From Superhero Hype:

Zack Snyder (Watchmen, 300) has been officially confirmed as the director of the upcoming Superman reboot, reports Heat Vision.

Snyder's name recently appeared as a rumored candidate for the position and one of several directors on the Warner Bros. short list. Snyder himself revealed in 2008 that he was originally in line to direct Superman Returns, but that he was not interested in taking the job.

"They asked me to direct a Superman movie, and I said no," was Snyder's response more than two years ago, "He's a tricky one nowadays, isn't he? He's the king daddy of all comic-book heroes, but I'm just not sure how you sell that kind of earnestness to a sophisticated audience anymore."

Whether it is Snyder's view of the project or the new tone itself that has changed remains to be seen, but what is known is that the film will move forward with a script from David Goyer and Jonathan Nolan. Christopher Nolan will "godfather" the production, aiming for a late 2012 release.

I didn't hate it nearly as much as most people seem to but yeah, they should have just done the reboot then. Can't argue with that.

This might be the coolest shit ever

This movie will depend on one thing. Lex Luthor. If they do not write him correctly. This film will fail hard. You can get any pie eating fucker to play Superman, really. You need to have a tough, smart and eccentric Lex Luthor to be Superman's superior in it for this fly right.

If they go that slimy crook route with him...you may as well put this next to Catwoman and call it a day.

Zack Snyder To Direct The Re-Rebirth Of SUPERMAN! Villain To Be General Zod!Beaks here...

Update 4:37 PM PT: Geoff Boucher of the LA Times' "Hero Complex" blog gets the first comment from Snyder. Nothing revelatory, but this is quote is fairly interesting...

“I think he is viable, yes,” Snyder said. “He endures. We all want to know, ‘How will he come to us now?’ He is the biggest and the baddest of them all. The greatest of them all, right? We all want to know how the next chapter takes shape. I want to know how it will take shape.”

Update 4:03 PM PT: This just in from The Hollywood Reporter's Borys Kit: Superman's villain in THE MAN OF STEEL will be General Zod!

Deadline's Mike Fleming has the scoop! As probably should've been expected, Warner Bros. has brought together its two geek-friendly visionaries - Christopher Nolan and Zack Snyder - to reinvent what should be the studio's most valuable franchise after the HARRY POTTER series concludes. It's hard not to get giddy at the thought of a Snyder-directed, Nolan-produced SUPERMAN: THE MAN OF STEEL. The screenplay is being written by David Goyer, and it's expected the film will be completed in time to clean up during the 2012 holiday season.

Looking over the directors who were allegedly in the running, it appears this gig was Snyder's to either lose or turn down. Though I would've been interested in seeing what Duncan Jones, Darren Aronofsky or Matt Reeves might've done with the character, the studio needed a filmmaker both comfortable with working on a large scale under crushing expectations, and capable of delivering tentpole production value. That's why this was only ever going to go to Snyder or Tony Scott - with Jonathan Liebesman lurking as a dark horse (provided BATTLE: LOS ANGELES lives up to the Comic Con hype).

Now the big question: does this mean THE MAN OF STEEL's tone is going to be darker than, say, Supes getting hammered and straightening the Leaning Tower of Pisa? I hope not. Though Snyder and Nolan clearly share a pessimistic view of human nature, Superman should - for now, at least - appeal to our better angels. This appeared to be the direction in which Goyer was headed when he took on the scripting chores - and I assume it still is. It's just very easy to see Snyder and Nolan working each other into a nihilistic frenzy. Maybe that's the Superman we deserve today.

What do you guys and gals want to see out of a Zack Snyder-directed, Christopher Nolan-produced, David Goyer-scripted Superman?

They should have done the reboot last time. That Superman Return was hot trash.

it was not complete trash, I was disappointed but it looked good but was too understated and tried to be all smart and angst ridden and the baby:( and the krypton island:(...

I wish they just made a good comic book on film like X-Men 2.

With the baby and giant island being 80% of the film...What part was good?

The part where he held a plane?????

Come on.

Glad they got Snyder directing and Nolan overseeing, now if they would only use this guy as supes (since he's been duing the clark kent thang for a decade):

That dude is box office poison.

Besides the show would need it's OWN movie. Because that storyline they got going was written by 4 wet cats in a potato sack.

You have to be good enough to hire before you can be called box office poison.

As long as this storyline's used to get rid of that DAMN Singer Baby...
