Tea Party Nation Asks Business Owners to STOP Hiring

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- A national Tea Party group wants business owners to stop hiring! That's right. Tea Party Nation posted a pledge online Tuesday asking small business owners to stop creating jobs and sink our economy even further as a protest.

The organization says President Obama and the Senate want to destroy the country's economy so they can remake the U.S. into a socialist country. The irony is that halting job creation would destroy our economy.

Tea Party Nation's call says, in part:

"I, an American small business owner, part of the class that produces the vast majority of real, wealth producing jobs in this country, hereby resolve that I will not hire a single person until this war against business and my country is stopped.I hereby declare that my job creation potential is now ceased.

I'm on strike!'"

Tea Party Nation is one of the two major tea party organizations, and the group had Sarah Palin as their keynote speaker at their convention this year. The group also boasts at least six smaller groups around the Bay Area, but some of them told 10 News they want nothing to do with this strike against job creation.

Judson Phillips, founder of Tea Party Nation, has taken to national TV and rallies across the country to spread the Tea Party's message.

At a rally in Wisconsin several weeks ago, Phillips told the crowd, "You know what? I like the rich. I like the rich so much I want everybody to be rich, whereas socialism, their idea, wants everybody to be poor."

However, Judson himself could be sending people to the poor house with the plan from Tea Party Nation calling for business owners to stop hiring in protest of President Obama and the Senate.

Kristina Gionet, co-organizer of local Tea Party group, Pinellas Patriots, doesn't like Democrats' handling of the economy either. Still, Gionet says this strike from the Tea Party Nation just goes way too far. "For a conservative group to send out a call to ask those businesses, who are in a position to, to not hire people I think is against the American way."

Gionet also told us it's "unfortunate" this group shares the Tea Party affiliation with the Pinellas Patriots. "The website says 'Tea Party' doesn't it? ...and the initiative is right there," she pointed out. "But this particular group that has called for this initiative does not have central command, if you will, of the Tea Party network."

The Tampa 912 Project, another local Tea Party group, also told 10 News they do not support this call to stop job creation. Karen Jaroch, organizer of Tampa 912, says they're not even affiliated with the Tea Party Nation even though the group lists Tampa 912 as a local affiliate.

No one from Tea Party Nation responded to requests from 10 News for comment.

Fox Attacks Facebook Jobs Initiative After Tea Party Started Pressuring Businesses Not To Hire

Two days ago, as Right-Wing Watch reported, leading tea party group Tea Party Nation sent a message to its members calling "for a strike of American small businesses against the movement for global socialism." Activist Melissa Brookstone wrote:

I, an American small business owner, part of the class that produces the vast majority of real, wealth producing jobs in this country, hereby resolve that I will not hire a single person until this war against business and my country is stopped.

I hereby declare that my job creation potential is now ceased.

"I'm on strike!"

On the heels of this initiative to pressure companies not to hire employees, Fox is complaining about a company trying to help unemployed Americans find jobs:

Fox linked to a report by The Hill that referred to a partnership Facebook has struck with the Obama administration to offer employment resources to Americans:

[Labor Secretary Hilda] Solis said the goal of the partnership is to connect employers with people looking for employment. The initiative will allow the Labor Department to provide information and resources to the millions of users on Facebook, Solis said.

[...]

As part of the partnership, Facebook created a "Social Jobs Partnership" page to provide job information and resources to users. "Think of this as a free online job fair that can be accessed seven days a week, day or night," said Marne Levine, Facebook's vice president of global public policy.

The page will offer Labor Department resources, including job listings and job search services, along with resources from partnering nonprofits.

Facebook will target public announcements to users in the 10 states with the highest unemployment rates and Puerto Rico. The announcements will include information about job resources available in the users' area.

Levine also said Facebook plans to invest in developing new social technologies to help people find jobs.

Fox later changed its headline to read: "Facebook and Obama Join Forces Again."

As we've noted, and as Fox News' own Bob Beckel pointed out yesterday, Fox News relentlessly promoted the tea party movement in 2009.

I never said this group was "competent", however, it is incompetent to not hire people who could increase the potential profits of a company. Capitalize on the incompetence of others, that's all I'm sayin.

It should also make others recognize that we desperately need the "free" market to address these imbalances. All these protesters could form a company to compete against those who are obviously allowing their emotions to dictate their business practices. In a free society, the best and brightest ideas should be allowed to prosper.

Unless there is a belief the protesters are not smart enough to compete.

Is it even possible for 1% of the population to control all the wealth in a free market economy how could that happen or would small business owners even consider not hiring workers for political reasons.

Bill Looman, Georgia Business Owner, Draws Fire For 'Not Hiring Until Obama Is Gone'

WACO, Ga. (AP) -- A west Georgia business owner has been deluged with calls and emails after posting signs on his company's trucks that say he's not hiring anyone until President Barack Obama leaves office.

Waco-based U.S. Cranes LLC owner Bill Looman tells WXIA-TV that reaction has been so intense he's had to disconnect his phones and temporarily shut down the company's website.

He posted the signs on his company's trucks for other motorists to see on roads and interstates across the South. The signs proclaim "New Company Policy: We are not hiring until Obama is gone."

Looman says he's not refusing to hire employees to make a political point. He told WXIA he can't afford to hire anyone because of the economy, and he blames the people in power.

$5 Gas: Why GOP Wants You to Pay Rising Prices at the Pump

At $3.72, gas prices have been steadily on the rise since December with no sign of slowing down. Economists worry that gas could reach $5 a gallon this summer, posing a threat to consumer spending, curtailing the progress of the U.S. economy and--to the GOP's delight--causing a potentially disastrous impact on President Barack Obama's re-election campaign.

As consumers worry over rising gas prices, Republican primary candidates have been quick to point an accusatory finger at Obama, citing his hesitation to drill domestically and his rejection of the Keystone Oil Pipeline. The White House, on the other hand, has historically supported research for alternative energy sources and conservation as long-term solutions. Despite claims from both Obama and the GOP, economists say the president has little to no impact on the rising gas prices.

GOP presidential hopefuls insist, however, that in the face of rising prices Obama is failing the nation and hurting the economy.

"The American people want to see [that] the president's trying to do something about it and [that] he's not just sending money outside the country to the tune of hundreds of billions of dollars, in many cases to the people who don't like us very much," Mitt Romney said at a rally at Western Michigan University. The former Massachusetts governor pledged to "finally get our oil and our gas out of the ground."

Similarly, GOP presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich has offered his own strategy, "Drill Here, Drill Now," calling Obama "outrageously anti American-energy."

"I've developed a program for American energy so no future president will ever bow to a Saudi king again, and so every American can look forward to $2.50-a-gallon gasoline," former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said in the GOP debate in Mesa, Ariz. The former Speaker of the House has spoken openly in support for more domestic drilling.

GOP candidate Rick Santorum has also offered his perspective as gas creeps towards $4 a gallon. He claims the president is purposely trying to keep oil prices high in an effort to promote global warming awareness and future research for alternative energy sources.

"The president of the United States, when he ran for office, talked about--talked about how he could [raise] prices for gasoline," Santorum said in a speech in Phoenix, Ariz. "Why? Well, because he was concerned about global warming."

"They needed to reduce CO2 emissions," Santorum said. "Which means you need to drive less. And the only way we could force Americans to drive less was to make it expensive for you to drive...and here we have now a systematic plan in place by this president to, number one, reduce the drilling of oil and gas in this country."

Despite the many claims from the GOP candidates, economists seem to agree that gas prices are often out of the president's control. Experts attribute the rising price of petroleum to tensions in Iran, growing demand as the Chinese and Indian economies boom, and higher demand for oil in the U.S. as the American economy continues to recover. Gas prices have also significantly increased around the world, with the price of oil reaching $8 and $9 per gallon in many European countries.

Nonetheless, rising gas prices could still play a major role in the presidential election. A recent Associated Press-GfK poll indicates that, while Obama's approval rating has significantly improved, Americans remain highly concerned about oil prices.

Seven in ten respondents in the poll said gas prices are "deeply important" and nearly 39 percent view gas prices as an "extremely important" issue. While the improving economy has helped Obama's approval rating rise to 48 percent, only 39 percent of respondents approved of Obama's handling of gas prices and 58 percent disapproved.

"Whether it's fair or not, the American motoring public has always tended to blame the guy in the White House for high gas prices," CNN's Jack Cafferty said on "The Situation Room," claiming American's will look to the president regardless of the cause.

The Obama administration, unsurprisingly, has been quick to respond to the GOP attacks.

"Only in politics do people root for bad news, do they greet bad news so enthusiastically," Obama said of Republicans in a speech at the University of Miami. "You pay more; they're licking their chops."

"And you can bet that since it's an election year," he continued, "they're already dusting off their three-point plans for $2 gas. I'll save you the suspense. Step one is drill, step two is drill, and step three is keep drilling...We've heard the same thing for 30 years. Well, the American people aren't stupid. You know that's not a plan... It's a strategy to get politicians through an election."

The president said there are no short-term answers and that domestic drilling is a dishonest solution to rising prices.

"There are no quick fixes to this problem," Obama continued, "and you know we can't just drill our way to lower gas prices."

While domestic drilling has soared under the Obama administration, the president has primarily been a staunch supporter of developing new energy sources in an effort to limit America's dependence on foreign oil. The U.S. continues to import about half of its petroleum needs, which leads to increased prices at the pump when international disputes occur.

In addition to promoting research for alternative energy sources, the president has also made an effort to decrease Americans' dependence on foreign oil by promoting fuel efficiency regulations in the U.S. A fuel efficiency standards agreement reached last summer will require cars to average 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025. The Obama administration estimates the standards will save 12 billion barrels of oil.

Despite his efforts, rising gas prices still pose a serious threat to Obama's re-election campaign. Economists expect gas prices to rise to $4.25 by Memorial Day, potentially reaching $5 by the summer. It will be hard for voters to ignore the rising prices through the summer months when the demand for oil often increases as Americans travel for vacation.

"Republicans will hit him with anything that comes up which makes him look bad," American University political science professor James Thurber told Time magazine. Thurber does not believe, however, that Obama will be hurt by the attacks "unless gas goes over $5 a gallon."

If push comes to shove, Obama could always opt this summer to release oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve as he did during the Libyan conflict in the summer of 2011. The emergency reserve is kept in Texas and Louisiana, containing approximately 700 million barrels of oil, which can be refined on average to yield 42 gallons per barrel.

While most economists believe releasing oil from the reserves has a limited and fleeting impact, White House spokesman Jay Carney told Time magazine, "We never take options off the table."

Gingrich Bets Big Oil Will ‘Crater The Economy’ To Defeat Obama

Appearing on CNN, Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich bet that oil companies will ruin the economy, getting President Obama out of office. Asked by Candy Crowley why he is so confident of a Republican landslide in the November elections, Gingrich predicted that gasoline prices — already on a rapid rise to the massive benefit of the oil industry — will continue to skyrocket, leading to an economic collapse by August:
The price of gasoline is becoming a genuine crisis for many American families. If it continues to go higher, it will crater the economy by August. Because people will have no discretionary income and as a result, the president’s going to go into the fall with very expensive gasoline, a weakening economy, a disastrously bad policy in the Middle East and a trillion dollar deficit. I think that’s a pretty big burden while he’s waging war on the Catholic Church and apologizing to Islamic extremists. I think that’s a pretty heavy burden for the President of the United States to carry for re-election.
Watch it:

Gasoline prices are rising much faster than oil prices are, because of decisions made by oil companies to increase their profits even as US demand declines. Americans have been shifting to much more fuel-efficient cars from a resurgent American auto industry.

But the oil industry has been shutting down oil refineries, reducing production, and exporting gasoline, putting the squeeze on gasoline prices to ensure continued record profits. Further refinery shutdowns are planned, guaranteeing further gas price spikes in the future. Rampant speculator activity accelerates the flow of wealth from drivers’ pockets at the gas pump to the one percent.

When gas prices go up, Big Oil wins and everyone else loses — except, Newt Gingrich bets, the Republican Party. It would take a conspiracy theorist like Rick Santorum to believe that the oil and Wall Street executives would deliberately hurt the U.S. economy to help Republicans win. But there’s little evidence that given the choice between their own short-term profits and the welfare of the 99 percent, Big Oil would make any sacrifice.

Transcript:

CROWLEY: What brings you the kind of optimism that makes you predict a landslide victory for Republicans?

GINGRICH: Well, we lived through this in 1980 and in the end issues matter, and reality matters. The fact is that Ronald Reagan didn’t pull ahead of Jimmy Carter until September. When he did pull ahead of them he ultimately carried more states than Franklin Roosevelt carried against Hoover in 1932. And the reason is people take stock. Republicans blocking highway bill for 'political reasons,' says Reid

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) on Monday accused Republicans of trying to kill the pending highway funding bill for political gain.

"Republican leaders have wasted almost a month of the Senate's time obstructing this valuable measure for political reasons, obviously," said Reid in his opening volley from the Senate floor on Monday.

The highway bill has been pending in the Senate since Feb. 7, when it cleared its first procedural hurdle with a strong 85-11 vote. Since then, however, disagreements about which amendments will see votes and over tax hikes included in the bill have prevented further progress.

Reid repeated on Monday that the bill would create 3 million jobs and said Republicans ought to get out of its way.

"If they ended the filibuster and we passed the bill before us it would be a huge step forward," he said.

Reid ended his speech, however, suggesting that he expects the filibuster will continue.

"In today's political climate, bipartisan support isn’t enough to keep good legislation alive," he said. "In today's political climate, 85 votes to begin debate on a measure isn't enough to guarantee the measure will become law."

Robert Draper Book: GOP's Anti-Obama Campaign Started Night Of Inauguration

WASHINGTON -- As President Barack Obama was celebrating his inauguration at various balls, top Republican lawmakers and strategists were conjuring up ways to submarine his presidency at a private dinner in Washington.

The event -- which provides a telling revelation for how quickly the post-election climate soured -- serves as the prologue of Robert Draper's much-discussed and heavily-reported new book, "Do Not Ask What Good We Do: Inside the U.S. House of Representatives."

According to Draper, the guest list that night (which was just over 15 people in total) included Republican Reps. Eric Cantor (Va.), Kevin McCarthy (Calif.), Paul Ryan (Wis.), Pete Sessions (Texas), Jeb Hensarling (Texas), Pete Hoekstra (Mich.) and Dan Lungren (Calif.), along with Republican Sens. Jim DeMint (S.C.), Jon Kyl (Ariz.), Tom Coburn (Okla.), John Ensign (Nev.) and Bob Corker (Tenn.). The non-lawmakers present included Newt Gingrich, several years removed from his presidential campaign, and Frank Luntz, the long-time Republican wordsmith. Notably absent were Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) -- who, Draper writes, had an acrimonious relationship with Luntz.

For several hours in the Caucus Room (a high-end D.C. establishment), the book says they plotted out ways to not just win back political power, but to also put the brakes on Obama's legislative platform.

"If you act like you're the minority, you're going to stay in the minority," Draper quotes McCarthy as saying. "We've gotta challenge them on every single bill and challenge them on every single campaign."

The conversation got only more specific from there, Draper reports. Kyl suggested going after incoming Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner for failing to pay Social Security and Medicare taxes while at the International Monetary Fund. Gingrich noted that House Ways and Means Chairman Charlie Rangel (D-N.Y.) had a similar tax problem. McCarthy chimed in to declare "there's a web" before arguing that Republicans could put pressure on any Democrat who accepted campaign money from Rangel to give it back.

The dinner lasted nearly four hours. They parted company almost giddily. The Republicans had agreed on a way forward:

Go after Geithner. (And indeed Kyl did, the next day: ‘Would you answer my question rather than dancing around it—please?’)

Show united and unyielding opposition to the president’s economic policies. (Eight days later, Minority Whip Cantor would hold the House Republicans to a unanimous No against Obama’s economic stimulus plan.)

Begin attacking vulnerable Democrats on the airwaves. (The first National Republican Congressional Committee attack ads would run in less than two months.)

Win the spear point of the House in 2010. Jab Obama relentlessly in 2011. Win the White House and the Senate in 2012.

"You will remember this day," Draper reports Newt Gingrich as saying on the way out. "You’ll remember this as the day the seeds of 2012 were sown."

Draper's timeline is correct. On Jan. 21, 2009, Kyl aggressively questioned Geithner during his confirmation hearings. On Jan. 28, 2009, House GOP leadership held the line against the stimulus package (Senate GOP leadership would prove less successful in stopping defections).

The votes, of course, can be attributed to legitimate philosophical objection to the idea of stimulus spending as well as sincere concern that the secretary of the Treasury should personally have a clean tax-paying record. But what Draper's book makes clear is that blunt electoral-minded ambitions were the animating force.

Whether or not that's shocking depends on the degree to which one's view of politics has been jaded. What's certainly noteworthy is the timing. When Mitch McConnell said in October 2010 that his party's primary goal in the next Congress was to make Obama a one-term president, it was treated as remarkably candid and deeply cynical. Had he said it publicly in January 2009, it would likely have caused an uproar.

By extension, however, the Draper anecdote also negatively reflects on the Obama administration for failing to appreciate how quickly congressional Republicans would oppose the president's agenda.

I thought this comment by former ABC reporter Sam Donaldson interesting (regarding Neil Munro's interruption of President Barack Obama's remarks on changes in immigration policy on June 16, 2012):

"What this man did yesterday is something new, to me wrong and unusual. I think it is probably the result of the growing incivility of the times, the competition among reporters and news organizations to be noticed not only for the work product but for the theatrics of the gathering . . . and there is one more factor, let’s face it: Many on the political right believe this president ought not to be there – they oppose him not for his polices and political view but for who he is, an African American! These people and perhaps even certain news organizations (certainly the right wing talkers like Limbaugh) encourage disrespect for this president. That is both regrettable and adds, in this case, to the general dislike of the press on the part of the general public.

Some of you cats just don't understand how an economy grows!

John Smith started the day early, having set his alarm clock (MADE IN JAPAN) for 6 am. While his coffeepot (MADE IN CHINA) was perking, he shaved with his electric razor (MADE IN HONG KONG),and put on a dress shirt (MADE IN SRI LANKA), designer jeans (MADE IN SINGAPORE) and tennis shoes (MADE IN KOREA). After cooking his breakfast in his newelectric skillet (MADE IN INDIA), he sat down with his calculator (MADE IN MEXICO),to see how much he could spend today. After setting his watch (MADE IN TAIWAN) to the radio (MADE IN INDIA),he got in his car (MADE IN JAPAN),filled it with GAS (from SAUDIA ARABIA)to continued his search for a good paying AMERICAN JOB. At the end of yet another discouraging and fruitless day checking his Computer (made In MALAYSIA), John decided to relax for a while. He put on his sandals (MADE IN BRAZIL), poured himself a glass of wine (MADE IN FRANCE)and turned on his TV (MADE IN INDONESIA), and then wondered why he can't find a good paying job in AMERICA.

GOP To Make 31st Attempt To Repeal Obamacare Act

The House Rules Committee takes up a bill Monday called the "Repeal of Obamacare Act." And just like it says, the bill would wipe away the president's Affordable Care Act. A vote of the full House is planned for Wednesday.

It's the first legislative response from House Republicans after the Supreme Court upheld the law. But it is far from the first time the GOP has voted for repeal.

Over the past 18 months, the House has taken 30 floor votes to try to repeal, defund or dismantle the health care law. The first attempt came on Jan. 19, 2011 just two weeks after the GOP took control of the House.

On that day, Rep. Mike Pence,R-Ind., had this to say, "And today, House Republicans are going to stand with the American people and vote to repeal their government takeover of health care lock stock and barrel."

And that's exactly what House Republicans did, all 242 of them. They were joined by just three Democrats. But the measure languished in the Democratic-controlled Senate.

"Even in some bizarre universe where the Senate passed it, President Obama wouldn't sign it into law," says Sara Binder, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution and an expert in legislative gridlock.

But the House's efforts haven't been necessarily pointless. Binder says votes like the one planned for later this week are all about scoring political points.

"Much of what we see during split party control of Congress, is this message politics, which is the parties taking their chamber and using it to pursue a policy agenda that appeals to their party base," Binder says.

"I think we can agree that this is a vote that the American public has called for and a vote that we owe the American public," said Rep. Rodney Alexander, R-La., speaking in favor of his effort back in April of 2011 to pull funding from the health care law.

It passed the House on an almost purely partisan vote with criticism from Democrats like Connecticut Rep. Rosa DeLauro, "Mr. Speaker instead of working to create jobs, reduce the deficit and do the business of the American people, this majority has been consumed for months now with trying to repeal health care reform."

The measure failed in the Senate. Defunding and repeal efforts large and small have been tucked into everything from defense appropriations to student loans. A handful of smaller items have made it all the way through to a presidential signature. But most have failed or stalled in the Senate.

So, why try again? Why a 31st vote for repeal?

"We want to show people we are resolved to get rid of this," said House Speaker John Boehner, who appeared on CBS's Face the Nation on July 1.

Boehner said the law needs to be ripped out by its roots, and then replaced.

"And while the court upheld it as constitutional," Boehner added, "they certainly didn't say it was a good law."

The only real chance for Boehner and his Republican colleagues to get their way lies with the November election, and possibly an arcane budget procedure known as reconciliation.

For that to work, Mitt Romney would have to win the presidency, Republicans would have to maintain control of the House and win the Senate. When it comes to the Senate, it's virtually impossible for Republicans to get the 60 vote majority needed to overcome a filibuster. And that's where reconciliation comes in. Certain budget bills can go around the filibuster and only need 51 votes to pass.

But Sarah Binder at Brookings says the process would be procedurally challenging.

"It's complicated for Republicans to achieve this, but there is a vehicle if they can carefully calibrate their bill," she says.

That's a whole lot of ifs. And there are questions about if even that could repeal the whole law.

One thing that's not in question, though, is the outcome of Wednesday's expected vote on the Repeal Obamacare Act. Like so many similar efforts in the past, it will pass the House, with overwhelming Republican support.
