Xbox 360 Elite..........

The Elite drops tommorow, and I was just curious as to how many people will be grabbing one. Especially any current 360 owners. Rumor has it that ebgames is offering a $250 trade in credit for an Xbox 360 premium towards an Elite. Are the new features enough to warrant you spending the extra $229?

rumors are true. it has the 120 GB hard drive which will sell seperate for 179. and it has hdmi outputs for your digital hi-def gaming

happy with the one I have, maybe when I get a TV that uses HDMI, I might think about it, but not now. Let the one's who begged for it, have it.

nope, i have a core system not a premium, plus there's no way i'm paying all that money to see 1080i (the highest that my tv is capable of outputing) via hdmi vs component which would be like a 0.5% increase in quality. :smh:

i'm also happy, with what i have.

i might just get the hard drive, when it gets cheaper and that IPtv shit comes out.

i feel you

Yall missing the point.....this was made for the "ELITE" gamers out there.

Its like buying a Benz......U get that Benz cred......But then u got that AMG version out there too lol

They trying to give u 3 flavors, 3 price points, 3 looks to choose from. All games will work with all 3 systems.

If your TV does not have 1080p res then this Elite system is not for you. All you gotta do is get a core system 299.99 and buy the new 120 hard drive for 179.99 and use them same Component Cables and be just as happy as u would be with the HDMI cable in the Elite system. And buy some black spray paint.

Remember this was made for the Elite gamers......by Christmas time this will be probably replace the current 399.99 system. But the Core system aint goin no where.

But by the time you do that, you have already spent the $479 for the elite...

I have a carbon faceplate and the component can do 1080p so 229 for a black paint job and bigger yet still pathetically small hard drive?
Fuck that

Maybe when I need a new mediacenter extender for another room

I was gonna get the elite, but I'm not because I don't have anything hi-def in my house except a HP vs17e monitor that puts out a 1280x1024 resolution so I don't need a hdmi port, I'll just get a vga cord or use the SDTV component. I wont be using the 360 for all that other shit so fuck it. even though lookswise the black 360 does look nice.

I won't be getting it. I got a new Xbox from Best Buy 2 months ago due to mine having the red ring of death. The games are clear enough for me.

I was gonna get the hard drive. But when I saw that price I changed my mind.:( I will get it when IPTV drops.

I will assume that the "elite" is the most well equipped of the 360 family. That being said, whats the price tag and whats the price tag of the compareable PS3?

Game console warriors please do not flame me, i have no clue and simply wanted to know.

Thanks in advance.

the new xbox 360 (elite version) will be $479

the 60 gig ps3 is $599

the discontinued 20 gig ps3 is/was $499

Thanks Praetor. Isnt there a difference in the harddrive space on the 360 elite and the highest level of PS3 (something that would justify the price difference?)?

When I get hi def tv. Im copping. Anyone know where they sell broken , or very cheap 360's. I want to do that 3 screen shit with forza but i dont want to spend full price for them .

Outside of the HDMI output, which you can modify yourself, I don't think it's worth the money.

It's cool, you just have to go to the XBOX forums and see all threads begging for HDMI before they announced this. It was constant and they were begging for a bigger HDD when it wasn't necessary. I hope they are happy, now they gotta pay out the ass for it.

Bigger hd isnt necessary? Download a few demos and it soon will be. I dont even rip music or download movies onto the hard drive but if I did Id be pissed before now and if I didn't know about the drive mod.

You don't have to keep them there you know? I download them all the time, but I delete them when I'm done with them. I don't rip music either but on the original XBOX the HDD was only 8GB and I had tons of music on it. Besides that, you can stream music and movies from you computer, that's why the bigger HDD wasn't necessary. But those that begged for it, got it so they should be happy.

I dont know which xbox you bought but mine had 50 gb .

my tv goes up 1080i, me personally I slept on the notion of shelling out another 480.00 for an Xbox and cant do it. the core that I have with the hard drive is suffice for me. maybe in a month, maybe I may shell it out but I cant see just up and giving microsoft 500.00 for another xbox :smh:

From what I've read about it's not even worth the price. Games don't look that much better and they are still using same noisy cpu and and noisy disk drive. The bottom line is just go ahead get the 120GB drive seperately if you already on one.

Xbox 360 Elite vs. classic: the test

Well, we've had a few hours with our Xbox 360 Elite wherein we've done nothing but test it against the most rigorous (unscientific) means at our disposal. But finally we are able to answer the question: is an HDMI-enabled Xbox 360 capable of outputting noticeably higher quality gameplay and movies? We compared our classic Xbox 360 (manufactured 12/08/2005) with our spankin' new 360 Elite (manufactured 3/4/2007). Ready for the face-off? Check out the gallery, and read on for our conclusions.

We tested the consoles with a Sharp 46D62U (46-inch) 1080p LCD and a 5.1 surround system -- we went HDMI vs component, since it's safe to assume the majority of people don't have VGA inputs on their HDTVs (including us). We played the first stage of Gears of War (on casual, so what?), and then plugged in our HD DVD drive and watched a few scenes from Batman Begins.

Console noise
We know how much you all wanted your Xbox 360 Elite to quiet down a bit, but we have some bad news for ya. As we heard from our sources who supplied us with much of our info about the Elite, unfortunately the noise level is about the same as before. It doesn't use the new 65nm chips, so it seems to require the same number of case fans.

The same is true of the disc drive. Our Elite and classic drives do sound different, and it's obvious they're not the same make or model. However, unfortunately, they're equally loud. Sorry guys, you're still going to have to put up with the same level of noise as before -- don't come looking to the Elite for something that sounds less like a shop-vac.

Heat
As we said before, these are using the old round of 90nm chips, not the 65nm variety. So it goes without saying that using the same chips as before, these things are going to produce the same amount of heat. We didn't run an 18 hour stress test or anything (obviously), but both units did feel about the same after an hour of playing games and movies, and they both felt like they were outputting about the same amount of heat.

HDMI 1080p vs component 1080p/i
We're going to be totally honest here, we hardly noticed a damn difference at all. We figured the best visual test would be playing in 1080p on both HDMI and component video, and we were right. What little difference we did notice, we noticed it with that test. In a couple of darker scenes in Gears there seemed to be a little more depth to the blacks (and a bit more distance detail because of it). But to tell you how subtle it was, we didn't even notice it until we literally started flipping back and forth as fast as we could. Fast motion, spinning, action, all the rest -- it looks almost identical on both consoles.

When watching an HD DVD in 1080p on HDMI and 1080i on component, we definitely didn't really notice anything different. The age old question though, right? Is 1080p actually noticeably different? Not to us, and probably not even if you have a 720p set -- assuming you're viewing on anything less than a massive, massive display. By the way, before you make any judgments about perceived visual quality based on our screen caps, please remember that those were taken with a regular camera, not pro screen capturing tools . In other words, what you may think is a big difference in quality may actually just be a small change in light metering or exposure. In other words, you'll kind of have to take our word for it when we say it looks almost identical.

Audio
We can now definitely confirm that despite its HDMI output, the Xbox 360 Elite still doesn't enable advanced codec support (like Dolby TrueHD). You still have the same three options as you had before: digital stereo, Dolby Digital 5.1, and DD with WMA Pro. When we played back an HD DVD with TrueHD audio (Batman Begins), it just stayed on DD5.1, nothing else happened. Bummer. But again, that's what we were expecting.

Other minor bits
We did notice that the front power button on the Elite console is much clickier than the squishy power button on our classic 360. Probably not enough clikiness to actually justify the purchase in and of itself, we'd imagine.

Also, the black controller is entirely matte, whereas the white controller is matte everywhere except the slick silver strip on the bottom. Since that bottom strip is where a couple of your fingers rest when holding the controller we found the entirely matte black controller slightly preferable.

We haven't yet checked out DVD upscaling, but that's on our list of thing sto do. Anything else you want to know or see? Leave us a comment.

Final thoughts
Basically, unless you are seriously eagle-eyed, have a massive friggin screen, or for whatever reason need to use HDMI because you're all out of component inputs, your investment in the first-gen Xbox 360 is probably safe. Do yourself a favor, just buy that 120GB drive if you need the space, the HDMI really just doesn't justify replacing your whole console for a new $480 unit. Then again, if you're truly "elite" then all the stuff we just said really doesn't matter, and you're probably gonna buy this thing anyway. Cheers, enjoy!

Waste of good money. They should've just put all that shit in the first version instead of lying and saying it wasn't necessary. Now all the sheep are gonna NEED this version and Microsoft is gonna use them to trick the total sales figures just like Nintendo with the DS Lite. 120GB HDD for $180 = anal rape.
