I have some questions for the ones who are of foreign descent who are always talking about how you have prospered in America. I want to know what kind of prosperity have you gotten.

I am curious. I don't see it. The only thing I see West Indians, Africans, or Hispanics are maybe with a few corner stores, some may have houses, or an auto shop but that's about it. But you cats make it seems like you came over here and in a few years you own some major businesses like insurance companies, banks, investment companies, etc. Maybe your idea of being prosperous is different from mine.

Please give me some stories of how you and your peeps have not complained, but 'worked hard' and have prospered after being here for a few years. I really want to hear it. It sounds like a miracle to me.

Just saying that you or your parents came here and prospered is not good enough anymore, be specific.

I know this is a silly road to go down because nothing posted will be good enough, but I decided to use this opportunity to highlight a brother I am proud of.

There were laws set against non whites especially Blacks in America to keep blacks from advancing. Your daughter could easily be raped by a white mob. There were restrictions set against foreign non whites to not come into America as well. You could easily be kept out of public places like hotels, buses, stores, etc. Blacks were denied business loans for decades and you all wonder why it was hard to get ahead. When we did create black Wall Street it was destroyed and no restitution was given. If you went to certain places you could end up getting beaten to death.

These are things that you foreign blacks, Hispanics, Asians, whites do not know, acknowledge, or refuse to accept. But all of this changed with the Black Americans fighting for the Civil Right's Bill in the 1960s.

The African-American story is very powerful and rich and sadly also very neglected by the mainstream media which is why I enjoyed watching Hidden Colors.

But respecting the ones who made it possible (And I do so believe me) has nothing to do with the ones who are not doing shit, or who are making it even worse in the eyes of many immigrants.

This is not my views so I cannot argue for them I respect everybody unless they give me direct reasons not to.

I think immigrants of color and A_A can learn a lot from each other, I like the hustle mentality of the hood but I can also dig the education drive my parents tried to instill in me.

Agree with this, by and large. The back and forth hate only benefits the 1%. Once all recognize that divide and conquer is the game, along with realizing that American blacks payed a high price-that allowed others of color to reap the benefits of this country (such as they are), then all can move forward.

Speaking as a black American, how can we demand respect from others (immigrants as you say) when we do not even respect ourselves. We sell poison to our own communities, our men are absent from their homes and leave the women to raise the children alone, we allow others to come in to our neighborhoods and sell us sub par food, electronics, and other merchandise. And as for the "rich" black folk, the majority of them leave the black community to be closer to whites since their ice is colder. Now why would foreigners respect us when they see we cannot and will not respect ourselves.

I remember when Jason Pierre-Paul parents lived in my hometown. His step dad was a cool guy, and I remember how blacks Americans use to mess with Haitians for no other reason than they worked their azz off to create a better life for their kids. Immigrants from every ethnicity are unaware of America's wicked history in regards to black people. And so are white Americans whose ancestors came here from Europe or wherever.

Couple of ideas:

1. Under-estimating the value of culture.
Immigrants come here with their culture intact, most times that culture emphasizes family and hard work in the face of adversity.

2. Expectation levels
Expectation levels for kids are much higher than expectations levels for AA. AA takes a sense of pride to achieve goals the white man has set for him e.g. college degree vs business ownership

3. Controlling you own destiny
AA keep begging the white man for mercy and sympathy.
If a man has his foot on your neck, why are you asking him to take it off? Why are you pleading with him?
Throw the fucking thing off your neck and mobilize.

4. The family unit
This is an American thing.
Capitalism doesn't work for poor people, there needs to be an element of socialism i.e. looking out for each other.
It's inherent in cultures that migrate here.
AA feel a sense of unbridled pride to leave their past behind based on a "job".


5. The value of sacrifice
This is an American problem not just an AA problem.
The fact that immigrants came here means that they have already made one of the greatest sacrifices and as a result they are relentless in their pursuit of their goals no matter what the white man may do.


Now to correct some mis-conceptions in this thread:

1. African and caribbean immigrants have been at the forefront of the Civil Rights struggle
Examples are
a. Marcus Garvey who African Americans REFUSE to honor because he was Jamaican.
This man grew the largest collection of Africans in Africa, the UNIA and the diaspora and we were about to throw off the shackle of white supremacy worldwide.

b. Malcolm X's parents were immigrants from Grenada and met at a UNIA (Marcus Garvey) meeting.

c. Stokely Carmichael who coined the phrase "Black Power" was from Trinidad


I could keep going all day with this shit but you get the point.

We are all in this together so for AA to say black immigrants benefit from "their" struggle is not the whole truth.

Mentalities like these is why some immigrants skip over the bullshit.

Some African Americans willingly portray themselves as gangstas, drug dealing, rapping, video vixen etc.... but have a problem with black immigrants not identifying with that?

In any case poverty is not an excuse for hard work and focus.

3. Africans are more aware and immigrant Europeans are also more aware of how the system is set wrt discrimination.
They set up alternate systems for their prosperity.
Asians use Subway, gas stations, Quiznos etc.. to get their family here via immigration. Once the family gets here they go to community college and eventually go to college.
The others that passed before hook these fresh of the boat ones up with corporate jobs etc....

There is shit set aside to take advantage of, we as black people have to get it in larger numbers and stop relying on the approval and mercy of the fucking white man.

America does not important poverty. So these so called folks whom came here with nothing is a lie. You would not be permitted into this country legally without first demonstrating that you have something to offer this country and poverty aint one them. The truth of the matter is most of the people that step foot on the American soil already have some form of skill and business sense.
These folks also have not be the subject of hundreds of years of racial sabotage (slavery/black codes) etc....

Even though I mention the Civil Rights Movement and the Civil Right's Bill, I feel integration destroyed blacks. Blacks seemed to be better off segregated. Blacks were forced to create their own jobs such as Black Wall Street. They were very into education.

But Now blacks have to rely on their enemies for employment.
This is the issue many non-American blacks have with African-Americans

Blacks were more together when they were outright segregated. They relied on themselves. When integration happened, blacks began taking their money to white businesses. It cause most black businesses to go out of service.

Again, I agree business wise

Whites really do not want integration with blacks. They may smile at you over this issue but they do not respect you. Blacks are the only people who with this multicultural shit. Whites respect those blacks who show no interest in being with whites.

It only goes to show how ineffective we have been at educating people about the true effects of slavery on Blacks brought to this country. Immigrants that come to this countyr for a better life don't have their language stripped from them...their families aren't broken apart and sold...they aren't forced to assimilate with a culture at the expense of losing their own. So I chalk this up to sheer ignorance as to how absolutely devastating slavery was and still is on people of African ancestry in this country.

true that, I can't really answer that question because I was too young to have any say in the decision to come here.........and every time I go back to CR I see nothing but opportunity. from what mom dukes tells me things weren't quite as nice in the 70's and 80's in Central American because of shit jumping off in Nicaragua to our north and Panama to our south......as kids in their early 20's they made a choice to come to America because of the uncertainty in our region of the world, and because of all the opportunities they had heard of in the US.

as of now, my plan is to wait until my kids go off to college and then I'm out......back to CR with wifey, she's Trini so she's down with the plan

you can only hold on to those excuses for so long, my family didn't have shit, we came to this country in 86 from Costa Rica, landed in the Bronx NY.......so now, not only are we black in America but we can't speak english either........and guess what, we all put in the effort and got the fuck out that muthfuka and while we ain't "rich" , we're very very comfortable.

from time to time I go back to the hood to catch up with some people, and most of the brothas I grew up with are still there.......doing the same non-productive bullshit making excuses about why they can't catch a break or get out of the hood....
i'm like , we all had the very same opportunities....shiiieeet, it can be said that they had the advantage because they didn't have to learn the language........and still, they didn't do shit!!! and from the looks of it, their kids are heading down the very same path...........
