I cut all my hair off a few months back, "again". I'm not perming anymore. I'm still hot combing though. The thing about locs with me is that it's just so permanent. lol. I do like variety. I do like to play dress up is what i call it. I do like wearing a chinese bang look sometimes. Sometimes i like going short. I like the loc look sometimes. Just not sure about making that kind of commitment for years and years and years. To my hair like that.

Urrrrgh! Torn!
 
I'm still playing with products, with the washing, conditioning, and what not. I haven't twisted my hair in a couple of days and it's still holding out. It's not growing like it was a couple of years ago but I think we are on the right track.

Here's something I tried a few weeks ago with bantu knots :

Oh that's beautiful Melon! My hair never works in a bantu knot out.
It just flops! I love the volume you got there.

LI I won't loc again. I like the way they look, but I did feel I lost some versatility. Plus I like the way my unloced hair feels way better.

They are beautiful though. I saw a lady with some gorgeous locs to her butt a few days ago.

I was wearing braids, took them out recently to let my hair "air out," but I am about to take a Caribbean vacation for about a week and a half. I'm all natural, but mostly wear it either straightened or in braids. I'm looking for a style with more versatility for my trip, specifically because I'm also in a wedding in one of the islands I'm going to...

Any recommendations would be helpful :D

What about crochet braids? They are loose at the ends so you can wear out styles or up styles. Your hair is just cornrowed underneath and the braid hair is looped through the cornrow. I wore them a lot when I first transitioned many years ago. Very versatile. I would just let my hair be and wear it in an updo, but if you like it straightened I'd be concerned the humidity would poof it out. I did wear straightened hair to a wedding a few years ago and it was fine but it was earlier in the spring and not summer humid.

Hmm, I'll have to google crochet braids to see some styles. I dare not wear my hair down during all the wedding festivities and fun...even in "normal" heat, it poofs up when straightened, so I can hardly imagine...

My hair won't hold a curl but since Moms made the knots so tight, (I wore it knotted for a week before I took them out), the curls lasted for maybe two, two and half days. If you got a remedy to hold a curl I am all ears.

But your reason for no locs is why I haven't started mine...sometimes it seems like a good idea, but sometimes...eh

You not the only one. I got a wedding this Sunday and I have no idea what I'm doing with my head.

I wish I had something to tell you but when in doubt I'm sticking with my two strand. If I can't think of something to do before Saturday night, I'm twisting that night, and I'll take it a loose Sunday brush it back a bit, pin it and stick a flower in my hair.

I am so uncreative. :smh:

It really depends. It's a combination of wetness and product.
Some people do better defining their natural curl pattern on soaking wet or damp or dryish hair. That's trial and error. I do best with wet/damp hair.

However, if it's a more manipulated curl like a rod set, wet set, knots etc then having a good leave in to keep it from getting dry and frizzy layered with a good styling foam or good old fashioned setting lotion like Lottabody will give you some hold for a long time (especially if you sit under a dryer instead of air dry. The dryer cuts down on frizz a lot!).

Knot outs are just too unpredictable for me so I mainly do them to dry my hair. I set my natural curl pattern best with just a few braids to dry. That lasts until my wash for the most part. If it gets frizzy I just braid it again. If I do a wet set with curlformers or rods I use SET by Hairplay as a styling foam, but Lottabody works great too if you get the dilution right (it's a little trickier for natural hair vs. relaxed hair). If I don't use some kind of setting lotion it will not stay very long.

Interesting...I've never tried doing anything to it wet because it dries so fast before I can do anything to it.

Foam...I keep seeing this Argon Oil by Cream of Nature that I want to try but I don't know it's purpose...

Do you like your curlformers? I was planning to get some for this shindig I got this weekend but I'm not sure if I can get to it.

I'm real hypocritical when it comes to hair actually. What i do with mine i tell other people not to do with theirs. I was just telling someone this the other day.

I'm very do as i say not as i do.

Jo i suggest you try the crochet braids, Mircorings, Microknots, sengalese twists are coming into style now too.

Or you could just plait it up and rock a plaited style. Plaiting is cheap, and lasts you for the duration of your trip. I just did a head tuesday...

No problem Mel. I have a love hate relationship with my Curlformers. Here's why I love them- they do the best to the root smooth set. I can't tell you how many people think I pressed my hair and then rod set because it is so smooth looking (even if I don't sit under the dryer). I was never very good at get the roots smooth with a regular rod set. Curlformers make it easy! They are also not too terrible to sleep it but I avoid it.

Why I :angry: them- I hate having to pull my hair through the curler with that wack tool they include. If you don't do it right the hair gets tangled very easily. I picked up a good tip to pull up and not down and that helped a lot.

Also, if you are impatient forget it, because it can take a while to do a whole head although that's pretty standard with roller sets. I'm lazy so I usually just do the front and middle and plan to pin up the rest. They are also expensive for rollers.

Having said that I would buy them again. They are very useful once you get the hang of it. :)

hey need help. My wife went from having thick natural hair to on her way to bald and thinning, my guest maybe its the birth control pills or what not, but if any one got tips on helping that problem i would be very grateful.....or a good wig supplier...seriously!

gonna BM this and check out later. daughter is 12 and mom gets her hair fixed about 1 time each month starting 2-3 years ago. hair use to be down mid back around age 8 or so. until now it's prolly not even past her neck..:smh:

Stop that NOW. I didn't get my perm until about 12 but that was cause moms was going through hand problems (she hurt veins when she was younger).

She can see natural stylists and there's a lot of uncomplicated stuff she can do at home without braids. If you do find a braider just make sure they don't pull the baby hairs in front thats where these chicks start looking like they hairline receding.
