Zoe Saldana’s ‘Nina’ Gets First Poster, More Online Backlash

My wife Dominican and I tell her shit ain't black all the time. One time she said I'm as black as you are. I said ok name at least 3 characters from Good Times. After she said JJ she was stuck
the shit you wrote is so dumb you gave me a fucking headache

Zoe is the female version of this.....fuck this Black face shit. Watch the documentary instead.

I wouldn't call it blackface because thats the very specific thing. I will say that darkening her complexion in such an obvious way is distracting and can pull the viewer out of the story.

I have no problem with Zoe. The make up wasn't necessary because we know who she's depicting. It's going to be distracting like Johnny Depp in Black Mass.

Will this be yet another year that the Oscars are boycotted for a "Black" movie not getting nominated? Or ... will the Oscars throw it an Affirmative Action bone and let it win despite the backlash, low ticket sales, poor story and par acting.

I haven't read the whole thread so I don't know if this has been addressed but can anyone post proof of Zoe saying she isn't black because for all the years I've seen people make this claim about her I've only ever seen her say is that she was black and proud to be so.

Or Idris Elba in Mandela. gawd.

And I still say she doesn't have the chops. In many of her pics you can see her acting.

I really don't give a fuck what you would call it, but Blackface is exactly what this is. This shit is no different than what Mantan and Sleep and Eat did getting ready for the show in Bamboozled. Yeah they were Black, but they added more "Darkening" to get into character.

No doubt but lets be honest she would've gotten shit on by a lot of people (particularly on this board) even had she not worn that shit.

A lot of people just don't like that sista and from what I can see it seems to be based off bullshit, baseless rumors and lies.

The make up to make her darker was a bad call, and she may/may not have the skill to pull off this role but it appears that a lot of this is based more on unwarranted vitriol towards her than anything else.

this is a caricature that's a deliberate act to show the most stereotypical aspects of black PEOPLE.

Adding Blackface and prosthetics is an insult to Simone's legacy as a Black icon.

Denzel didn't look like Malcolm, but he transformed himself into becoming Malcolm without makeup through his acting skills.

Zoe's skills are lacking in that department, so the best they could do for her was darken her up?

Nah man, this shit ain't cool. She deserves whatever vitriol, warranted and unwarranted for taking this role.

Saldana was born Zoe Yadira Saldaña Nazario[1] in Passaic, New Jersey.[2][3] Her father, Aridio Saldaña, was from the Dominican Republic, while her mother, Asalia Nazario, is from Puerto Rico.[4] Saldana also has Haitian and Lebanese roots.[5][6] She has often spoken of her pride in her ethnicity, and has said: "It doesn't matter how much backlash I will get for it; I will honor and respect my black community because that's who I am."[7] The majority of her early childhood she spent growing up in Jackson Heights, Queens, New York, and her native languages are both English and Spanish. She has two sisters, named Cisely and Mariel, and a half-brother named Nipo, known as "Nipo 809", who is a Dominican artist and producer.[8]

Zoe Saldana-Perego (born Zoe Yadira Saldaña Nazario, June 19, 1978),[1] Zoe Saldana (/sælˈdænə/ sal-DAN), is an American actress and dancer. Following her performances with the FACES theater group, Saldana made her screen debut in an episode of Law & Order (1999). Her film career began a year later with Center Stage (2000), followed by a role in Crossroads (2002). She first gained some prominence for her role as Anamaria in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003).

Saldana's breakthrough came in 2009 with the roles of Nyota Uhura in Star Trek and Neytiri in James Cameron's Avatar (2009). The latter film received widespread acclaim, and is the highest-grossing film of all time (not adjusted for inflation). Saldana continued her successful career with films such as Colombiana (2011), Star Trek Into Darkness (2013), and Guardians of the Galaxy (2014).

In May 2010, it was announced Mary J. Blige and David Oyelowo had been cast in the film as Nina Simone, and Clifton Henderson respectively, with Cynthia Mort directing the film from a screenplay she had written, with production planned for September of that year.[1] In August 2012, it was announced that Zoe Saldana had been cast in the film, replacing Blige as Simone, Blige exited due to financial issues with the project.[2] The casting of Saldana has caused controversy, with Simone Kelly, Simone's daughter saying “My mother was raised at a time when she was told her nose was too wide, her skin was too dark. Appearance-wise this is not the best choice,"[3][4] In 2014, Mort had begun taking legal action after being cut of the decision making process making her upset and unhappy with the project she spent several years developing.[5]

I agree with all of that when that is in fact the legitimate reason for the backlash.

My point was (and it wasn't directed at you) even without any of this she still seems to get the same hate.

Even before the issues with her getting this role, prosthetics, blackface, etc. she still seemed to get this hate from a lot of people.

Perhaps because she isn't a good actress and because Nina's estate was against this film?

What I'm talking about has nothing to do with this film though.

The hate I've seen aimed towards her goes back years way before there was any discussion or clue about her playing Nina.

I have to agree with you on this one. I was in doubt at first but the trailer sold me.

They consider themselves black though, she doesn't.

fan.
“When I go to the D.R., the press in Santo Domingo always asks, “¿Qué te consideras, dominicana o americana?” (What do you consider yourself, Dominican or American?) I don’t understand it, and it’s the same people asking the same question. So I say, time and time again, “Yo soy una mujer negra.” (“I am a black woman.”) [They go,] “Oh, no, tú eres trigueñita.” (“Oh no, you are ‘dark skinned’”) I’m like, “No! Let’s get it straight, yo soy una mujer negra.” (“I am a black woman).”

Because she's a shitty actress who fucks white dudes and plays Black American icons, yet never (to my knowledge) represented Black America.

Come on brother.

She deserves hate because people don't like her acting? Because of who she fucks?

And someone posted a quote from her, one of numerous I've seen attributed to her over the years, speaking clearly and proudly about being a black woman. Ive never seen anything that suggests she feels differently.

Not fucking with her as an actress, or being against her playing Nina, and attacking and shitting on her, even questioning her blackness are totally different things.

'Star Trek's' Zoe Saldana on racism: 'I’m not going to talk about it'

Girl, Bye: Zoe Saldana Claims “People of Color” Don’t Exist

this is what people are salty about...Zoe says this shit then takes a role playing a women who was at the forefront of the Black is Beautiful movement.

Imagine a white actor who downplayed the holocaust and jewish persecution then took role playing a jewish activist who had a big nose so the actor puts on a prosthetic thats
looks obvious. Suffice it to say many in the jewish community wouldn't be happy at all about it.

I just read both articles and in neither did she deny or shit on her race.

What I took from it is that she's tired of always being defined by and having to discuss her race.

Jennifer Lawrence doesn't. Julia Roberts never had to. Same for Scarlett Johansson.

Why should our actors/actresses?
cuz thats how the industry she works in functions. THEY make decision that affect her career based on her gender and ethnicity. THEY see it as an issue. She needs to acknowledge that rather than down playing what she is.

She and kathrine heigl are the same age..as much as katherine has fucked up her career...if she were black she wouldn't have become a romcom queen for that short period of time she was..nor would she have ANY of the restart chances she's gotten over the last ten years or so..

theres your difference. If zoe saldana was white she career would be MUCH bigger than it is with more chances to fuck up and come back. Thats what she should be calling out.
