....did not know how to change a tire?

When I lived in Cali, more than half of the guys I met didn't even know how to change a tire, fix a doorknob, or paint a room.

Is it important for a guy to be handy for you to take him seriously?

Since I've moved to Dallas, it seem like all the men know how to do these things and more. They aren't afraid of getting their hands dirty. Just curious what yall think about it.

I confess....I like a handy man:yes:

Like yesterday my ex fixed a hole under the dishwasher- spackle and everything! And I was soooooo impressed I almost gave him some (almost :hmm:) but anywhoo I really appreciate a man that can hang a shelf and help me do things around this incredibly annoying home renovation project that seems to never end. A guy that can fix cars gets some extra points too. I've always found car maintenance incredibly sexy (probably because all that is a big mystery to me).

Just like no man wants an undomesticated woman, no woman wants an unhandy man... You want me to clean/cook/wash, etc; I expect you to lift a finger and fix things... I think that's fair, right?

I really wish you were joking about this, the idea of this is very disturbing. These task your speaking of are basic, maybe 6 nuts or screws. Men that can't handle these task are for the most part worthless. :smh: Even worse is the fact some are afraid to get their hands dirty. That way of thinking is very costly and it weakens a man's appeal in the eyes of women. (hence the thread)

This means when something like changing a lock is needed someone else must be called in to do the job. Someone who will get paid charging a hefty sum of money for a 20 minute job. Its sad to think there's men out there that won't handle these elementary task. :smh:

For the brothers out there with this problem some advice. Tools are expensive but they usually pay for themselves quickly. Tools used once of twice have paid for themselves.

Ahh but here's the real deal, being able to handle the task as described above will usually open doors of opportunity. :D Yeah! I keep my tools in my car trunk. Ya never know! :yes:

Sad, but true...I had a great father who was, errr, not so handy when it came to things. Kinda like Cliff Huxtable when it came to fixing stuff around the house...he MEANT well, but you never wanted to be the next person in line to use that appliance/electronic/furniture...:lol::lol::lol:

That was how I began learning how to put together things and fix things myself... Not that I wouldn't mind a man doing it, but, in his absence, I want to be able to take care of home too ;)

I won't touch some appliances or electrical devices the risk is too high should they malfunction. Fire in the home is no joke. But what the OP described, there's no excuse.

Certain things around the home should be easy enough to repair without calling in professional help.

BTW my father was pretty much inept himself. Thumbs up to you for handling your own little task. :yes:

You can find good tutorials to fix a lot of appliance on line or you can ask almost anyone working/cruising in a hardware store.

I learned how to wire a house and install A/C in IRAQ. Me and about 5 other dudes built the building that would be our cardio/fitness center in about 2 weeks. The only thing missing was windows.
 
I learned how to fix certain things just from my dad making me do it with him. Never once looked at any instructions either. Every man should know how to do simple things like changing a tire. Honestly anybody that has ever had a car should be able to change a tire, check their oil, and other simple things.

Appreciate you, Ma! I've always loved Black Women who aren't afraid to get things done [no matter what].

I had tenants that couldn't hang them $5 blinds or put air in a tire. They were young black [men] who thought they were ballers, but should have been charged for the air they breathed because they were so worthless.

We evicted them, which may be part of the hate here, but any man that doesn't know how to even hold a screwdriver doesn't deserve to carry a pair or grow facial hair.

I can't fix EVERYTHING, but the first thing any male I grew up with taught me was MEN FIX THINGS!

...one man's opinion.

I enjoy fixing things and I don't mind getting dirty, but I really love it when a guy can do it for me. It's nice not to have to worry about doing those kind of things by yourself sometimes.

lol silly shit. But lets get this clear, do you ask dude if can change a tyre ? I think most times dude might have already hit a couple times before you find out he aint a handy guy. If you talking crap after he already hit he would then end up thinking you just a silly hoe - played yourself.

Not really. I just couldn't be serious with a guy who's less handy than me...
 
Interesting opinions in this thread.

I wouldn't say that a man who doesn't know how to do those things is worthless, he just probably has talents in other areas. Some guys just don't have the dexterity for home improvement or mechanical work. I have a father who taught me how to do most of the things we're talking about in here when I was younger, but I've never had to use the majority of that knowledge in my adult life except for building Ikea furniture or fixing a leaky faucet. I personally don't own a car because I don't need one, and my super takes care of most of the apartment issues.

I agree. I am pretty crafty myself, but I know that there are brothers out there who just aren't good in that department. Just as I wouldn't leave a woman who couldn't cook,( but damn it does help!!!), I can only say that there are many other skill sets out there that should be considered before walking out on the next guy who can't build an entertainment center without instructions...

I know many cats who have never lifted a hammer in their lives, and who also don't know the difference between a flathead and a Phillips head screwdriver. Mind you these are privileged people we're talking about.

Building stuff without directions is overrated in my opinion; it's retarded macho bullshit and shows a lack of common sense. Better to get it right the first time than to have it come crashing down around you as one of my friends found out the hard way.

There's also the generational gap that isn't being discussed here.
