What part of OUR history that you know about, but are surprised other blacks don't?

Re: What part of OUR history that you know about, but are surprised other blacks don'

I didn't know about Dumas...and I love the Count of Montecristo... I knew the guy was french...according to wikipedia his mother was haitian/creole

Mine:
Americans think the first time black folx were introduced to Christianity was after becoming enslaved. Ethiopia had Christianity as its official religion centuries ago. According to biblical text it was introduced to them in biblical times. It is the primary religion there today:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Religion_in_Ethiopia

There' a major difference in how northern africans in that particular region practiced christianity.

And how the europeans practice it in the americas.

And also. Most black african slaves that were brought to the americas, were from western, to south western africa. There were slaves who were taken from the south east of africa but they went to south america. They didn't practice christianity either.

Re: What part of OUR history that you know about, but are surprised other blacks don'

We had a spiritual system that suited our needs before the advent of Christianity, Judaism, and Islam and it is still being practiced by blacks who have maintained their culture and way of life.

The only thing more addictive, and so extremely hard for them quit is that damn Jesus.

Freaking CRACK for the simple minded.

1. Marcus Garvey and the extent and scale of his contributions.

Of course I've been familiar with Garvey and the Black Star Line, but only in the past few years have I begun doing extensive reading on the honoroable Marcus Mosiah Garvey and his global empowerment/improvement movement. Very enlightening coming into that knowledge.

Re: What part of OUR history that you know about, but are surprised other blacks don'

so many things....

Timbukto
Blacks led europeans out of their dark age and into their "renaissance"
Blacks ruled Spain and taught them how to build ship, build sewer systems with fresh running water, how to cicumnavigate the world reading the stars
Blacks were already in the "new world" before whites got here
Taught whites Math and the cypher
etc

This^^^
N who r inventors were, as if we never did anything at all, but white people already admitted that we were here first along with that the people in the Bible are people of color!

Although he had ceded much territory,
Moshoeshoe never suffered a major military defeat and retained most of his kingdom and all of his culture.

Truely one of my inspirations:dance:

Good find

Re: What part of OUR history that you know about, but are surprised other blacks don'

knew some of this stuff, but not all of it:cool:

most people who talk about black people heading back to africa en masse don't know the history of liberia.

most people don't know that haiti is the only other country in the western hemisphere (besides the U.S.) who acquired independence through violent revolution, and was subsequently systematically destroyed; ironically by france and the u.s.; countries who ought to have sympathized with the rebellious spirit.

Liberia, Ethiopia, Haiti...the histories of these three countries and their importance need to be taught to every Black person in America. I'm sure other people in general around the world know of at least the basics. I doubt many of our skin in high school would be able to pick out the general area of these countries on a map let alone tell why they are so important to our legacy.

Re: What part of OUR history that you know about, but are surprised other blacks don'

You dare steal the teachings of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad and present it as your own? Woe onto you! It would have been better for you to tie a milestone around your neck, cast yourself at the bottom of the sea, than to plagerize the teaching of the Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad to whom all praises is due!

Read my post again, MY BROTHER! I did not take ownership of the quote.

I heard/read a quote somewhere that simply stated: We had all the riches of the world at out disposal. We were invaded by crusaders with bibles in hand and traded all of our riches. Now we have all the bibles and they have all the riches.

Bump ^^^^^^^^^ Black folks kill me when they talk about christianity being a white mans religion. It was practiced in Ethiopia way before the pilgrimages. The white man repackaged it, and put a white face on it then sold it back to our dumb asses.

Damned if that ain't the truth. God is all you need.

Jesus? Did he even exist? There is no one alive now that was alive then that can prove it to me or anyone else. Not even the man sitting next to the man sitting next to the man sitting next to the GOTDAMNED man was alive when he supposedly lived, AND with history full of lies, half truths, 1/3 truths, & POV askew bull I question EVERYTHING.

God I can accept. There has to be a higher power, I have seen some amazing things, been through some crazy things that prove to me that a higher power of sorts IS out there. Outside of that I have my doubts and my questions of why this All Powerful being lets bad things happen to good people and babies/children, but that is another story.

The fact that some book written by man (man put pen to paper and wrote the bible, no one with sense can question that) holds the answers to everything is an amazing story. The bible is as close to a true story as a "Based on a True Story" you get from Hollywood, and you know all of those are half bullshit to make it more interesting. To have people thinking that they cannot speak to God, they need a go-between in the form of a preacher, bishop, priest. That they need to give 10% of their money to The Church, not just a good cause or a needy person, but The Church.

I could go on and on. If Jesus is real I will find out when I die...or, I will die and nothing will happen but me just being dead. I say you don't need a bible. YOu take the 10 commandments and follow that and you are a good person. How can people so believe a story that was FINALLY written down maybe 100 years after the so-called events. Remember playing the pass-down game in school where something is said on one side of the room and when it gets to the other side it is completely different. That is in a classroom during a 5 minute stretch...10, 100 years or even one and that story is full of half truths and fill-ins.

I use to be pissed when I saw a "Black Lawn Jockey" until I learned the History.

Each One Teach One....

kogerbooks.jpg

At 3am on December 26, 1776 George Washington's colonial army in Pennsylvania crossed the Delaware river and attacked the British at Trenton, New Jersey. Legend has it Washington's groomsman, a 12-year-old slave boy named Jocko Graves, stayed on the Pennsylvania shore taking care of Washington's horses, holding up a lantern to mark the location. In 1776, a "groomsman" referred to "a man or boy in charge of feeding, conditioning, and stabling of horses.

gw4.jpg

But legend tells of one more casualty... Jocko, who was found frozen to death on the Pennsylvania shore while still holding the lantern when Washington returned at noon on December 26, 1776. Legend has it that upon Washington's return to his Mount Vernon, Virginia home, he was so inspired by Jocko's heroism, he commissioned a cast iron statue of Jocko holding a lantern and called it the "Faithful Groomsman". The "welcome/coming home" theme of these statues started here, and with an ironic double meaning: "coming home" being also used as a metaphor for "dying and going to heaven" from Christian theology. The last name "Graves" associated with the statue also offers a cryptic allusion to a cemetary grave- was the original statue a grave marker for Jocko? Taking into account that very few slaves had last names in colonial America, the grave marker explanation seems plausible.

They were also used in the underground railroad to help guide slaves to freedom. The arm would point in the direction of Freedom with a green ribbon or a red ribbon representing danger.

Re: What part of OUR history that you know about, but are surprised other blacks don'

That people treat african history as something you can contain in only one month and not simply history. Black history is american history, should be integrated fully into schools on the very purpose that you can't remove instances from a chronology because you are too much of a coward to see what has been done. Even accepting the bullshit for a month is insulting

All history is relevant for introspection....
think people would've figured that out by now

you are totally right! I had an argument with a friend of mines and I told her that I am reading up on my history and learning new things about our people! She responded that american history is our history! I said you are my dear crazy and so misinformed! I also said that it should have been our history as well if they would have put us in that book as we was in history! Not just as slaves! This america was built with our hands and on our backs!

Bump ^^^^^^^^^ Black folks kill me when they talk about christianity being a white mans religion. It was practiced in Ethiopia way before the pilgrimages. The white man repackaged it, and put a white face on it then sold it back to our dumb asses.

Which replaced a religion which they held since inception. It was part of its expansion no less than islam... used to manipulate a foreign nation from worshipping their savage gods for this one...
Remember the fact that regardless of when they started, it wasn't original... even with the Ethiopians the religion itself was new.
secondly, history has already shown the limitations of monotheistic endeavors for blacks, when your own church said you were not humans and deserving the title as slaves..

All monotheistic religions has enslaved the african, all used the rhetoric of their god as a reason to enslave and PROFIT off you. All members of said religions have removed more resources and wealth from the nation than these modern blood suckers who merely want gold, oil, and metal from the Congo.

Pick a history book being black history month and simply review their actions against you and their so called words of god..
A thief is a thief

The Truth About:
Black People &Their Place In World History
Dr. Leroy Vaughn, MD, MBA

All of the elements of civilization first began in Africa, including religion, art, science, government, mining, writing, mathematics, architecture, engineering, andagriculture. Dr. Charles Nelson at the University of Massachusetts states thatanimal domestication occurred in Kenya 15,000 years ago; and that agriculturalsites have been carbon dated in Egypt to 18,000 BC.The oldest numeration system was found in Zaire by Dr. Jean de Heinzelin withmarkings on the Ishango Bone dated 8000 BC.

She also said that the people werefamiliar with prime numbers and multiplication by two since the markings were paired at 3-6, 4-8, and 5-10.Astronomy and astrology are believed to have existed for almost 50,000 years. Theoldest stellar calendar is dated 4241 BC. It has 365 1/4 days and 12 months with30 days in each month. The ancient Africans were also the first to divide the dayinto 24 hours and to begin the day at midnight.African medical textbooks have been found that are over 5,000 years old. AncientAfricans were very well versed in medical diagnosis and treatment with as many as1,000 animal, plant and mineral products used in the treatment of illness.

All religions are believed to have originated in Africa, including Hinduism,Buddhism, Christianity, and Islam. General Massey states that the religiousrecords of all religions including the Christian Bible are traceable and in manycases are direct copies of the religious records of ancient Egypt and Nubia. St.Augustine, one of the founding fathers of Christian Theology, wrote "What is nowcalled the Christian religion has existed among the ancients and was not absentfrom the beginning of the human race.

Re: What part of OUR history that you know about, but are surprised other blacks don'

Just one more added note about religion..

THE BLACK MADONNA

Isis was a Black African goddess of Nile Valley civilizations whose worshipeventually diffused to most of the ancient world. Isis was worshipped by the Nubians well over 300 years before the first Egyptian dynasty. The Egyptians thengave the Isis religion to Greece, Rome, and Western Asia. Gerald Massey says thatthe religious records of all the world’s religions including Hinduism, Buddhism, and Christianity are nothing more than copies of the religious records of the Black goddess Isis, her son Horus, and her husband Osiris. For example, Horus was thefirst child born from a virgin mother's Immaculate Conception, and he was said tohave walked on water just as Jesus later did. The Black goddess Isis is alsocredited with resurrecting Osiris after he was murdered.

The first "Black Madonna and Child" statutes and portraits were of Isis and Horus, and these were taken throughout the world by the Roman Empire. When other religions became more popular, these statues were not destroyed, but simply hadtheir names changed. In India, Isis and Horus became Maya and Buddha inBuddhism or Devaki and Krishna in Hinduism. The Chinese called Isis Kwa-yin,and the Japanese changed the name to Kwannon.
