Cena earns the bashing with his poor acting and his inability to figure out which emotion he should be portraying.
But, and I keep saying this because some people keep missing it, I heap even more blame on the Creative and Management because ultimately, they approve of what Cena is doing and direct him to be that way.
If anything this thread has been overwhelming about bashing bad booking, whether it's about Cena in particular or WWE and TNA in general.

I blame both because they're idiots for allowing/approving such mannerisms, and it's on him for not being smart enough to know how to sell a feud/promo. Cena is a classic example of someone who wanted to be a wrestler vs someone who was meant to be one.

But there have been a lot of guys who weren't naturals who had proper guidance and the booker protected them and made them look like stars (Lex Luger being the best example). I could almost guarantee if Ole Anderson or Ernie Ladd or Dusty were booking Cena, he would be a totally different animal and one of the most over faces ever and not know a single wrestling move more than he does now.

You have got to love the irony of someone calling me--me!-- a Rock "stan" (man, I hate that Eminem started that shit. It's almost as annoying as "What" chants) when I've banged on the Rock hard for over a year.

No offense dog but I call bullshit on y'all. Diego is right I think I was the first dude in this thread that's pro cena and very since the first time I made that clear y'all started coming at me because of it. Now I can take jokes its the internet so I definitely don't catch feelings but don't turn it around like dudes don't seem to carry some unbiased opinion of cena. You keep saying he can't act but he's always been the same since the PG era. He is a character that knows he can go with anybody. Now I agree his best booking was with the thuganomics gimmick but you can't tell me that that he can't sell because he was one of the best draws when he was on smackdown.

I agree that the PG era fucked his character up but like you said thats creative doing that not him. He's a good wrestler but because wwe is dumbed down for kids it's never gonna be that cena that could and should be one of the top faces ever in wwe.

I never said anyone had an unbiased opinion of Cena. Everyone has a bias, one way or another. I don't particularly care for him myself but since I was a kid I liked the rulebreakers and heels. Cena can be extremely corny and his lack of acting ability doesn't help him with older, hardcore fans who have just as much right to dislike him as you do to like him.
I just gave about as honest an appraisal of Cena as you're going to get and I've been pretty straightforward about him despite not liking him.
When he was on SD, they were just getting started with the "SuperCena" push and he's gone downhill since. If you remember, he was very popular on Smackdown but not as popular as Batista was on Raw but they saw longer range money in John and went with him (right decision considering Big Dave's age). Once he became "unbeatable", he lost a lot of fans.
His bad acting (and he's not alone on that or even the worst in WWE) is his fault, the bad booking is someone else's.
You can call that bullshit if you want, not my concern.

I always hated Luger even as a kid, he just seemed like JAG to me and i never bought into the "Lex Express":smh:

Stan is the equivalent of calling someone gay so when i read that i know they don't have an argument. I do believe that Rock needs to dial back the comedy and twitter stuff, which is why i think all of this might have been a setup to get us to the concert. I could be wrong but i do feel that something is going to go down Monday.

Man, Lex Luger was built up to be the biggest thing wrestling had ever seen. He was the fucking LeBron James of wrestling minus actual talent. But the presentation was perfect. Ric blew him up at every chance. They booked him only against guys he could look good with with no long tv matches but some really long arena matches so by the time he turned face and went after Flair, I just knew he was going to win.

Yeah, Rock did more to make me excited for this match when he stopped talking and glared at Cena after the wrist thing than anything he's said in a year.
I don't look forward to the "concert" but I hope something good happens.

The angle with NXT is the one angle that everybody in this thread has cited as them doing things right with a Cena angle. Problem was that they just a little bit instead of really making it seem like he was going to lose. The buildup at SummerSlam was good but then Cena defeats NXT by taking the top 2 guys in the faction out within 30 seconds of each other. They do the whole firing schtick complete with farewell speech for him to show up on the next show and beat the whole groups ass for weeks.
As for the Punk thing yes Punk killed him with the promos and then won the match after Cena releases the submission he has Punk in, goes outside the ring and then returns to the ring right into the GTS. Cena has been world champ 12 times and when was the last time he was beat clean for the belt without some shenanigans.
The Wrestlemania thing was ok in terms of Miz getting some heat. Problem was that Miz was treated like the 3rd wheel during the thing and the finish to the match sucked.
I saw Austin and Rock both get their asses handed to them to close out plenty of Raws. Cena not so much. Hell back in the day Hogan would at some point get his ass kicked to the upmost only to eventually overcome a foe that you legitimately had him beat.
The best feuds for Cena have been Nexus, Edge and Batista and all of those involved a level of the other party getting the best of him that usually does not occur to Cena. He gets treated with far more importance than anybody else on the roster. Who else could lose a match at a major PPV, get injured according to the WWE during the match and then have their first match back be a scheduled world title match and not even against the guy who injured them.

The thing about the Punk issue was it was NOT about Cena vs. Punk..it was MCMAHON vs. Punk. The only dude that I've seen get the best of Cena was Sheamus. Sheamus won two high-profile matches with Cena and I don't recall ANYONE doing that. Everyone expected Cena to get the title back from him and he didn't which is unique because Cena eventually got all his wins back against everyone else. But I agree with you that Edge and Batista were built up to look like genuine threats to Cena (specifically Edge)

Videos of Dusty getting his ass whooped have been posted. Here is one in which Dusty beats ass after Tully attacks a permanately injured Magnum TA. Dusty whooped ass when pushed to the edge:yes:. I remember marking out to this as a kid. I wanted Dusty to destroy Blanchard:lol:

Oh, yeah..the Midnight Rider. He went around beating the BRAKES off people..

I liked this too (LMBAO @ Hawk choking the shit out of Flair in the corner at the 1:58 mark)

When babyfaces sought out revenge to destroy heels, you can tell the heels getting the beatdown deserved it and had it coming for a long time for their dastardly deeds. When faces snap.

That was the difference between the NWA and the WWF. WWF was all, "I'll get my revenge in the ring." NWA was like, "fuck that, we're banging out in the parking lot."

Here another good one out of Memphis:

imagine that happening to either cena or zack ryder on Raw..if JR were still announcing he'd be like "MAH GAWD SOMEONE GET A AMBULANCE!!! GET SOME DAMN HELP OUT THERE!!!" ..then after the commercial break the announcers would be talking in their"serious" voices

Here another good one out of Memphis:

Lawler pulled off that well. He could have been a professional stuntman. Memphis had classic angles. This next one is from Puerto Rico. Carlos Colon is the catch of the day(net and all) for Abdullah the Butcher. I still feel that Puerto Rico covered up the Invader's role in Bruiser Brody's death:smh:.

Oh they did. The American wrestlers didn't testify because they were scared to death.

This one fucked with me when I was little. I really hated that dude:

See how the cops had to run out and hold the fans back?

The Puerto Rican promotion was probably ran by a cartel for all we know:eek:. Tony Atlas has said he knows what happened but yeah, while in Puerto Rico they were shook.

Yeah I hated Colonel DeBeers, he had a great gimmick. He was years before ahead of the game before the WWE tried to bring back south african white wrestlers as the lame Truth Commision:smh:.

I was actually surprised McMahon didn't do a racist gimmick. I mean the gang wars thing they did was tame as hell. Debeers came out and basically said, "Fuck yall niggas."

Here is Lawler vs. Terry Funk in an empty arena match. Funk had one of the most maniacal screams in wrestling.

Or in the dressing room. Or at a gas station.
That was the difference between then and now. When a guy goes on tv and talks about how much he hates you and wants to beat your ass, it shouldn't stop just because my entrance music isn't qued up.

And then they would go back to laughing at Santino and drooling over Kelly Kelly.

Colon and 'em had Puerto Rico on lock. Brody had a rep for being a dick and sometimes a bully but he didn't deserve to be stabbed and left to bleed out in a dirty shower.

I watched this on tv the week it aired and it's stuck with me ever since. Now guys get dropped on the floor all the time but I can't remember anyone taking a fall from that height and DeBeers came off like a killer.
Unfortunately, the AWA never followed up with and let Snuka tear his ass up around the territory.

Yo. Kane told John Cena he was going to beat him up so bad, he wouldn't be see again UNTIL WrestleMania. I was WTF?! Nigga, you're supposed to say he's not going to make it to WM. Vince should have fired whoever wrote that shit.

scsa was so serious! why was rock smiling like cena was? another point proven.:dance::dance:
i mean what's so funny rock?

You really don't see the difference?

One, Rock is a heel, mocking the crowd and Steve Austin.

Two, Cena is not a heel and has had this same guy riding his ass for a year. They should be passed the "snarky smile" phase.

Did you just start watching wrestling? It's okay if you did, new fans are great, I'm just curious.

I'm loving all of these throwback clips. I really miss the old days when crowds use to stand and scream. Just watching it makes me get hype. Crowds today just sit and politely chant shit. I miss it when they had actual cops on hands because people were so hype that they might really jump the barricade.

I do miss the days when they used to really jump the barricades.

listing my dude i'm not trying to go on and on with this back and forth shit. i see what your talking about! i'm 37 years old i can go back my dude. i'm just saying..it's not the same wwf that's we were use too, but we can't just blame cena for all of this! that's all i'm saying.but to be fare UPGRADE DAVE the way you guys are up here acting like cena is the total blame for wwe's down fall.nah!:smh: let cena turn bad ,kill this p.g era and i bet you he will still be one , if not the best heel in the company.it's not that hard, theres not to much comp there now!:smh:
