Re: Dubai Inc

This sounds like a great place to make money. Even if you had to leave your family for like a year or two, there sounds like enough oppetunity to make a bundle and send it back home.

From what I see in the video, this Sheikh Mohammed is a visionary. By the way, How do they feel about americans in Dubai?

having lived in Dubai i can tell you Americans are not very popular in any where in the Middle East but when it comes to the UAE they are slightly cool with westerners but they tend to warm more to Scandinavians and Brits since most Americans are seen as soldiers. In terms of just living they would warm to you after they get used to you. That said there shit loads of Americans living in Dubai but there are countless Britons as well.

Its always good to find jobs with international companies but there are also opportunities in education and many other areas

Re: Dubai Inc

What's the best place to search for jobs in Dubai? It's looking like if you have a passport this may be the place to go before Martial Law kicks in.

Re: Dubai Inc

More Americans Vault Overseas to Search for Jobs

The Wall Street meltdown has already left tens of thousands of American financial professionals unemployed, and thousands more may face the same fate. The crisis, a weak economy and increased competition for available jobs are sending some professionals running for the border.

Executive recruiters say more professionals, especially those in finance, have been inquiring about opportunities outside the U.S. in the past few months. Some undergraduate finance and M.B.A. students are refocusing their job searches from Wall Street to overseas. And it's not just the typical globetrotter -- the young and unattached -- looking for work outside the U.S.
In a number of cases, people with families say they are willing to uproot the entire clan for the sake of job stability.

Recent surveys from executive-search firm Korn/Ferry International add to the idea. One found that 53% of 438 respondents believe the best job opportunities are in developing economies such as Brazil, Russia, India and China. Another showed 20% of 718 respondents said they would be more likely to accept an overseas work assignment now, in an economic downturn, than in a stable economy.

Although non-U.S. markets are suffering as a result of the spreading credit crisis, the financial job market elsewhere hasn't been damaged as severely as it has been in New York and other U.S. financial hubs. American employers cut 159,000 jobs in September alone, and that figure doesn't take into account the newest wave of job losses on Wall Street.

Recruiters say that although many major markets are facing similar fates to the U.S., job opportunities for finance professionals in Asia, the Middle East and Central and Eastern Europe still abound. "There has been a gold rush to places like Dubai," says Alex Alcott, partner and head of U.S. investment banking at Heidrick & Struggles, an executive search firm. He also cites Beijing, Shanghai and Moscow as other areas of opportunity for finance professionals.

Robert Olman, president of Alpha Search Advisory Partners, a search firm in Roslyn, N.Y., that focuses on hedge funds and investment banks, says he doesn't expect the financial-hiring market to be noticeably healthier in the U.S. until at least the second quarter of 2009. "And we have a long way to go until we see healthy," he says. To that end, people who can make the move are considering opportunities elsewhere.

Mr. Olman says he has seen interest in working abroad increase threefold since last year. "It's somewhat ironic that people are seeking these emerging markets for job security," he says. In July, a former client, a partner with a multibillion-dollar New York hedge fund, resigned and moved his family to Shanghai to pursue opportunities in pre-IPO equity investing.

Parts of Europe are also appealing to those Americans considering a move, even though cities such as London have been affected because of exposure to mortgage-backed securities. Ed Moerbe, managing director of executive search firm Stanton Chase International's Dallas office, has seven executives vying to be chief operating officer at a global industrial and financial company in Denmark. Last year just one or two candidates from the U.S. might have put themselves in the running, he says. "I'm blown away; I've never seen people so willing to move before," says Mr. Moerbe, who has worked as a recruiter for 20 years.

Jay Caron of Indianapolis, who was an executive vice president with a manufacturing company and has been without a job since mid-August, is one of the candidates contending for the position. Mr. Caron, 37 years old, has a wife and two young children and says he will consider a move to wherever he gets an offer, domestically or abroad. Denmark is attractive to him, he says, because English is prevalent but also because "of the economic stability and geopolitical climate."

Destinations in Asia and the Middle East are most popular right now, recruiters say. In March, Ariel Katz left a position at Bank of America's credit-product underwriting group in New York. He says he saw what was coming: The slowing economy would affect his position and pay. He began looking at international opportunities with Deloitte's financial advisory services practice and moved to Israel with his wife in June. "It doesn't feel like we're in crisis mode here," says the 38-year-old of the Israeli business climate. "The feeling seems to be all across America that these are the worst days."

Jackie Wilbur, director of career development at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Sloan School of Management, says M.B.A. students are showing an increased interest in investment-banking firms in Hong Kong, London, Shanghai and the Middle East. For the first time, the school is organizing a Hong Kong job-search trip for January.

Jud Saviskas, executive director of the business career center at the University of Connecticut School of Business, says the school is adding an international element to special events meant to help alums who have lost their jobs. For the school's events in October and November, officials are actively seeking companies with job opportunities in overseas offices to bring to campus.

From what my mates told me it was just another 'soft opening' intended for tourists who cant stay in this cold december weather in Europea n America. Apparently many of the major stores aren't due to open until way into next year. Traffic is going to be horrendous as Access 1 is still shut ans virtually all traffic into that area has to go on one road.

I don't like all these aquariums that are opening there (Dubai Mall, Atlantis, the Dolphins at the Creek etc) as they seem to have too many larger species that I just don't think should be in captivity. I know there is much talk of good care and numerous vets, but it just isn't right. And we all know that Dubai doesn't really care as long as something brings in tourist and visitors keen to spend money.

Seriously, having lived there, fact of the matter is that Dubai is a fairly boring place after two or so days. An afternoon in Deira's gold souk,(which was my favorite part of Dubai coz its still real) a morning at a mall, an afternoon at the beach, and you've seen what Dubai has to offer. I wonder why folks bother going back! At least Las Vegas has gambling.

Which is why Dubai feels the keen pressure to keep building more extravagant hotels and malls and resorts-that's the only way they can keep the tourism industry viable.

Re: Dubai Inc

Do they have many Oracle DBA jobs there?

To be honest there are shit loads of IT jobs there. I would suggest dealing with US or UK job agencies because they will make standards equivalent to the UK - you don't want those local HRs to create your salary packages.

There are a quite a few Civil / Architect consultancies there in Dubai (UK / Canadian / Australian / US) and I am sure that demand for the right people is still there (it always will be for the right people anyway). Abu Dhabi should be even more robust. I think they will be building at least for the next 10 years full time before any slow down ... just a non-educated guess.

For those in Accounting ... word of advice you do have a competition from cheaper labour countries but it shouldn't discourage you that much ... if havent been successful at getting job interviews then you may even think of running your own small consultancy from there.

There are a quite a few small business in Dubai for example and most could be supproted with a part time accountant; not everyone has capabilities to employ a full time accountant. So having 20-30 clients and supporting them for a day or two each - USD 500-1000 is nothing to anyone, 25 days at $500-1000 makes a niced little salary. Again there are quite a few of those who would charge less so you should try to provide some competitive services .. it's just an idea which you may have in the background.

Good network should land you a few customers...all in all theoretically, targeting companies directly will be much easier and will save them agency fees which will make you more attractive. However, you can't easily reach the hiring managers by applying directly to the company. Your application may go to HR but it may not be passed to the managers. Agency will contact the hiring managers directly which may be efficieint in some situations, so try both ways.

Good luck

Re: Dubai Inc

I know Dubai is trying to woo Eurpoean and American companies. What's the job market like?

One major thing im learned about Dubai is you can can save money. Went there when i was single for both professional expertise and to save money.

Dubai is a great place to gain experience within your field. You will move up the ladder at a quicker pace than at home, gain exposure to greater levels of responsibility at a younger age, and depending on your field (architecture/planning is really hot there), the opportunities to exercise your skills are extensive.

The work there is genuinely creative and I could see a project go from the drawing board to completion in two years or less, whereas back in the States or even UK it would be years and years.

Then take the newfound experiences and return home to a better job!

Saving money is definitely possible, for it's all about the lifestyle you want. I liveD in a shared villa (Now they are cracking down this thing), I used to drive drive Toyota VX(Amazon), eat out a few times a week, traveled, and I saved half my income.

Now, if you want your own place (not shared), spend money at the malls every week, hit the glamour restaurants and bars three-four nights a week, then you'll find that Dubai is indeed very expensive.

As it is, the two groups of people who save money in Duba are:

1) the very highly paid, with lavish housing allowances and school fees for their kids, and

2) the young singles who live modestly (but still nicely, after all, I had maid service and a gardener at my villa) and sock away a good chunk of their income.

One warning, however, I really didn't start saving money until I had been here for four or five months. The outlay to set up life in Dubai is a bit high.

Ohh your QN on job market...depends n what area you are in///mind expanding abit on that part?

Re: Dubai Inc

I'm going to ask the question that's prolly on everyone's mind but no one had asked yet.

What's Dubai like for young professional brothers & sistas?

I mean, it's bad enough they don't warm up to Americans in general out there but what about us?

I ask in an objective manner and hope your response(s) will be too.

First of all you got to understand that in Dubai there are big TYMERS in terms of MNCs are the Big Boys. So you will not get through to the people who matter by calling some random number - unless you are astoundingly talented.

The Big Boys do not have time to answer calls from random jobseekers or sift through the hundreds of CVs that they are sent/faxed/emailed every week.

They get a secretary to have a quick look and shortlist the best 5-10% (those with no spelling/grammatical mistakes, the right experience, a few interesting projects or an unusual educational/career path) who then get 30 seconds (no joke, if you're lucky!) to make an impact. Don't put anything too ridiculous in your "perosnal interests", cos the laughter distracts us from our work.

If you really want a job out there, it takes about 20 seconds to google "IT recruitment agencies". You should have already done that. No, really. Like now.

Welcome to corporate IT!

WORD OF ADVICE:

Do some research into the major construction companies out there, a few projects, more importantly the masterplanned projects in the pipeline.

Whatever you do don't get all bunny-in-the-headlights and mumble something about how well fabulous it all is, cos it ain't. It's ego architecture there. The bigger and better the erection, the happier the client is!

good luck

Re: Dubai Inc

Today I heard some Executive Directors discussing how now for the first time Dubai is letting go of people, before they couldn't get enough people. So choose wisely.

Re: Dubai Inc

yeah but you gotta go through shit at the airport

i'm used to that:hmm: i got to trinidad once a year to visit family, and i get LOTS of shit because of my name. i mean it literally takes me 30-45 minutes to get my ticket... so fuck arriving 1-2 hours early... i'm usually at the airport 3.5 hours before my scheduled flight :hmm:... i still wanna do an african and mid-eastern tour... i gotta re-up my passport next week too.

Re: Dubai Inc

They have a thing for westerners

UK/USA come first then others follow
Most African Americans I''ve met sadly are military fam so you dont see much of them in corporate world where whites seem to have colonised

That said in Saudi Arabia its a totally different ball game

Re: Dubai Inc

any strip clubs or hookers standing under street lights? Also how is the weed market?

Re: Dubai Inc

I'm not endorsing any of these companies, nothing beats doing your own research, no guarantee that they are up to date and current,

Oh, advice, to be blunt, to be taken seriously for any work, especially the recruitment agencies, you have to be in the country to meet the people otherwise you have little chance of being taken seriously or really being considered.

Things to look out for, having to pay signing on fees in advance, or anything you wouldn't expect to do at home, just be wary, as they often get a commission from the company that they place you with, so it would be odd for you to pay first, and if there getting paid first, it would indicate that they might not care for your after service.

Agencies that have been pointed out to be wary of, but by no means have necessary done anything wrong are:
