Best Sandwiches In Philly

the write-ups are from Glen Macnow of 610 WIP. I have tried these spots and I have to agree they are some of the best in the city.
To see more great sandwich spots checkout his blog at:
http://610wip.cbslocal.com/2010/05/19/glen-macnow’s-hot-specialty-sandwich-safari/

Meatball Sandwich
Pastaficio Homemade Pasta Co.
Packer Park Shopping Center, South Philadelphia. (215) 467-1111
This treasure of a little store turned up last year during our Italian Hoagie Hunt. They’re located right next to the amazing Chickie’s and Pete’s by the stadiums, and how they put together so many delicious items in that small a location is a wonder.
Everyday, Anthony, the owner, hand rolls meatballs of beef, veal, pork and different spices that he will not reveal. He spends the morning sautéing broccoli rob in garlic and hot pepper. Add some high-quality provolone and spoon it onto a roll from Abruzzi Bakery.
Unlike most meatball sandwiches these don’t have any gravy, no marinara, not a hint of tomato. Doesn’t need it. This is, without a doubt, the best meatball sandwich in the city. I’m telling you I could eat these meatballs like M&M’s.

Adirondack Sandwich
Ugly Moose
443 Shurs Lane, Manayunk. (215) 482-2739.
Sliced filet mignon – and when I said medium-rare they delivered as ordered – on a nice eggy roll with melted provolone, purple onion, tomato and a snappy peppercorn sauce. Tender and juicy, it’s Grade-A beef on this baby. Order it with a Kenzinger Beer and a stack of onion rings at this Manayunk haunt and you’ve got a well-balanced feast.
I know I’ve had this sandwich before. . . wait, it’s the old MVP from Cunningham’s Court in Conshohocken back in the day. Sure, the same folks now run the Ugly Moose. They’ve brought the same friendly atmosphere and solid pub menu to the Moose. A solid contending sandwich in the beef department.

The Schmitter, McNally’s Tavern
8634 Germantown Ave., Chestnut Hill (215) 247-9736
If you’ve only ever had the Schmitter at a Phils or Eagles game, you’re really missing out on this sandwich at its prime. For a real treat, head to the original McNally’s (if you can find it – there’s the tiniest of signs on the green door) and sample one of these fresh-grilled gems with a pint of Guinness while watching the Phils on the tube. Ahh, a perfect summer night.
The Schmitter is a heart attack on a Kaiser roll. It consists of three layers of cheese intermingled with fresh-sliced roast beer, grilled onions, Russian dressing, Jersey tomatoes and – ah, yes – fried Hatfield salami. The whole mélange is heated together on the grill, which means the flavors – sweet, smoky, salty – mingle in great in harmony. They also can be known to drip a lot, so ask for extra napkins.
Some have criticized the Schmitter as an excess, even an obscenity of unhealthy ingredients. Not me. And not the loyal fans who have been buying this classic for 45 years now.

INSIDE THE STUDIO with MARSHA AMBROSIUS

Warmdaddy's
1400 s. columbus blvd @ reed st
Philadelphia, PA

INSIDE THE STUDIO
intimate conversation with MARSHA AMBROSIUS
Sunday September 19th / 7pm-11pm / RSVP only

brought to you by
IT'S THE LIFE PRODUCTIONS
Stacey "Flygirrl" Wilson, Laiya St.Clair and Jamica "DJ Afrodjiak" El

It’s the Life Productions presents, Inside the Studio, a series of live format events bringing Philadelphia a different type of experience. It’s an intimate experience between you, the fan, and your favorite artist. Inside the Studio provides the setting for a beginning of an understanding of WHO an artist truly is and what the factors are that led them to excellence in their craft. Whether presenting deejays, producers, emcees, visual artists, musicians or any other discipline, Inside the Studio is proud to spotlight Philadelphia artists who are recognized for what they bring to their craft and how they have taken that craft a few steps further affording them recognition all around the world.

To guide this experience, Inside the Studio consists of resident deejay, DJ Afrodjiak, a well known selector on the Philly scene; and host, Laiya St. Clair, a Philadelphia radio and television personality who uses her passion for arts and culture to guide us through the layers of each artist. As an acquaintance of many of the artists featured on Inside the Studio, Laiya will lend a unique air of discussion rather than your typical interview as well as keep the vibe comfortable for the artist and engaging for the audience. And last but not least, Flygirrl is the executive producer, managing everything from the promotion to the visual artists, to managing the event itself.

Inside the Studio takes place at Warmdaddy's, a comfortable yet cool setting with ample free parking. To enhance the experience, Visual art tributed to our special guest will fill the background of the stage. Past artists have included Ambassador Tatyana Fazlalizadeh, Eric Jordan and many others. Comfort food, cocktails and good conversation with various talented Philly Legends and Legends in the making. Nothing more, nothing less. Keeping the vibe comfortable and engaging, there will also be a brief Audience Q&A.

With two successful sessions behind us (with Black Thought and with Freeway), our third session of the series focuses on one of the most miraculous voices of this generation, Marsha Ambrosius. She was born in England, but for her, life began in Philadelphia. It was in Philadelphia, that she and her good friend and music partner, Natalie Stewart made a name for themselves as the group, Floetry. It was through Philadelphia, that she began to write songs for Jill Scott, Bilal and others. It was through Philadelphia, that she began her creative relationship with Jazzy Jeff's production house, "A Touch Of Jazz". It was through Philadelphia that she worked with an icon named, Michael Jackson. It was by way of Philadelphia that led her to be nominated for six Grammy's.

Marsha sings with effortless grace and her songwriting induces emotions that move you in ways you never thought possible. Unlike our other artists, who have been featured, Marsha is not from Philly. But if Philly could speak, she would definitely claim her as one of her favorite cousins. Although her debut album, "Late Nights & Early Mornings" will be released October 26th, Marsha is already in an elite class of young artists who have been confirmed by legends such as Prince, Patti Labelle and Michael Jackson and the ONLY one to work with ALL three! What a journey and we will learn what it takes to surpass all expectations, while making it look effortless.

Join Its the Life Productions. as we go Inside the Studio with the "Voice" aka, Marsha Ambrosius, Sunday September 19th 2010.

FRIDAYS ON THE MOSHULU

Event Details
This is officially the biggest party Philadelphia has ever seen. We proudly invite you back this Friday for a steady series of Fridays for the next 3 weeks leading into Labor Day weekend. If you have a birthday coming up & want to celebrate on the Moshulu with us; please email Nupe894@aol.com.

Get your RSVPs in early so you have no worries when you arrive. RSVPs will get you reduced admission before 11:30pm this week in the General Admission line. If waiting in lines is not your thing; there is a VIP Line; however you will forfeit the RSVP price. Please arrive at or after 10pm as we cannot allow anyone on the boat before then.

The Moshulu provides you with scenic views of Downtown Philadelphia & Camden as well as the Delaware River & Ben Franklin bridge. No city in the country has a party with this type of atmosphere & thanks to people like you the word has spread to other socialites in the city's we normally visit to for a good time like this. It's nightlife you can be proud to be a part of; but not if you sit at home thinking it doesn't exist.

There are 3 DJs playing mixes of the best hip hop, house, reggae, funk & old school to satisfy your urge to dance. We lead it off with the powerful DJ Brendan Bring'em on the main deck with MC Elixir & have a serious combination of DJ Dirty & DJ YesInDeed on the other decks. There are 5 decks in total; 2 of them are covered in the event of any rain. The other 3 allow you to see the stars as you party with the best Philly has to offer.

Please remember to dress to impress someone & to leave the baseball caps, white t's & athletic wear at home. At this point you should just know that this is not that kind of party. We will deny admission for dress code violations.

For any questions & birthday requests email Nupe894@aol.com.

The art scene is really dope in Philly. If you're interested in meeting women, I'd say hit up a poetry event. Go solo, or with one of your homies. Poetry spots are ALWAYS set up like this:

Women who come with their homies to hear poetry
And couples.

The only men that are usually there are either with their girls, or they're performing.

Philly has some dope spots. The biggest is The Harvest (my collective's spot). It's once a month at World Cafe Live on 30th & Walnut. First week of the month every month with the exception of March 2011. It'll be March 9th. www.worldcafelive.com for details. $10 in advance, $12 at the door

EVERY Thursday there's a spot called Jus Words which is located at Dowlings Palace, 1310 n. Broad Street (next door to the Blue Horizon). It's got that jazz juke joint feel to it most nights. Really dope. Starts at around 10pm. $5

3rd Wednesdays SPIT FIRE jumps at The Reef on 3rd and South. I think admission is $10. Pretty good vibe, and great Caribbean food.

3rd Fridays, Soul Sounds jumps at The Clef Club. $20 admission. Mix of poetry, R&B, some jazz. Really nice vibe. Always a nice crowd. Starts at around 9p

4th Saturdays, 4th Wall Arts Salon jumps. MOST DIVERSE CROWD YOU'LL EVER SEE. The venue switches each month. I've performed there and will be hosting one in the future. It's pretty dope. Google 4th Wall Arts for more details. Definitely worth it.

All of these spots are good to chill as an alternative to dancing. All of them have QUALITY women to meet. AND/OR, they're nice spots to bring a date if you want you or she is into it.

Good lookin' Out Vision. I'm rollin' with Wifey so no booty chasing.

The Harvest sounds cool. I'm only here for this weekend. Is the Harvest on this weekend? I didn't see it listed on the World Cafe link.

I'm definitely going to keep the other places in mind for subsequent visits.

If you park on the street pay the meter and adhere to the time limit. Them muthfuckas are lurking and waiting for your shit to run out of time. Otherwise just park in a parking lot and pay out your ass.
