.

"We'll have him handle the ball some in screen-roll situations. We're excited about some of the versatility he brings our team."

Beasley, 23, addressed his troubled past, including his history with controlled substances.

"Everybody has a lot of ups and downs," he said. "I've had a lot of downs. Sometimes to keep from crying, you have to laugh.

"I realize 10 minutes of feeling good is not worth putting my life, my career, my legacy in jeopardy.”

Advertisements To Appear On Game Uniforms In 13-14
Jul 21, 2012 10:12 AM EDT

The NBA Board of Governors approved the inclusion of advertisements on game uniforms for the 13-14 season.

Small advertising could generate $100 million in new revenue.

"The view is, that the teams would need a significant time; one, to sell the patch; and number two, for Adidas to manufacture the uniforms, because the patch that would be on the players' uniforms would also appear on the jerseys at retail," said Deputy Commissioner Adam Silver.

Professional soccer teams have long had advertisements on uniforms and the NBA is using their numbers as projections for revenues.

Warriors Interested In Andrei Kirilenko

The Warriors are interested in signing Andrei Kirilenko, according to sources.

But Kirilenko is likely to remain in Russia to continue playing for CSKA.

Kirilenko's return to the NBA had been linked to the Nets, but they can only offer approximately $1.2 million. Golden State can pay double that in the first season

Gasol was acquired by the Lakers in 2008.

Aldridge Thought Hibbert Would Take Blazers To Next Level
Jul 21, 2012 10:22 AM EDT

LaMarcus Aldridge was disappointed that the Blazers were unable to acquire Roy Hibbert in free agency.

Portland agreed to sign Hibbert to a contract, but it was rescinded after it was clear the Pacers would match.

Aldridge and Hibbert exchanged phone calls and regular text messages during the NBA free agency moratorium.

"I definitely felt like he would have put us over that hump of being on the next level," Aldridge said. "Having him beside me; that's big time. So I was disappointed."

Knicks Express Interest In Sonny Weems, Maurice Evans
Jul 20, 2012 11:20 PM EDT

The Knicks have "shown some interest" in Sonny Weems and Maurice Evans, according to their agent Roger Montgomery, who also represents Jeremy Lin.

"I think both of them would fit really good in that situation," Montgomery said. "Mo would fit for a number of reasons because what he does as a veteran, and he's played for Woody. And I think Sonny would be an absolute steal if he was able to go play with them, just because of how athletic he is. I think that he could be a starter and he could be a rotation guy. I think he would be ideal."

Weems, 26, averaged 11.8 points for Zalgiris last season.

Evans, who played for the Wizards last season, fits the Knicks’ spending limit of $1.4 million, the so-called veteran's minimum contract.
