I understand that. But my question is, Ron received one first place vote and 8 second place votes. Yet, everyone on the second team (except Tayshaun) received higher first and second place votes than Ron. So why is he on the first team, and not Duncan. It must be some type of error. Casue you get two points for first team.
i.e. - Bowen - 26 first place votes equals 52 points, plus the 2 second place votes, which count as 1 point, gives him a total of 54. But Ron got 1 fist place vote which equals 2 points, plus the 8 second place votes which gives him a total of 10. Unless, its supposed to be 11 first place (22 points), 22 + 8 = 30. Thats the only thing i can think of. Yeah, its must be a typo.

On another note... @ the All NBA Defensive 1st team. It looks like the 2nd team is more defense oriented than the first.
Also, the Memphis Grizzlies were the #1 team in defense in the NBA. Anyone find it odd no one of the team made it? Let alone get heavy consideration
Or the fact that Pistons' players take up 30% of the slots?
SpiritualPorn said:Cran.... how is one to look at defense in the NBA besides the usual blocked shots and steals? A player cannot really "shut a man down", so what constitutes great defense in the NBA from a ballers perspective?

you'll get different answers from alot of people.
box score readers look to blocked shots and steals. i'll pass.
scorers say the toughest defenders are the ones that take away SOME aspects of their game (force the scorer to the middle where help is, take away baseline, sit on their strong hand)
coaches tend to look at it from a position standpoint. on-ball defender like lindsey hunter, defensive rebounder like ben wallace, post defender like elton brand... who can disrupt the half court set the opposing team is trying to run?
my personal viewpoint is one of who makes the other player MISERABLE? who has their man HATING to be defended? who, using LEGAL tactics (not jersey holding, grabbing or flopping) has gotten into the other man's head and taken him out of the game? i LOVE on ball defenders who play chest to chest defense, making the player uncomfortable because you're CONSTANTLY invading his personal space.
i am less inclined to reward floaters (think free safeties) like earvin johnson and tobe, who gather steals created by their teammates, and overplay passing lanes because they rarely have tough defensive assignments...

credibility this list might have had in my opinion
cranrab said:definitely a valid viewpoint.
here is something coach phil jackson had to say:
"[t]obe's defense, to be accurate, has faltered in recent years, despite his presence on the league's all-defensive team. the voters have been seduced by his remarkable athleticism and spectacular steals, but he hasn't played sound, fundamental defense. mesmerized by the ball, he's gambled too frequently, putting us out of position, forcing rotations that leave a man wide open, and doesn't keep his feet on the ground."
