Prometheus.........

Re: Prometheus fucking sucked

If you just watch movies and just watch them, then yeah, it's probably not a good movie.

If you think actively while watching, then it's pretty damn good.
naa actively thinking while watching it is what actually ruined the movie

I liked contact with Jodie foster too. Its in my top five. I'm sure most of u hated that movie.

Differences in perception. :dunno:

nope, I loved contact, was mostly indifferent to prometheus.

what evidence in the movie shows/hints at what made the engineer want to to attack as soon as it woke up?

why doesn't anyone comment on shaw being bloody and knocking out two crew members?

why does shaw forget to tell everyone else that she just removed a monster from inside her?

why does weyland keep his presence aboard the ship a secret?

why are these "scientists" so quick to accept the notion that the engineers' dna matches humans without seriously pondering what the ramifications are about the theory of evolution (yes the biologist glossed over that point, but after he dies, nobody else seems to care).

etc...

Re: Prometheus fucking sucked

When a movie sucks, people dont talk about it for 6 pages:rolleyes:

only if they were disappointed after the massive hype:rolleyes:.

this is the reverse argument of an album being awesome, cuz it went multi-platinum.

Re: Prometheus fucking sucked

No hype ruining for me... I've come to realize that majority of Americans or people in general don't like to think during movies. So when most people say that "it sucked"... or "didn't make sense"... Then I know its a movie that will make you think. I'm still amp'd to see that shit!:cool::dance:
Sometimes but not always. Sometimes movies are just full of bullshit and people make excuses for it.
Take Sucker Punch, for instance.
In early interviews, the director all but flat out admitted that he made action sequences and then wrote around them.
He took a vague approach to writing the film and let people fill in the blanks.
Fans of the movie made it out to be so much or than it really was because it was vague.
In truth, it wasn't nearly as deep as people made it out to be. In later interviews, it was obvious that he incorporated the fans' ideas into his explanation of the movie. Total Hollywood bullshit. I'm not saying that is the case here; I'm just saying that it happens and filmmakers will roll with whatever it takes to sell the movie.

All of this is answered or alluded to in the movie. Minus the dna. Poetic license.

Sucker punch was bad. But there was a stroke of genius there. That could have been an awesome movie with some minor tweaks.

Prometheus:
End credits reveal yet another viral video, and allusions to Nietzsche

If you left Prometheus thinking, “Well, that was certainly intense, but what it was missing was more baffling philosophical exploration into Freidrich Nietzsche’s concept of the Übermensch,” you’re in luck! (Note: SPOILERS follow.)

Eagle-eyed and endlessly patient moviegoers noticed that at the very end of the end credits for Prometheus, a logo for the fictional Weyland Corporation rolled onto the screen, with the tagline “Building Better Worlds Since 10. 11. 12″ and an address for the “corporate timeline” for Weyland Industries. That timeline does indeed note that the company was founded on October 11, 2012, but it’s been available online for a while now. It turns out this end credits bumper was really pointing to a brand new easter egg: Whatis101112.com, a curious website that basically serves as an oblique advertisement for the seminal work of German philosopher Freidrich Nietzsche, Thus Spoke Zarathustra: A Book for All and None.

At this point, the site includes a fancy 3-D rendering of the book, a cursory synopsis of the tome — “Much of the work deals with ideas such as the ‘eternal recurrence of the same,’ the parable on the ‘death of God,’ and the ‘prophecy’ of the Übermensch” — and a video of actor Guy Pearce as company founder Dr. Peter Weyland. The 27-second clip appears to be shot just before Weyland delivers the “TED talk” that launched Prometheus‘ viral video ad campaign. But if you’re hoping the video will illuminate some of the film’s dangling imponderables, well, it doesn’t. But check it out anyway:

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/GDanyJA5aRU" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

In case you couldn’t make out what Weyland was saying, it’s
“I am a law only for my kind, I am no law for all,”
also a quote from Zarathustra. This all appears to have something to do with the giant albino “Engineers” at the heart of Prometheus‘ creationist mythology, and Weyland’s monomaniacal desire to meet them so he can learn how to live forever. The suggestion is that the Engineers, in Weyland’s mind, are the Nietzsche’s Übermensch, but the viral site also seems to indicate that four more high-minded literary allusions are yet to be featured on Whatis101112.com. After which, all questions will be answered, humanity’s true origins will be finally revealed, and we can all get back to contemplating how Ridley Scott cast the 44-year-old Pearce to play the elderly Weyland in his feature-length motion picture so the actor could appear as a young man in viral videos hidden on the Internet.

interesting...

Contact the movie was a significant departure from the book.

The movie was a major disappointment for me.

Re: Prometheus fucking sucked

I loved "Contact" with Jodie.

I also loved "Sunshine" before it went slasher film at the end.

"Event Horizon" was another good one I liked.

I wouldn't say I hate this one. It just seems sloppy...like the 80's era horror movies with people doing things no one realistically wouldn't. (Removing their helments, getting close to an alien, not realizing two people were left, no one being concerned about an alien being born onboard...etc).

Then it answers no questions and saves them for a sequel which could never come.

"Hands up!!" Worse last line ever.

THIS. THIS. THIS.

2001 A Space Odyssey is basically the dead sea scrolls of sci-fi film as far as I'm concerned. . .

I've read the ENTIRE series and I have to agree. Kubrick and Clarke broke the mould and died. Shame.

Colin wouldn't like it and I am not typing all that shit.

Seeing it twice makes a difference.

so it takes an essay to point out where the movie explains why nobody seems to notice a bloody shaw who knocked out two crew members? it takes an essay to point out where in the movie it tries to rationalize shaw taking no interest it informing anyone that she just gave birth to a monster?

Ridley called ... how could I say no?? He should have asked me for help with the story, but he has his pride.

Seems like a cop-out. No diss.

honestly, its not that important to me. i enjoyed the flick and it did not leave me wanting. if this thread didn't help one feel better about the experience i doubt anything i have to say will.

i enjoyed the movie. yall didn't. okay.

i think that this is one of those movies that will age better with time. 2001, Blade Runner and Star Trek did not have a good reception from the general audience at the time they were made. Now, they are all considered classics and defining content of the genre. I feel that way about Prometheus.

Honestly all in all I didn't really hate the movie (was mostly indifferent), I just found it to be a huge letdown compared to the hype and expectation for the past 2 years. That feeling of epicness and dred that was conveyed in the 3 min trailer was nowhere near duplicated in the actual film. Different opinions I know I know.

But thanks for confirming that you don't have any real answers for those logical inconsistencies tho.

It's an entertaining flick bottom line.

There were some parts that had me vexed. Like David's hard-headed self in the beginning.:smh: And those two that broke camp would have not have gotten such an easy pass. I was like 'hell naw.' They would've gotten the Ray Lewis special about teamwork and sticking together, at least. And that Scotland jab was confusing unless there's something I'm not aware of.

And that cat face broad grew on me. She's cool. No regrets, solid movie.

Hell...I still don't understand how Shaw's alien hybrid baby morphed into a totally different alien/engineer hybrid.

I don't get the science. I understood the greek myth angle. I'm skeptical on the Jesus was an alien agent angle.

Re: Prometheus fucking sucked

'prometheus' is only a mythological name (like nimrod) for the white man.

Re: Prometheus fucking sucked

 I almost said the same thing in the theater. I don't know what Ridley was thinking when they gave Guy Pearce that fucked up old man look. Why not just hire an older actor to play Weyland instead doing a horrible make-up job on Guy Pearce. Their are so many things wrong with this film that its almost makes my head spin. Shit makes you wonder is Ridley going senile?
This is just a product of the final film. The reason Guy Pearce was playing an old man was because the majority of his story was flashbacks to scenes with the younger Weyland. These were cut in the final product, so you got the worst of both worlds (unnecessarily having a old character done in bad make-up in place of a real older actor, and not fleshing out the character).

Hopefully there will be a Director's Cut when it hits home with the scenes restored.

1) You know how if someone wakes you up in the morning you might be cranky and in a bad mood, well just imagine being like that from 2,000 years of sleep! For real though, they wake up this Engineer and dude is still groggy from being sleep for 2 millenia and the first thing they want to do is ask questions and yell and hit each other in front of him? I'm sure he was like "Who the fuck are y'all"?!

I find it to be extremely stupid etiquette to greet an alien species for the first time, just coming out of disorientating cryosleep, with yelling and violence against one of your own. Not exactly the best way to sell one's species.

2) True, nothing was said

3) She thought it was dead after she "decontaminated" it, and actually I thought it was too.

4) True again. There was really no reason for him to hide his presence at first. His daughter knew he was there, and the company knew he was going, so why hide?

5) Yeah the scientists accepted it way too quickly/easy. Chimpanzee's share 99% match of DNA with humans, so you would think they would want to run more tests before just accepting this as the "be all" answer.

Finally, caught this joint on FAther's day. Then went home and watched the director's cut of ALien.

I don't know how you all can't say it's not a prequel for Alien franchise. It's in the same universe (planest designated LV-XXX), The Weyland corporation in the movie clearly evolved into Weyland-Rutan corp in Alien) and finally there's exposition at the end the shows exactly how the crash site in Alien could have happened.

THe whole engineer alien as creator of human race was not original (ST:TNG did it 15 years ago). But even with that they could have done a lot more with it.

Things that left me scratching my head.

1) How did the the geologist and bioligist get left behind. They broke out before anyone else and somehow got left behind? I just don't understand that.

2) Why does the black goo infect Holloway in some unknown way that doesn't kill him or cause an alien to grow in him, but then is somehow able to result in a Xenomorph baby in Shaw after 10 hours????? I mean that shit was quite a stretch even for a science fiction movie. I guess the message is mix any DNA with black goo and you get some random alien.

3) How does anyone come to the conclusion that the Aliens were on their way to destroy earth? Was there some message in the holograms that only the android could understand?

After I re-watched ALien (a much better movie btw) I realize they just recycled a lot of it in Prometheus and just slapped some Intelligent design mythology around it.

theyre called plotholes and theres no excuse for them... here's what I found when I watched it:

Just saw the film yesterday and here's why I think people were disappointed with it. The filmmakers took great care to make sure we knew the film wasn't a direct prequel to Alien and Aliens but there's enough reference to those films plus fan desire for it to be a prequel so the protest and corrections don't matter anyway. The biggest issue I had after seeing the movie wasn't so much with the themes, theology or metaphors the film gets into as much as the basic characterizations, dynamics and continuity of the story itself.

Things happen that either don't matter in the grand scheme of things or just plain don't make sense. Character motivations and actions must be consistent for the viewer to be able to put themselves in the film and feel the tension and drama. This was done most effectively in the Alien and Aliens. But it was really kinda lacking in Prometheus.

In Alien, we follow a crew of intergalactic contractors returning to Earth with a shipment of mineral ore when they encounter a distress signal. Acting on protocol from their employer Weyland-Yutani, they check out the signal and hilarity ensues. But what really makes the film work is the dynamic between the crew members. Everyone had a jaded, mercenary attitude and spoke to each other with the familiar shorthand and camaraderie of people who have worked together for a long time. We saw the same thing in the sequel Aliens, with the colonial marines investigating a lost contact signal from a colony on planet LV-426. These guys were nonchalant acting even when told they were about to encounter a "contagion" which they referred to as a bug hunt. So when the killing and running starts, we have some kind of connection to the crew because we can relate to them.

In Prometheus, we never get to know the crew because we spend so much time with android David, Meredith Vickers, a Weyland exec assigned to oversee the expedition and the two head scientists Elizabeth Shaw (in the Ripley position) and Charlie Holloway. Their relationship is contentious at best and we get beyond that. The other crew members pretty much get a lick and a promise as far as characterization goes.

But lets get to the points of contention that threw things off for me in the movie.

In no particular order...

The two scientist who break away from the group to "go back to the ship" only to be found in a different part of the complex.
Upon discovering dead bodies of the Space Jockey/Engineers all over an underground complex on the planet one of the scientists, Fifield, the geologist, basically freaks out (ala Pvt Hudson "Game Over, Man!) and says his expertise is in examining rocks not dead aliens and with Milburn, a biologist, in agreement (who curiously leaves even though studying organisms is right up his alley) both men decide to go back to the mothership. Okay that makes sense. Its a creepy place with dangerous looking shit all around and no one knows how all these aliens died so fuck it, I'm outta here. Great. Not too long after they leave the main group has to leave the complex anyway because a storm is coming and they'll be trapped in the complex if they don't leave right away. Upon getting back to the mothership, the captain says wheres Fifield and Milburn? Wait, they didn't get out even thought they had a head start before everyone else? They got lost even thought there are mapping bots actively charting the complex in real time and they're in constant contact with the mothership who can track their location? Hmmm..somethings not right about that. But more on that a little later.

No one pursues or seems surprised to find Shaw is covered in blood and had major surgery?
Shaw gets pregnant by her infected boyfriend Holloway. In typical Alien fashion the gestation period is rapid and soon she showing a potbelly much to her own surprise since she couldn't get pregnant in the first place. Its decided, against her will, that she will be placed in stasis for the duration of the pregnancy and the ride back to Earth. Shaw then fights off the medical crew members trying to put her to sleep and runs to a robotic medical station and has an emergency cesarean section performed on herself in a particularly graphic scene. Out comes a squid fetus and Shaw is stapled back together. She then staggers to another part of the ship where she finds oldman Weyland himself (long thought dead) coming out of stasis sleep and being tended to by the medical crew that tried to put her to sleep. Whats curious about this scene is at no point did anyone pursue Shaw as she broke free. No one came to the med lab she was in getting her C-section done. No one even bothers to question why she's drenched in blood. Neither Vickers nor the ship's captain Janek are even aware of what transpired and its not a huge ship nor very many people in it. This scene just does not work logically.

Vickers revelation about being Weyland's daughter goes nowhere so ultimately means nothing
After Weyland is awakened, he has a private conversation with his employee Meredith Vickers, During some intense back and forth its revealed that incredibly old man tagged along to find a way to live forever and is hoping the Engineers can help him. Vickers, none too happy that the old dude won't kick the bucket, derisively calls him "father". Well that explains the muted hurt look she had when Weyland happily called David the closest thing he had to a son. Proudly acknowledging parentage about an android but not his own flesh and blood. But what that little revelation doesn't do is go anywhere or amount to anything significant. When she spits the word father at him, it was during an extreme close up with tense music underneath. Surely this reveal presented in such a fashion would mean some sort of long overdue showdown between these two? Nope. Weyland is her pappy, then they both die. Oookay.

David's behavior and actions seem to have nothing to do with Weyland's agenda.
Unlike the other films in which we discover further into the story that there is an android operating among the crew, we are introduced to David very early on. We find him monitoring the crew who are in travel stasis and watching old movies. Also unlike the other films David acts like an artificial human where in Alien we didn't find out that Ash wasn't human until he head was bashed off. David acts suspiciously and sinister-like from the jump but the difference here is that the androids from the Alien films were acting on orders from Weyland Corp to bring back a specimen for their bio-weapons division. There is no bio-weapons division yet because there is no reason for the company to think that anything aggressive is going to happen if they meet anyone. Also we later find out that Weyland himself is on the ship and his agenda is to extend his lifespan. At one point David is in contact with someone from Weyland and tells Vickers the order is to "try harder". So in an effort to do that David infects Holloway with the black goo substance he obtained from the complex. This makes no sense since there is no way to know what the effect could be. Maybe Holloway transforms into a higher order being, maybe he dissolves into a puddle of goo, maybe the infection becomes airborne or easily communicable and kills everyone on the ship including Weyland himself. If David is acting on his own then he's doing something that no other android in the Alien universe ever did. Hopefully rather than a plot hole David's actions will be explain in the sequel.

The lost, scared scientists suddenly become nature lovers.
Back with Fifield and Milburn who are still lost and wandering the complex. At this point these two are something like comic relief. They're jumping at every noise like Abbott and Costello meets the Mummy. Okay, I'll buy (grudgingly) that these two are legitimately lost even though they can get into contact with Janek. There's the (weak) explanation about some sort of signal interference but they seem to be communicating fine while the storm is raging. Janek tells them that the mapping bots have picked up a lifeform reading somewhere in the complex to which Fifield (the rock guy) freaks the hell out at the news. Okay that makes sense. They continue to wander the complex and go into a chamber where the big head is located and see something moving in the pools of black goo on the floor. Do they run screaming out the room? Nope. Then suddenly a snake like creature rises out the goo. Do Fifield and Milburn turn tail and haul ass? Nope. Fifield, Mr. "I study rocks not dead bodies", the same guy who flipped at just hearing that something alive is down there with them, this same guy gets all fascinated and kneels down to get a closer look at the damn thing. That doesn't make sense. That behavior is in fact completely contrary to his behavior earlier. Especially when you consider the fact that most mammals are naturally afraid of snakes, especially humans, its wholly unbelievable that upon seeing a space snake rearing up in a room full dead bodies, Fifield's reaction would be "ohhh, its beautiful". That's not consistent at all with their earlier behavior.

All of this adds up to basic lazy writing and a big let down for a film that's been so heavily anticipated.

Man I just seen this shit...Niggaz...man yall arguin bout the wrong shit. THe most hilarious and best part of this shit to me is when they woke up the engineer outta hy per sleep. Worth the price of admission. Shit had me dying son.

To them we must be like monkeys. So imagine if you wake up outta hypersleep, ship fucked up, crew dead and you surrounded by monkeys. Now all the monkeys is yellin and shit haaaaaaaa hooooo hooooo, arrrgggggggg, but one monkey can speak english. So you touch the english speakin monkey and realize that mufucka ain't even real. Now you realize the monkeys made a fake monkey that knows how to talk to you.

FUckin engineer like what the fuck kinda nightmare I done woke up in???

Nigga just start swattin these mufuckas like the insignigficant flies they are. Gottdamn dumb ass cracka flew all them light years tryin to cheat death to get bitch slapped into the afterlife by his maker. He thought that shit was gonna be one way....

But yeah the plot was all ova the place. THe dumbest shit EVER tho was the nigga just decidin to go kamikaze at the end. And then the white bitch open the door to let the giant alien out to kill the engineer...she don't get a fuckin scratch...don't get me started on the "operation"...bitch yanked a fuckin alien out her stomach...no internal organs fucked up...nothin...bitch stayed awake the whole time...ehhhh

But that engineer fuckin them up was the best shit to me. Gottdamn cracka can make all the movies he want about winnin against these aliens but when that shit go down fa real it's gon be a different story.

And since they borrowed so much from Sumerian ancient creation texts, if they stayed on point then the heiroglyphs would be found in Africa and the engineers would be black.

Not to mention the fact that she goes on to perform the equivalent of a rugby match through the rest of the movie

Oookay.

You know I had forgot about that. I think having Vickers (and the rest of the crew) die, was there way of saying "SEE this isn't a pre-quel, because everyone died who might have told anyone what happened"

But Vikers didn't even get to die on screen, we just get her implied crushing due to her inability to run horizontal when big vertical ship is crashing down on you. :smh:

There were some problems with the story. Not gonna lie about that. Only the writers know why they decided to sleep in that room or stay in there after seeing some alien shit rise up. I dunno.

Overall - I wanna see a sequel strictly for the premise. I enjoy the alien world and want to learn about the engineers. Overall it was a pretty good movie. Half this shit - I just looked at my girl like fuck it, they are white.

But some of y'all are viewing this shit through 20/20 vision. With them viewing the DNA. They just got a $1 trillion voyage funded based on their theory. They are gonna use the first little inkling of evidence as confirmation for their theory - like the IRAQ war. Some scientist will say fuck it- they don't want to be proven wrong.
