WBC junior middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (39-0-1, 29KOs) believes Floyd Mayweather Jr. selected Miguel Cotto as his May 5th opponent because the Puerto Rican veteran is "an easier" fight. Alvarez and Cotto were the two boxers being considered for Mayweather's next fight. Cotto, the WBA's champion, was Mayweather's final choice.
The event, which takes place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, will feature Alvarez in the co-feature against former three division world champion "Sugar' Shane Mosley. Alvarez hopes to face Mayweather in 2013.
"Mayweather has the power to decide [his opponents] and he can do it one day because right now he's sitting on the throne. He chose to fight with Cotto, because he believes that he has less speed, moves a lot less and perhaps because he hasn't been the same [fighter as he was in the past]," Canelo said.

Mayorga wasn't competitive at all in that fight, Cotto out boxed him the whole fight, smartly I might add - and then knocked him out. Dude's style is all kinds of fucked up. The only dude that's really been able to look spectacular against Ricardo is Trinidad. Oscar won but looked crappy the whole fight until the ko and the same with Shane. Mayorga might not be elite but styles always make fights and his style is not compatible with many elite fighters. I still think Cotto wasn't going to take any risky fights in anticipation of his contract running out with Arum. Dude wanted to make some real money against a real opponent. If it wasn't anything to do with Top Rank - why did the Floyd fight get made the minute Cotto left Arum? I'm confident if Cotto hadn't been with Arum, this fight would have happened a while back.
