School sends home bisexual Queens student who wears 'I enjoy vagina' T-shirt

Brianna Demato says school is violating her right to free speech. She wore 'Enjoy Coke'-style shirt to Newtown High School and ordered to go home when she refused to change clothing

Brianna Demato and her mom, Cathy, say Newtown High School had no right to make her change a “vagina” shirt or be forced to leave the Queens building.

A Queens high school sent a student home Tuesday, saying her “I enjoy vagina” T-shirt was a distraction — but the bisexual teen says administrators are trouncing her free speech.

And her mother is on her side.

Brianna Demato, 15, of Woodhaven, wore the explicit “Enjoy Coke”-style T-shirt to Newtown High School Tuesday — and said she was sent home when she refused to change.

“It’s hypocritical,” said Brianna, who insisted she’s worn the flirty shirt to school dozens of times without incident. “They use the word in class — why can’t I, on a shirt?”

The idealistic teen’s conflict with administrators started at lunch when a dean spotted the message written on her cherry-red shirt.

Brianna said she was hauled into an assistant principal’s office, where she was given a choice: Change the shirt or go home.

Metro: Sophomore Brianna Demato, 15, a student who was told to go home because her shirt says " I enjoy vigina", poses for pictures outside New Town High School located at 48-01 90th Street in Elmhurst, New York on Tuesday, October 2, 2012.

She refused to change, so a dean called her mother — but Brianna’s mom, Cathy Demato, took her daughter’s side. She rushed to school to defend her child — and make a point.

“They’re discriminating against Brianna. They pulled her out of class for nothing,” seethed Demato, 39. “She’s not hurting anyone. It’s her right to wear that shirt.”

Demato told administrators her daughter’s vagina shirt should stay — but they disagreed. The irate mom said a dean called school safety agents to escort them off campus.

Later, school officials told Demato that if she gave her daughter a different shirt, the girl would be allowed to return to class.

Otherwise, Brianna will be given an instructional workbook with tasks to complete in a separate room, away from other students.

The irate mom vowed not to back down.

“(Wednesday) she’s wearing a shirt that says ‘I’m the B---h From Down the Block,’ ” Demato said. “The message is, she can wear whatever she wants.”

Education Department officials said administrators at Brianna’s school didn’t kick her out, but the pair left on their own.

Either way, school officials have the authority to keep the girl out of class for as long as they want, if they disagree with her outfit.

“The language on the shirt was likely to cause disruption and the language is inappropriate for school,” said agency spokeswoman Margie Feinberg.

Newtown High Principal John Ficalora declined to comment.

Some of Brianna’s schoolmates thought the gynocentric duds went too far.

“I wouldn’t want my kids wearing a shirt like that,” said junior Leann Roman, 16. “Go to the gay parade like that. Don’t go to school like that.”

But others thought the shirt was no big deal.

“I have a lot of friends that wear shirts that are worse than that,” said senior Edward Carmnatty, 17. “They don’t get sent home.”

Demato insisted that her daughter’s clothes aren’t a distraction.

“You can’t stop somebody from being who they are,” she said. “My daughter is whoever she wants to be.”

Pathetic what gay shit is leading to in America along with her mom defending her.

But aside from the rights issue, is it ok for a girl to wear Enjoy Dick tee to school? No

FOH.com

You go to school to learn, not to broadcast a statement about your sexual preferences.

Children don't have free speech in school. You either change or go home and the paren is irresponsible in letting her wear it to school in the first place.

Re: Would you let your kid wear this shirt to school? Read more: http://www.nydailyn

Well no child of mine would ever consider wearing it. So for me that wouldn't be an issue. Teach your kids to conduct themselves with class and that shirt stays on the shelf. Just look at her mother, you already know......she has no clue about class. A caring mother would never pose for that picture. :smh:

My brother bought his son a t shirt when he was in DC that started with the word bitches and went on with a whole load of not age appropriate speech.....:hmm: the boy is 2 :hmm: lets just say the shirt has never gone back to their house and never will.:hmm:

You know where the problem lies, its with the parents. The kids are not to blame. You did right with that shirt. Seems some of us have no common sense.

Young man was complaining to me about he can't get hired. He went job hunting with his pants sagging, shoes untied and an oversized tee. I told him he will never get hired dressed like that. People don't realize HR people will size you up in 10 seconds.

what's the issue here?

nobody could wear that shirt to school
has shit to do with her being bisexual
straight boy would be sent home too
just like a straight girl wearing a shirt saying i enjoy penis would be too.

So your saying you would allow your 15 year old daughter to wear that shirt. Don't forget she is an extension of your wife and yourself. :hmm:

Dave you said overindulgent.....that doesn't begin to cover it. :smh:

No.

And this is why I support uniforms in school anyway.

Its inappropriate.

You need to teach our children about REAL life...

the real world aint GLEE.

This is a misguided parent or just a mother seeking attention.

This reminds me of the girl with the provocative yearbook pictures

BUT
if she HAS worn the shirt BEFORE and there was no policy against ALL student's attire...

the SCHOOL is to blame here.

Where her father anyway?

When they said that she has worn he shirt before, who knows how she wore it, she could of had a sweater the open button types, that only exposed part. But irrelevant, she just wasn't caught before. Shit is inappropriate for school.

That yearbook chick you posted looks like how half the girls in my daughters school dress. That shit seems to be the norm.

The school STILL should have some type of policy in place to protect itself.

I cant believe what these girls are wearing now fam:smh:

But the thing is I know back in the day the girls get around the corner they roll up the skirts and stuff...:D

but NOW it seems like they just leave the house in the morning dressed like that...

where the parents?

I bet if they started sending those kids BACK HOME because of it it would stop...

let those parents be late for work a couple days in a row.

:itsawrap:

My daughter is in a predominant white school. At 15-16, how these girls talk back to their parents, wear clothes, general demeanor is straight disrespectful. Every blue moon we gotta remind my daughter she ain't one of them and knock her ass back in line. We're west indian parents and don't play that shit.

Fam, I swear I want to write a book on parenting with that EXACT title.

I got nieces and nephews telling me there isn't any racism anymore, that they have a bunch of gay/bi-sexual friends, freedom of expression, no one judges you by what you wear or how you look...

I'm like, talk to me in a few years when u out your momma's house:hmm:

No it doesnt.
For me, her sexuality isnt even an issue, it's just an age-inappropriate shirt for a 15 yr old.

No.

I find it hard to believe that she was allowed to wear that shirt to school before so she either slipped between the cracks or had it covered up.
In 2012, every school has some type of dress code. They had them when I was in school whether rural or city so I would bet money her school has one.

Re: Would you let your kid wear this shirt to school? Read more: http://www.nydailyn

SMH... :smh:

She's arguing about "Freedom of Speech" and "Constitutional Rights", but I doubt she (or her mother) know anything about it them. I'd say force her to take a class and do a research paper about it, to really learn what those terms mean. She has no basis in the matter, the school has the right to tell her to not wear the shirt.

i said what is the issue here why is it a big deal for her being sent home for wearing that shirt meaning that she should have been sent home and nobody should have said shit we shouldn't even know about this story.

the shirt is the shirt is the shirt
you can't wear that to school.

Re: Would you let your kid wear this shirt to school? Read more: http://www.nydailyn

I wish most places would go the uniform route.....one can still "dress up" a uniform to feel like an individual. In the WI that is what is the norm and we never thought of ourselves and anything less than individual.

The mother should know better so many other ways to make a statement that to dress inappropriately.

Playahaitian am gonna be copping that book when its written because West Indians do NOT play when it comes to discipline and youths getting outta order.
