My poor grandparents came from Russia and made it in America so why can't black folks

Re: My poor grandparents came from Russia and made it in America so why can't black f

Thanks for an excellent post OP  I recently had to make a similar argument to a fellow African... I asked him how he could make a similar statement as the title of the thread when the odds have been systematically stacked against you from the very start.

And some of ya'll are attacking the OP like he's the one making the statement when he's only making an example of what other people say:dunno: His post is trying to dispel the title of the thread...some of you should really learn to read properly:hmm:

Re: My poor grandparents came from Russia and made it in America so why can't black f

The real problem is people not minding their business

Either you can help or you can't.

And if you study people everybodies shit makes sense.

This is not a form of concern.

Damian, do I understand you correct in saying what holds ppl back is their attitude? Therefore if people change their way of thinking they would prosper?

Firstly, I would want to see real evidence besides anecdotal stories that Afro-Caribbeans and Africans are more successful in America.

You are aware of a study that was done in which fictitious resumes with "white" and "Black" sounding names were send to help wanted adds in Boston and Chicago. Now regardless of the education white sounding names received the higher call back rate. And I believe whites even received a higher callback rate when a criminal record was added to their resume. Here are some links to the study:

To quote William Faukner; The Past in never dead in fact it's not even past.

Listen to me it's all about perception.

I do not deny African-Americans are being held back because of established most times covert prejudices against them.

But...

Why Africans and Afro-Caribbeans can come to the USA and prosper is because when they get here they only see OPPORTUNITY They do not dwell on what was done before because they have a different perspective.

They are going to keep trying until they make it better for themselves.

If blacks were the most educated groups in America and were still denied those high paying jobs then we'd have some serious public outcry available to us.

The street game is only good for survival, you have to graduate from it to a legit business and then hire each other in order to make it as a group.

I have to go to work but I'll be back later.

Re: My poor grandparents came from Russia and made it in America so why can't black f

Hmmm ... why couldn't THEY make it where THEY came from? I'm sure there were many examples of people who did.

Bro, i'm sure you realize that just because you were BORN in America means you have to stay in America.

People chase opportunity worldwide. There are several Americans who are business owners in Jamaica. Couldn't they make it in their own country too? That's just how it works.

The bottom line is those who know what they want will go for it. Those who have no clue what they have will squander it.

Re: My poor grandparents came from Russia and made it in America so why can't black f

There is white privilege in America, and there are low-standards and excuses in the AMERICAN black community; There couldn't be a more deadly combination. :smh: :smh:

The past was much, much different. A lot of black people walking the streets today would have a nervous breakdown if they had to deal with what our ancestors did.

Currently we are letting African, Chinese, Mexican and Indian immigrants eat our lunch, and we have no one to blame but ourselves.

true that, I can't really answer that question because I was too young to have any say in the decision to come here.........and every time I go back to CR I see nothing but opportunity. from what mom dukes tells me things weren't quite as nice in the 70's and 80's in Central American because of shit jumping off in Nicaragua to our north and Panama to our south......as kids in their early 20's they made a choice to come to America because of the uncertainty in our region of the world, and because of all the opportunities they had heard of in the US.

as of now, my plan is to wait until my kids go off to college and then I'm out......back to CR with wifey, she's Trini so she's down with the plan:cool:

Lexdiamonnyc, I disagree with the idea that you can make it anywhere if you try hard enough. I would like to believe that this is true but I'm afraid it is not.
In my analogy Barack Obama didn't become president because today everything is possible but because he is beyond exceptional. As stated below I think what people refer to as the past, is not so past at all.

Yep. How can it be okay for them to not blame their native government for not coming up economically, but it is wrong for blacks who have been in America for hundreds of years to blame the system here. Can't have it both ways.

The reason why other groups succeed is they have a real culture and practice cooperative economics.

Re: My poor grandparents came from Russia and made it in America so why can't black f

ok, so what's the excuse for the current generation??:dunno:

is the man still holding them back??:dunno:

you can only hold on to those excuses for so long, my family didn't have shit, we came to this country in 86 from Costa Rica, landed in the Bronx NY.......so now, not only are we black in America but we can't speak english either........and guess what, we all put in the effort and got the fuck out that muthfuka and while we ain't "rich" , we're very very comfortable.

from time to time I go back to the hood to catch up with some people, and most of the brothas I grew up with are still there.......doing the same non-productive bullshit making excuses about why they can't catch a break or get out of the hood....
i'm like , we all had the very same opportunities....shiiieeet, it can be said that they had the advantage because they didn't have to learn the language........and still, they didn't do shit!!! and from the looks of it, their kids are heading down the very same path...........

I don't understand that shit.....:smh::dunno:

mistake no.1 of your argument: claiming legitimate pre-meditated policy as "excuses"
mistake no.2 of your argument: having no generational reference to the plight of blacks in america, yes I said it, and yes I mean it. Being hispanic (which is what you are, whether you claim it or not) in the Bronx in the 80's had a level of oppression that was as quickly overcome as saying "yo hablo espanol, soy de costa rica."

it's just like 1st generation Africans coming here and making the exact same arguments as you, sure you're brown but you have NO REFERENCE to years of cultural conditioning that have been placed in the American subconscious.

It's a little insincere btw to make it seem like Spanish in the Bronx isn't spoken as heavily as English so to make it seem like it was some big dramatic story to overcome is complete bullshit.

Re: My poor grandparents came from Russia and made it in America so why can't black f

Theres plenty of generational poverty in Black America....but the title of this thread only applies to the minority of Black America. Most Black folks recognize the opportunities within this country. Some of us are able to take advantage of those opportunities, but some of us arent due to lack of access. Most Black folks dont want handouts or caretakers...THEY JUST WANT ACCESS.

A lot of them believe that African-Americans don't understand the power of unity in the sense of business.

A lot dont. And when I type about unity I dont me unifying with all Black people....because truth be told no group is completely unified. Whites folks aint unified....Mexicans aint unified (thats why millions of them have to jump the borders and sneak into the US).......... Africans aint unified.....Asians aint unified....etc etc. But one thing that a lot of these groups have figured out is the fact that you dont have to unify on a large scale in order to make moves. Just grab a few like minded people and start from there. If we had more Black folks that knew had to prioritize and didnt waste their time worrying about our flawed minority, what White folks think, etc etc...then threads like this one wouldnt even exist.

Another big factor in our struggle is the lack of respect for our own people. You got millions of Blacks thats disgusted about being Black/African, so when they see someone that looks just like them they reflect that lack of respect that they have for themselves on other Black people.

btw.....a lot of Black Africans, Caribbean folks, etc also dislike Black Americans because of what theyve learned from ignorant White folks. A lot of Africans & Caribbean Blacks dislike being Black just as much as the millions of dumbfounded Black Americans. Theyre just as fucked up! They embrace White supremacy, hence they embrace Black inferiority as well.

Many of them dont like Black Americans, but if it wasnt FOR US no person of color would be able to live in peace in the USA. When we fought for our rights we were really indirectly fighting for the rights of all people of color. Mexicans, Asians, Africans, Indians...i can go on and on.....they all should show respect. If it wasnt for Black Americans most of them would have no choice but to stay in the shitholes that they came from.

You got to read between the lines, dude. He is really taking shots a black Americans. He is criticizing. He is not wondering out of helping curiosity. Also, there is no documented proof that West Indians are doing better than black Americans; it's a West Indian fantasy. How are they doing better? What major business do they have? What banks, hospitals, airports, universities do they have?

When this issue of Black Americans comes up you really see the demonic side of these foreigner come out hard. That's why i am all for deporting them.

European immigrants can succeed because they can assimilate due to their skin color. A Russian family can move next door and not ruffle any feathers because no one would know their are Russian unless they speak.

Black America is in the State that where in Because Most Black Americans you run into are lazy and only think about how they can get more food stamps and section 8 they can get. I will keep it 100%.

Its 2000 fucking 12 (2012) You got fucking Chinese Immigrants that can barley speak English owning 3-4 Businesses in the hood.

I always tell people I can Give a Black Kid $250,000 and i give a Chinese kid $250,000 and leave and come back 10 Years. That Chinese Kid would flip the money and have Business and Conglomerates. The Black Kid would have old beat up clothes and busted Rims.

We spend all our Money on Bullshit (Cars, Clothes, Jewelry) and don't have any wealth to pass to our Kids.

Lol, reading is fundamental. However there may be some truth to the accusation that it is a somewhat provocative title.

But more important people believe the history of racial oppression has come to an end in this country. However the mass incarceration of Black and Latino people shows that it has not. :(

West Indians & Africans believe in White Supremacy?..you simple minded Kneegrows...:smh:

have you ever talk to an African there is no one more prideful in his/her race/culture than an African...

my parents (Haiti & Ghanaian) came here with nothing...could not speak english...and were heavily discriminated by AA's before you talk about foreign blacks hate AA's...

they work their asses off....got an education...bought houses...now living the good life...the problem is not AA's its Americans as a whole....

foreigners come here looking to build...make money & are more unified than Americans...thats why they come here & prosper in education...business etc...

Americans get mad at the foreigners...but the opportunity is there...but they rather complain than take advantage...while some Haitian, Nigerian or Chinese person comes here and in a few years have something to show...& continue to build for the family or their ppl...

its not rocket science...like another brotha said alot of Americans in General are lazy & rather have shit brought to them then wwork hard for it...NOT ALL JUST SOME...

I do not dispute the facts that there is serious racism when it comes to hiring practices in America, I lived there before moving back to Canada.

What I am saying is, if our stats as blacks were the most educated group that cannot get jobs instead of the most percentage of black males are in jail or with a felony record we could adress those racist practices from a position of strength.

As far as the opportunity thing goes, people including blacks need to travel the world more.

My parents left Haiti for Canada looking for better opportunity, luckily they were both university educated so the transition was not too hard but they had and myself also had to deal with racism.

Now I know Haitians are killing themselves taking those dingy boats in order to make it to American shores because their perception is that Haiti is done for and hopeless.

While me raised in North America when I went to Haiti to visit I only saw opportunity upon opportunity, my perception is totally different from theirs.

Re: My poor grandparents came from Russia and made it in America so why can't black f

You are of course right that change is much easier to accomplish from a position of strength. I'm not sure if you listened to the second outtake, on mass incarceration, but the high incarceration rates themselves are a result of harsh drug laws mostly enforced in neighborhoods of color. For example marijuana possession results in slap on wrist in most western countries not so much in the states.

Also I can't agree with you that if someone has the opportunity to travel they should definitely do so.

Since learning about Haiti's history I have kept an eye on the island, it helps that some of my good friends are of Haitian descent. But I think, and a some of my friends disagree with me, that if Haiti were left alone it could manage itself quite well. However due to external interference the country can't catch a break. But that's a whole other conversation in itself.

Re: My poor grandparents came from Russia and made it in America so why can't black f

I have some questions for the ones who are of foreign descent who are always talking about how you have prospered in America. I want to know what kind of prosperity have you gotten.

I am curious. I don't see it. The only thing I see West Indians, Africans, or Hispanics are maybe with a few corner stores, some may have houses, or an auto shop but that's about it. But you cats make it seems like you came over here and in a few years you own some major businesses like insurance companies, banks, investment companies, etc. Maybe your idea of being prosperous is different from mine.

Please give me some stories of how you and your peeps have not complained, but 'worked hard' and have prospered after being here for a few years. I really want to hear it. It sounds like a miracle to me.

Just saying that you or your parents came here and prospered is not good enough anymore, be specific.

Re: My poor grandparents came from Russia and made it in America so why can't black f

It' really a simple answer...History. It's being rewritten right under your nose and young people don't even realize it's being done. Young folk have fallen for all the false hoods that are a part of hip hop culture and have lost sight of their parents and ancestors struggle. Twenty sum odd years ago when i was in school my generation longed for our identy and our parents and grandparents kept us informed. Now it's all about a dollar or my money as it's said in the community while the forces that be is getting away with changing what's going in text books, our historical events and a perception of who we are as a people.
