Seeking New Life, New York Blacks Heed South’s Tug

In Deborah Brown’s family lore, the American South was a place of whites-only water fountains and lynchings under cover of darkness. It was a place that black people like her mother had fled.

But for Ms. Brown, 59, a retired civil servant from Queens, the South now promises salvation.

Three generations of her family — 10 people in all — are moving to Atlanta from New York, seeking to start fresh economically and, in some sense, to reconnect with a bittersweet past. They include Ms. Brown, her 82-year-old mother and her 26-year-old son, who has already landed a job and settled there.

“I feel a strong spiritual pull to go back to the South,” Ms. Brown said...

You can do more with 50k here than you can with 75k in New York. Thats why the pay is so different. But if you cant manage money then you gonna be fucked no matter where you live

I did it.
I went from Brooklyn to Maryland.....
Best move I ever made.

The CAC's and foreigners can have NY as far as I'm concerned.

I have friends in New Orleans and the DC/Virginia areas that have been sweating me for the longest.
Love those parts.
But the heat, especially in N.O. is KILLING!!!
I spent a week down there last August and it was 120 FUCKIN' DEGREES!!!
And don't get me started on those flying cockroaches.
I ain't down with that shit.

I've been trying to go back to the Pacific Northwest to no avail (job transfer didn't work out).

Sounds about right.

Last time I was in Atlanta, I couldn't positively identify the ATLiens from the massive collections of people hailing from NY/NJ/PA. If they can find a better life down south more power to em.

the question is are they going to VOTE

hell with all this movement from Black and Latinos

Mississippi, Georgia, and North Carolina should be easy democratic electoral votes

Been happening for years. That said,in the end it is going to be a mistake.Once black folks move out black folks lose clout.Without voting numbers we won't have much of a voice. In the near future I see white people primarily in the big inner cities and black folks in the suburbs and southern cities.

Odd that the newspapers keep posting this shit. Its like they trying to let all the white people know "its ok to move back to the city the nuckas are moving out."

I used to say "niggas who fail in Cali move down south".
Eventually it will have to be rewritten to: "niggas who fail up north, move down south."

This is one of the reasons I'm trying my hardest to invest in a multi unit property out here in Houston. It's not just black folks that are migrating to the south...

While I don't particularly care for New York you can't just up and leave. Blacks built too much rich culture up there and a mass exodus from yet another major U.S. city will do nothing but hurt the political clout of African Americans. You niggas failed in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and now New York. 20 years from now we'll be reading how Blacks are trying to migrate to Mexico because the bumfuck southern back woods are too expensive.

nothing wrong with the South been to a few cities...its cool down there....but I can't see myself living there right now...

I leave NYC for a few weeks & I'm already missing shit...

That's why my fam brought property downtown in the city. THE LOFT IS READY. NIGGAS NEED TO GET THE FUCK OUR NOW. GENTRIFICATION IS GREAT MOVE.

Why do you chalk it up to "failure"?

I don't know why... although the cost of living is cheaper ain't no fuckin jobs down there... I remember the mass exodus from the Northeast to ATL... niggas was packing up and moving out with no job prospects lined up or nothing. Niggas going down there blinded hoping shit turns out right. Many of them had to end up moving back fuckin idiots

You couldn't walk the streets of NY you bitch ass nigga. Keep ya shit talkin moist ass on the west coast in San Fran... you co sign faggits and live among them.

I keep seeing these articles and I am starting to think that they are just trying to encourage black people to leave the city. "look at all the great things you can do down in atl... Spiritually the south is calling!". I don't like where this is heading

fixed... I don't plan on moving down south until I'm an old man looking to buy a crib in miami. get chubby, go fishing and watch the young women in bikini's

Same shit happened in San Francisco in the 90s. Blacks leaving claimed "they" were forcing them out. When in fact it was a simple case of Blacks not adapting and updating their skill sets. Silicon Valley was erupting and Blacks failed to ride that wave, still looking for blue collar work like it was the 70s.

Obama's doing a great job getting illegals out of the country but the damage is already done. Companies will give what's left of blue collar labor to wetbacks since they know they will put up with the abuse, so where does that leave Blacks, a group of people collectively don't place an emphasis on serious education? Did you know only 6% of all engineering graduates yearly are African American?

Having been on the West Coast for a few months... I can't font... I like this shit out here... Southern Cali... that is... San Fran... :smh: I'm sorry... that shit is just TOO DIRTY for me... Oakland... The jury is still out... I didn't get to see Oakland how I wanted to... San Jose... It's cool... Palo Alto is OK... East Palo Alto is a kind of HOOD... But San Fran... Thumbs Down... Don't get me wrong... There's some nice spots... BUT They seemed to be only a few. I'll take SoCal ANYDAY...

Doesn't surprise me, but I take it you regard all liberal arts/non-science or math degrees as worthless?

might u be exaggerating a bit here?

Nah Bruh.
I wish I were.
But it was mid-August when I went last year.
And it was stifling to say the least.
Daytime temps were between 115 & 120 the days I was there.

Getting cack to NYC/LaGuardia to 95 Degrees that week was a fuckin' revelation after that trip.
