INTERNET giant Facebook is accessing smartphone users' personal text messages, an investigation revealed today.

Facebook admitted reading text messages belonging to smartphone users who downloaded the social-networking app and said that it was accessing the data as part of a trial to launch its own messaging service, The (London) Sunday Times reported.

Other well-known companies accessing smartphone users' personal data - such as text messages - include photo-sharing site Flickr, dating site Badoo and Yahoo Messenger, the paper said.

It claimed that some apps even allow companies to intercept phone calls - while others, such as YouTube, are capable of remotely accessing and operating users' smartphone cameras to take photographs or videos at any time.

Security app My Remote Lock and the app Tennis Juggling Game were among smaller companies' apps that may intercept users' calls, the paper said.

Emma Draper, of the Privacy International campaign group, said, "Your personal information is a precious commodity, and companies will go to great lengths to get their hands on as much of it as possible."

More than 400,000 apps can be downloaded to Android phones, and more than 500,000 are available for iPhones - with all apps downloaded from Apple's App Store covered by the same terms and conditions policy.

According to a YouGov poll for the newspaper, 70 per cent of smartphone users rarely or never read the terms and conditions policy when they download an app.

Can you read? It's not about your number on your page. The app you download to your phone is reading your text messages.

yep, that's why I don't fuck with the APP, plus that shit drains the fuck out of your battery. I only use the mobile page if I have to

Fucked up how the government is gung ho on protecting the rights of companies from misuse from the public, but when the tables turn they could give 2 shits. :smh::smh::smh:

yep let me or you pull some shit like this off and see how fast we would be in jail

To all the people saying people using FB or the FB app are getting what they deserve etc, don't you dare think you're spared just because you aren't on FB. It's coming down to if you have a cellphone, mainly a smartphone period you are at risk. No one is spared anymore.

They are using GPSs' on phones now to track wanted individuals to issue certain type warrants. So at this rate we all are fucked.

Sad but true. That's why I went back to paying cash for most things and trying not to divulge too much info about my daily activities. I know a lot about me is already in a database somewhere but I'm not going to volunteer info anymore. My homeboy was dumbfounded as to why I wouldn't get a Ralph's grocery rewards card. "They send me coupons of the exact products I've purchased before." Naw, I'll pass. :smh:

Yeah I'm trying to pull myself out of a lot databases now. I don't trust these things anymore

Too late.

Visa, mastercard, amex all share info.

Every website collect the site you came from, how long you stay on each page, where you went after.

All the "free" email services like gmail, yahoo etc all parse the contents of your emails and send targeted ads on the side.

Google is consolidating all their services, email, google+, searches etc.
With one swoop they could cut you off from online existence.

My internet went down last night and I couldn't use my computer for anything :hmm:

We are already in this damn matrix!

People just need to be smart about the shit they do. FB and other "social media" sites are used now, even to where it's the main method, of background checks, on anything from a job, credit, to medical history, etc. Talking about getting off of databases is a joke, the day your born, enroll in school, have a accident, etc, your already a file. People say all the time you can get off the grid, you can't. Unless you live alone on some planet no one knows, people will always have something about you. Name, family, how your getting that money to live, etc. If people were just wise about the stuff they post, share, etc, you wouldn't be such a large target for information gathering. But now day's people post about what they do, where they are, who they just fucked, where they killed someone, etc, and your making it way to easy. FB and other sites want as much on you as possible, so if you need to have FB and the like, don't fucking post, or allow others to post, your entire fucking life story, cause FB and your "friends" aren't the only ones seeing all that information.

Some of you dudes are so paranoid..I dont see how yall live like this.:smh:

If you read what the app does before you install it already explains this. You arr giving the app permission to edit/read your sms/text messages, modify your memory card, etc.

Not paranoia if they're really after you...which they are. Again, I'm not going to volunteer any info. Paying cash isn't burdensome. There's an ATM on every corner and using cash is actually part of my budgeting strategy. I could see your point if I were advocating paying for everything with a fake ID while wearing a fake mustache.

People don't realize the second you get in trouble with the law whether it is a traffic ticket or a serious Felony.......If you've ever had to be finger printed you are already in the damn system.

who didn't know

who doesn't know about GPS

who doesn't know the camera can watch you

and the microphone can hear you

where the hell does the false sense of privacy come from?

But regardless of that, if they want to come get you, they going to come get you regardless..........do what you do till your time is up.............fuck it.
