If I saw the suitcase or luggage just sitting there, I'd assume that something was suspicious about it and keep it pushing. I would presume that there ARE eyes on it just waiting for someone to swipe it.
This and if it's anywhere near an international airport you can safely assume there are cameras everywhere that caught your plates. Maybe 30 plus years ago, but today??? Someone saw it and there are ways of tracking you down.
