Al Qaeda's frontman in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, has declared "all-out war" against Shiite Muslims in Iraq in an audiotape attributed to him and posted on the Internet.

The warning was issued after his militants claimed a devastating series of attacks in Bahgdad, including a massive suicide car bombing in a Shiite area that killed 112 people, mainly labourers seeking work.

"The Al Qaeda Organisation in the Land of Two Rivers is declaring all-out war on the Rafidha [a pejorative term for Shiites], wherever they are in Iraq," the tape says.

The authenticity of the tape could not immediately be verified.

Zarqawi, the one-legged extremist who has a $US25 million price on his head, also urged Sunni Arabs to "wake up from your slumber ... the war to exterminate Sunnis will never end".

Iraq's most wanted man also challenged Iraqi leaders to leave the highly fortified 'Green Zone' in Baghdad where the seat of government is located, to challenge his mujahedeen, or holy warriors.

Earlier, militants loyal to the Jordanian-born Zarqawi claimed they had carried out the devastating wave of suicide bombings in Baghdad to avenge an offensive by US and Iraqi troops on the northern rebel town of Tal Afar.

The bombings and shootings claimed 150 lives in the capital, making it the bloodiest day of insurgent attacks in the Iraqi capital since the US-led war of March 2003.

"The conquest of revenge for the Sunni people of Tal Afar has started," it said in the statement, the authenticity of which could not be verified.

So hes waging war on US Forces, Kurds, and Shites? How does he plan to succeed? so far the shites have held back, but if their militias join forces with US Forces to hunt these fuckers out Zarqawi has no chance in Iraq point blank period.

Maybe he's getting desperate. He has not been able to hold the Sunnis (when the insurgency was chased from Falujah he has yet to establish domination over it again; and the Sunnis have shown a will to negotiate into some semblance of a position with the new government) -- ole boi might be looking to civil war (national chaos) as a way of obtaining his aims. If the whole damn country erupts the U.S. would have to spread out again leaving vulnerabilities he could try to exploit. Besides, I doubt he wants a positive vote on the draft constitution next month which might bring Iraqis closer together leaving his ass on the outs. Just thinking out loud, but seems to me there are lots of reasons Zarqawi needs something to happen.

Thats the truth though, but sadly alot of people, including some on this board, look upon Zarqawi as soe kind of revolutionary hero fighting US Forces, when in fact he is hardly that, he is a lowlife ass clown trying to destroy Iraq to make America look bad, thats it.

'But despite the allegations, little is known about the man himself - and some experts even doubt he is alive'
:smh: :smh:
why aren't bounty hunters, private mercenaries going after this bogeyman but OUR SOLDIERS??i hear there are top notch private security guarding the rich homes in New Orleans,,do they know there's a 25 million on Zarqawi's head in Iraq??
soon we'll hear Zarqawi is operating near the border with Syria to justify invading Syria..these guys are using 'Bogeyman theory' to invade countries and destabilize the middle east.
Best exit strategy for our troops in Iraq will be for a civil war (unfortunately),which will bring our boys home to their families very fast and leave it to the UN to broker peace..

Disorganization Worries al-Qaida in Iraq

Disorganization Worries al-Qaida in Iraq
By TAREK EL-TABLAWY, Associated Press Writer
Mon May 8, 6:12 PM ET

Al-Qaida in Iraq is concerned about disorganization within its cells in the Baghdad area, with one extremist describing them as simply a "daily annoyance" to the Iraqi government, according to documents released Monday by the U.S. military.

The military said the documents were seized during April 16 raids in the Youssifiyah area, 12 miles south of the capital. The documents indicate the group is worried that its forces are unable to secure solid footholds within Baghdad, U.S. military officials said.

Notably absent from the documents were the usual derogatory references to Shiites as heretics, and the Americans as either "crusaders" or "occupation forces" — language common to most militant postings that appear on the Internet.

"This information confirms what the government of Iraq, coalition forces and ultimately the people of Iraq already know — that al-Qaida in Iraq's role only attempts to impede Iraqis in following the road to prosperity, security and national unity," U.S. military spokesman Brig. Gen. Rudy Wright said in a statement.

In one document as released by the U.S., an unidentified al-Qaida member writes that the influence and power of Iraq's Shiite majority cannot be taken lightly, especially in Baghdad, "particularly when the power of the ministries of Interior and Defense is given to them, compared to the power of the mujahedeen" in the city.

The document says that the Baghdad cells are capable of only "hit and run" operations, leading the public to conclude that "the Shiites are stronger in Baghdad and nearer to controlling it, while the mujahedeen ... are not considered more than a daily annoyance to the Shiite government."

Release of the documents appears part of a U.S. campaign to deflate the image of al-Qaida in Iraq and its leader, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. The documents were released four days after the U.S. military aired what it said were clips cut from a previously released al-Qaida in Iraq video which showed a bumbling al-Zarqawi fumbling with an unfamiliar, American-made machine gun.

The version of the tape posted on the Web showed al-Zarqawi as a confident, skilled warrior.

The other document released Monday outlined the group's strategy in Baghdad. It said al-Qaida should focus on the capital while reducing attacks on Sunni areas "in order to reduce pressure on the Sunnis ... while cleansing (Sunni areas) of spies and Shiites."

U.S. military officials have said that militants are expected to mount more attacks in Baghdad as lawmakers struggle to form the country's first democratically elected national unity government — a process that has been rife with sectarian and ethnic tension mirroring the violence around Iraq.

Focusing on Baghdad, as explained by the strategy document, would force the U.S. military to shift resources there and allow militants to regroup in their traditional bases, including Anbar province, which includes the cities of Fallujah and Ramadi. It also reiterates al-Zarqawi's long-stated goal of targeting the country's majority Shiites.

But the strategy document complains that "the strength of the brothers in Baghdad" is based mostly on car bombs and "groups of assassins lacking any organized military capabilities."

The writer complains that the Americans and the Iraqi government forces "were able to absorb our painful blows," raise new recruits and "take control of Baghdad as well as other areas, one after the other."

"This is why every year is worse than the previous year, as far as the mujahedeen's control and influence over Baghdad," the document said.

It also charged that the major Sunni groups — the Iraqi Islamic Party and the clerical Association of Muslim Scholars — have "anesthetized" the Sunni population. It warned that "we will have a problem" if the government succeeds in raising all-Sunni army units.

Insurgents have recently targeted recruits from the first all-Sunni unit, killing at least seven of them in two separate attacks last week.

"Either we let them go beyond the limits, or fight them and risk inciting the Sunnis against us through the channels of the party and the association," the document says.

CAIRO, Egypt (AP) - The leader of al-Qaida in Iraq urged Sunnis to confront Shiites and ignore calls for reconciliation in a new audiotape posted Friday on the Web, saying Shiite militias are killing and raping the Sunni Arab minority.

The tape was a four-hour sermon by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi against Shiites, denouncing their top cleric, Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani as an "atheist," and saying the community had collaborated with invaders throughout Iraq's history.

"Oh Sunni people, wake up, pay attention and prepare to confront the poisons of the Shiite snakes who are afflicting you with all agonies since the invasion of Iraq until our day. Forget about those advocating the end of sectarianism and calling for national unity," al-Zarqawi said.

The authenticity of the audiotape could not be independently confirmed. It was posted on a Web forum often used by his al-Qaida in Iraq for messages and the voice resembled that of al-Zarqawi's on other confirmed tapes from him.

A written statement said Friday's tape was made two months ago and that the group had intended to post it then, but "circumstances" prevented it from doing so. The statement, posted with the audio, did not elaborate.

It was the first message from al-Zarqawi since April 29, when he appeared in a video saying that any government formed in Iraq would be merely a "stooge" of the Americans. That video was the first time al-Qaida in Iraq had released images showing his face.

Al-Zarqawi, a Jordanian, has claimed responsibility for some of the most high-profile suicide bombings in Iraq and also for other attacks in Jordan, including the bombing of three hotels in Amman in November that killed 63 people.

In the video, al-Zarqawi denounced militias linked to Shiite political parties in the new government that many accuse of running death squads killing Sunnis in a wave of sectarian violence the past months.

"The Badr Brigades and Mahdi Army are storming the houses of Sunnis under the pretext of searching for the mujahedeen, and even if they didn't find any, they kill men and arrest women, put them in prison and rape them and steal everything from the houses of the Sunnis," he said.

U.S. and Iraqi officials have frequently accused al-Zarqawi of seeking to spark a civil war between Sunnis and Shiites, and many of his group's suicide bombings have targeted Shiite civilians and mosques. Al-Zarqawi follows a radical Salafi version of Islam that vilifies Shiism.

Much of Friday's tape was aimed at rallying Sunnis - who make up the majority of Muslims in the Arab world but are a minority in Iraq - against Shiites across the Mideast and Iran, which many Sunni Iraqis deeply mistrust for its influence with the Shiite parties that now dominate Iraq's government.

"There is no difference between Shiites of Iran and the Shiites in the rest of the Arab world either in Iraq, Lebanon. their beliefs are the same .. their hatred of Sunnis is the same," he said, adding, "The roots of Jews and the Shiites are the same."

"Anyone calling for reconciliation between Sunnis and Shiites is either a man who knows the truth but is betraying his religion and his nation ... or a man who is ignorant and should be taught," he said.

He said Shiite leaders in Iran and Lebanon - including the Hezbollah guerrilla movement - only pretend to confront Israel and the United States. He mocked Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for "screaming and calling for wiping Israel from the map," but doing nothing, referring to anti-Israeli comments earlier this year.

Al-Zarqawi had lowered his profile earlier this year, announcing in January that his group was joining an umbrella organization of insurgent groups called the Mujahedeen Shura Council. But his April videotape appeared aimed at putting the al-Qaida leader back in the spotlight. It showed dramatic images of him firing a machine gun in the desert and consulting with mujahedeen leaders, apparently to emphasize his control.

Among other attacks, U.S. officials believe al-Zarqawi personally beheaded American businessman Nicholas Berg, whose killing was shown on a videotape distributed by al-Qaida in Iraq in 2004.
