So, What Was The Point?
by Mark Madden
July 26, 2011

When Brian Pillman did his worked shoot in 1996, it lasted MONTHS. Pillman bounced from WCW to ECW to WWE, legitimately double-crossing WCW. Eric Bischoff had fired Pillman assuming he’d come back. He didn’t.

C.M. Punk left WWE for two weeks.

So, what was the point?

Oh, Punk and Cena had a cute staredown at the end of Raw. But Punk has clearly been reestablished as just another WWE guy. The absence of Punk’s title didn’t make WWE sweat, not even for two weeks. They just crowned another champ, then passed the belt right back to John Cena. Now Punk and Cena have a UFC-style real champ vs. interim champ unification match at SummerSlam. Cena wins, then heads for WrestleMania and The Rock.

Punk? Maybe he turns babyface and becomes the new Steve Austin, the anti-authoritarian. Or maybe he drops back down to the mid-card.

But how does Punk remain anti-authoritarian? Vince McMahon is gone, and the doofus son-in-law fixed a lot of the crap Punk bitched about.

I hope Punk came back for the money, because I’m praying he wasn’t stupid enough to fall for the promises. But I have my fears. Smarter people than Punk have been set up, blinded to some degree by their own brilliance (and BS).

If Raw’s rating drops, who gets blamed? Not Triple H. Original plans called for Trips to pedigree Punk. Why? Because Triple H is a REAL star. Same as it ever was. Same as it ever was. Same as it ever was. Same as it ever was.

Nobody ever wants to let an angle marinate. Just hot-shot for TV. Hot-shot for the pay-per-view. Punk should have been gone for MONTHS. The title should have been gone for MONTHS. The belt would have gained credibility by its absence. Instead, it’s just another prop. Memo to bookers: You BUILD ratings. You don't SEIZE ratings.

Fire Vince? The WWE board should have fired EVERYBODY.

^^^^^^^
I can't agree with that article more. The whole angle was really a waste if Punk wasn't going to stay away for a couple of months. WWE has been rushing and hot shoting over rivalries and angles all year long. Taker never got any payback on Nexus. Barrett just stepped aside for Punk to take over Nexus. Vince let Nexus whoop his ass then came back to announce Rock was hosting WM. Now Punks misses a week from Raw and he's back. :smh::smh::angry::angry:

I feel u homie, but rey is just kinda lame to me. Those hurricaranas look so lame to me. How in the fuck this lil nigga doin this against 250 lb niggas is cheesey. But I get he has a strong mexican following which is why he should be fighting for the us title, him in that division would increase interest. The ic and us titles are so looked over because wwe is tryin to push too many niggas to main event that ain't ready.

I agree that the secondary titles are overlooked and Rey would be great to bring interest back to them since he's one of the most popular talents on the roster. But he is a main event level guy and was the face and heart of Smackdown. Since he's in his last few good years, he should be used to elevate and/or legitimize guys like Miz and Swagger and McIntyre.

I heard punk would face austin at the ppv. He has to, there isn't anyone on the roster not named cena more over than he is. He has to face a top guy or no one will care. I doubt he faces taker, I think cena will break takers streak in 2 yrs.

Where on earth did you hear that? Austin is retired for the same reason Edge is: injuries. He's done. He dishes out some stunners and some "Hell Yeah"s and that's it. If he was going to come back, it would be against Miz, the heel WWE management is really behind.

But niggas who say they can't stand cena for the most part are just niggas in the iwc who think its cool to go against the grain. If u don't like dude then fine but damn niggas act like homie ain't never lost before. Lol

That's not it at all. I do think some of the Cena stuff is overblown at times and I've said so but the criticisms are legit. His matches are predictable and he does a bad job of selling way too often. I know it's not all his fault and the fault of the writers who book him as SuperCena but he has a lot of freedom in his matches and he doesn't have to be so repetitive, something Chavo Guerrero pointed out. Every wrestler has his favorite moves and spots, the trick is to mix them up so you don't wrestle the same match over and over again.

My gripe with edges title runs are look at the lengths and they don't really justify him being champ that many times. Cena gets it and holds it for a while. Edge would get it, lose it on smackdown, get it at the ppv lose it on the next smackdown and boom he already has 3 runs. The thing that pissed me off was he was always made to look like he didn't deserve it, kinda like how they are carrying christian. Christian can go with anybody in the biz but they make him look weak, niggas don't even respect him being champ and its sad. Y2j would be champ and niggas knew u were in for a fight if you wanted that strap.

That's the problem with management, not Edge. Edge wasn't pushed as "invincible" like Cena so he lost and was only pushed as dominant as a heel. But Edge is more accepted than Cena because he's a better wrestler (in ring and promos) and he wasn't pushed as hard.

I don't think punk was rushed cuz summerslam is the second biggest card of the yr for wwe. Punk vs cena 2 deserves that limelight.

Dude left, quit and is back in two weeks. That killed all the build. Now how will they ever get that kind of angle over again if fans feel it doesn't mean shit? They could have at least built it up for Survivor Series, another tent pole ppv for the company. They have plenty to do for SummerSlam and could have saved Cena and Rey for that and let Rey have a couple weeks of a title reign.

Idk what y'all see in kofi, ain't no way in fuck he deserves to be champ, if that's the case give it to truth first atleast we know he can carry a mainevent match. Kofi is best in the midcard for now until he gets to rework his gimmick as of now kofi would get no reaction to being in the mainevent cuz he's look at as kinda kiddie. His time will come, truth deserves it the most between the 2.

I don't know about Kofi being WWE champ but he's past due for at least having a WWE title program, just to see how he did at that level. The crowds got behind him huge during his feud with Orton and he still gets big pops and has good to great matches but the clock is ticking on him.
I don't see how reworking his gimmick would help him. It's already reworked by having him drop the Jamaican (Ja-Fake-in) accent. Truth is good in his role but they need to cut down on the comedy if they ever want to put him in a money position again.

Wtf did u expect zach to face cena or something. Dude got hardly any reaction when he came out wwe ain't dumb, he needs to be given buildup time. That match was a perfect first one for him, if he battled cole for more than 3 moves it would've been horrible for him.

You are misjudging Zack Ryder's budding popularity. Reading live notes from Smackdown last night and he got huge responses from the live crowd.
I do think by having him work with Cole, still one of their hottest heels, is part of the buildup, so I agree with you on that.

Agreed. While exciting and eventful, that Raw looked like a Vince Russo booked show with all the hotshotting.

All hail the HHH Era... Looks like no black people gonna get a decent push no time soon!:angry::smh::smh::smh:

HHH isn't really in charge let, so don't blame him. I sadly don't expect to see a black WWE/World Champion anytime soon. Booker T will be the last brother to get the strap unless they're force to push Kofi because of someone's injury. I belive Bobby Lashley would have gotten one of the titles eventually but he bolted on them.

BTW was Ron Simmons the first black world champion, because I remember him saying that back in the day.

I was thinking just how many black wrestlers for the WWE since the 90's to now, has never held a title at some point during there WWE stint.

Here's the ones I can remember.

Flash Funk/Too Cold Scorpio
Bad News Brown ( not sure if he was ever IC champ )
Viscera/Mable's partner in Men On A Mission ( They may have held the tag titles but i'm not sure )
Vergil
Junk Yard Dog
Zeus
Elajah Burke/The Pope
Monty Brown ( only there for a few months due to family reasons )

Who else I'm I forgetting?

^^^
Others.
Rodney Mack
JTG/Shad Gaspard(They never held the tag titles)

Just to see if the list is longer of guys who have held a title.

Rock
Ron Simmons
Dlo Brown
Godfather
Koko B Ware ( Was it the late 80's or early 90's when he was IC champ )
Ahmed Johnson
Kofi
Mark Henry
Zeke
Booker T
Lashley
Shelton Benjamin

I'm I forgetting someone?

I wanted to make sure his name wasnt on here cause 1 thing I hate to do is make a mistake and have yall run me down about it but you did forget a big one:

Nelson Frazier, Jr.[2] (born February 14, 1972) is an American professional wrestler and actor, better known by his ring names Mabel, Viscera, Big Daddy V, and King V. He is best known for his work with (the) World Wrestling Federation/Entertainment (WWF/WWE).[1] He is currently signed with All Japan Pro Wrestling.

Throughout his career he has held championships in a number of promotions, including the top titles of the United States Wrestling Association off-shoots Memphis Wrestling[3] and Memphis Championship Wrestling,[4] and the World Wrestling Council promotion of Puerto Rico.[5] He has also held the Hardcore[6] and World Tag Team[7] titles of WWE,[2] and was also the 1995 King of the Ring.

Yeah I forgot Viscera. I mentioned his partner on the orignal list but Dave posted that MOM held the tag titles brifely.

Butch Reed - My favorite black wrestler of the 1980's. Known in the territories as "Hacksaw"(sorry Jim Duggan Reed deserves the title more). Terrible "Natural" gimmick in his WWF stint. He was a respected star in Mid South, Central States, Florida, and Georgia.

Tony Atlas - was over with the fans and he is one of the few wrestlers in history to get clean pins over Hogan. Atlas was badly underutilized by the WWF. Sure he was tag champs with Rocky Johnson, but behind the scenes they did not get along and only defended the tag title like 2 or 3 times. As a singles competitor Atlas was never even given an IC title reign.

Rocky Johnson - father of the Rock, was over with WWF fans before the 1984 Rock and Wrestling explosion. He was never given a singles title either. He had to compete with face time with the likes of Snuka, Andre, Bob Backlund, and Ivan Putski.

Kamala - most feared black heel not named Abdullah. Nuff said. He was not championship material but he should of had some titles. Was a successful monster heel world wide though.

Koko B Ware never held a WWF title. He was a successful tag and singles wrestler in Southern territories but never a champion in WWF.

Random post. This was NWA vs. WWF back in the day. Bob Backlund WWF champ and Ric Flair NWA champ. Had a match in Atlanta but no one has any footage of it:(. This video was a promo for the match.

This next video is very random. This was long before Booker called Hogan a nigga. Mr. Fuji :lol::lol:

Backlund was the truth in the ring but Flair had to hold back to not eat him up on the mic.
That was the last NWA/WWF unification bout ever.

I think this is the first time i've ever agreed with mark madden, the whole punk angle has lost a ton of steam and i don't see them getting it back in the long run.

c/s wwe was getting free press from everyone from ESPN, Colin Cowherd, and Bill Simmons after the Punk angle first started. They were getting praises from former wrestlers and even wrestlers in TNA, and in a months time they have fucked up this whole thing. Summerslam will come and go and that'll be the end of Punk's push

WWE suckered all of us thinking that Punk was really going to leave and take the title to other promotions. Would have been nice if WWE & ROH had some type of agreement like they had with ECW. Punk could go and work matches at ROH and talk shit about being the true champ and still be one of the top talk about guys in the bussiness. What a waste of something that could had been epic.

SPOILER: CM PUNK-WWE UPDATE
by Dave Scherer @ 3:51 PM on 7/27/2011

Chris Denker sent along this note from last night's Smackdown taping. ... During HHH's in-ring promo he stated specifically that he had "re-signed Punk late Monday night".

They really should have let him be off tv for two months while building up Cena as the (interim) WWE champ.

Worst case scenario it's the Nexus redux.

yeah I read them too, I guess Sheamus is a face now ?????? And the big push Mark Henry was having has came to a screaching halt. All we need now is for Drew McIntyre to suddenly get some tv time, speaking of which, they dont know what the fuck to do Zack Ryder it seems.

Henry will probably whoop Sheamus' ass next week.Even HHH is his heyday would back away from a fight but then he'd get the jump and whoop the faces ass soon after.McIntyre should get some TV time. He's a solid wrestler but he shouldn't be shoved down our throats.I think that they're doing what they're doing with Zack Ryder mainly to get his personality over rather than getting him over in the ring. It's not stupid considering that he's gotten over thus far with his Youtube videos that showcase his personality first and foremost.

The smartest thing they could do is have Punk not only win at Summerslam but win cleanly.Cena doesn't need the title,he doesn't the win either. The same people who cheer him and buy his merchandise will continue to do so.Let him move on to some feuds without the title and let having the title and a solid run elevate Punk at the same time eventually bringing in some of his people(Cabana and the Kings of Wrestling) to be solid additions to the roster and get over initially by being affiliated with Punk.Eventually what they bring to the table will take care of the rest.

NoDQ.com > WWE > CM Punk Reveals When He Decided To Stay In WWE
Posted by Dave Mitchell on 07/27/2011 at 03:27 PM

CM PUNK appeared on the BS Report radio show this wee, hosted by ESPN's Bill Simmons. You can listen to audio of the interview at ESPN.com.

Here's a recap of what CM Punk said about:

Why he returned so soon:

It would be cool to stay off television for a while but SummerSlam is now and he wanted to capitalize on the momentum of the angle. He enjoys working with John Cena and likes their feud. He still loves what he does.

Wrestlers boring him:

He grew very bored of pro wrestling and still is at times. Certain guys on the roster who do the same thing day in and day out and that's not him. He questions everything and tries new things - and whatever he's doing right now is working.

His epic shoot promo on RAW several weeks ago:

He knew WWE would cut him off at some point - but he wanted to push the envelope as much as he could. It was not scripted - everything he said was from the heart. He understood certain things are off limits - and he did go too far with a few of his comments.

Whether he was really leaving WWE:

His mind was made up to leave WWE. He made the decision to stay in WWE the day of the Money in the Bank pay-per-view. He wasn't playing games or trying to get more money from WWE - he was very burnt out and spent a lot of time weighing his options.

His new theme song "Cut of Personality":

He's a big advocate of wrestlers changing their characters - their look, their music, etc. It was time to change. It probably cost WWE a lot of money to license the song and he's worth it.

Also this was the scheduled plan for Punk but as you know WWE likes to change up at last minute:
NoDQ.com > WWE > Original plan for CM Punk: Laid out by HHH
Posted by Roscoe De Soto on 07/27/2011 at 07:44 PM

Credit: F4WOnline.com

According to Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, there were six different scripts written for this past Monday's RAW.

The main goal for the entire CM Punk storyline was not so much for him to get over, but rather to get over Triple H taking over Vince McMahon's position.

The original plan for CM Punk's return was as follows: Get attacked by HHH, laid out with the pedigree, and then Alberto Del Rio would cash in his Money in the Bank leading to Del Rio vs. John Cena at Summerslam. The idea was that HHH would become a major heel as a result and feud with a babyface Punk. Plans ending up changing, and as Meltzer noted, Punk's elevation wasn't "shut down."

Also this was the scheduled plan for Punk but as you know WWE likes to change up at last minute:

That original plan is one of the dumbest things I've read in relation to a planned storyline in awhile. They can still have Punk and HHH feud but that proposed plan would cut Punk's legs out plus it's too close to how his first title reign ended.

That original plan is one of the dumbest things I've read in relation to a planned storyline in awhile. They can still have Punk and HHH feud but that proposed plan would cut Punk's legs out plus it's too close to how his first title reign ended.

So basically the original plan was for HHH to squash Punk & his momentum:smh:

Yeah THQ is getting very lazy plus they are the kings of hyping up games that lose more and more cred when they start releasing videos. Fire Pro Wrestling was a great game and it looked like an snes game, but the matches and depth made up for that whereas SVR is all polish but very little substance. SVR 2011 had 2 good things and that was weapons were more interactive and ministry taker.

Yeah, I play that...great career mode and I love how you can do whatever during the entrance and end of the matches.

I was really hoping the revamping would include them going to real time physics. Since they were going for this whole rebuildig stage supposedly.
