Working and Living abroad thread

Re: Dubai Inc

Dubai crashed recently. Try China, bruh

i saw on the africa channel cable of how africans are learning to speak business chinese not sure it might be most likely the Mandarin language for business purposes.Well if you really want to work abroad go wherever your skill takes you be open minded and some places will be more rugged than others act accordingly. www.blackexpat.com

Anyone worked in Perth,Austraila? One of my boys has just received an offer from IBM to go work there

I've only been in Perth a few months but I can give you my observations.it a great place to live, in terms of quality of life in general and things to do (I was kinda into the beach and water sports -- there is plenty of water bodies there, the river, lakes and obviously the Indian ocean.)

Some of the few issues I found there was that everything seems quite expensive (on the other hand salaries seem to be higher also), even paying top dollar most shops close early during the week and on Sundays, and it is far from everywhere, including other places in Australia. For instance to go to Sydney it is about $500 return and a 5h flight, which is a bit of stretch for a weekend trip (as an example).

I used to travel quite a bit in Europe (weekends and long weekends) in a regular basis (every 3 weeks or so) and I found it quite frustrating, you need to take a week holiday and plan 6 months ahead and get finance to do it If you live in the east coast, you can get to the other capital cities at a fraction of the cost/time (except Perth of course!)

TV is crap there too (I mean Foxtel, compared to Sky in the UK or HBO in the States) but I guess it is the same all over Australia...

We had a thread about Australia sometimes back

why would anyone in his rightful mind want to migrate to England?

that said, i think Europe as a whole is far more better than US

What about Turkey? or Eastern Europe?

I hear Turkey is booming as of late. Istanbul has the 5th largest GDP of the major European cities. Not sure Eastern Europe has much to offer. Many of their citizens badly want to leave their home countries to work in Western Europe/USA. But then again, it depends on what you can bring skills wise to their arena.

Just a place to live. My job is in Africa/Middle east region so I spend a lot of time there. I saw Istanbul on a couple of TV shows and saw what 2 bedroom places are going for and was thinking about living there for a year or two.

What do you do for a living? And how would someone go about working in Africa? Did you just contact mulit-nationals who do work in the region or did you just transfer to the region after working in America for a period of time?

about working in china..just imagine having to be the caretaker of any of those
"ghost cities", living out there all alone and such

Sorry I never answered you man.

I'm an ROV supervisor and I work offshore/onshore shipyards on drill ships, boats and Oil Rigs.

Right now shit is booming. A qualified cat can break in at 450-600 a day as a technician. Shit is booming so much now i might even leave my spot cause the other companies are offering way too much cash now. Angola/Ghana and west Africa are booming right now and there is a lack of qualified personnel.

My homie said that guys with my experience can pull in up to a grand a day.:yes: Gotta check into that before I make a move cause I'm really happy at my current company.

my dude, I was JUST about to PM you about my old post from last year. Well, better late than never. I appreciate you taking the time to answer man. I am searching everday for new opportunities working overseas. Gotta put some of these language skills to use.

BTW, does one need exact oil and gas experience to get started in the oil and gas field? I have engineering and project mgmt background but it is in operations for general contracting. Are they looking for entry level people in that field in Africa?

You know what, I just need to do some more research. Thanks again for the reply.

pretty much any of your skills will translate. Hell, I was a recording/sound engineer for years and I didn't have a problem converting those skills into the field I am in now.

I tell everyone to check rigzone.com for a start. They list a lot of companies that are hiring, and all you need to do is match your skills up with the jobs listed.

They need people from deck hands/roustabouts to drillers, geologist, sub sea engineers, mechanical and electrical engineers to project management. Fuck if you can weld, drive a fork lift or run a crane you can get a job offshore or in the oil business right now.

The dude I'm training is a local Angolan, and his math skills are probably at 5th grade us. Maybe. And I'm just trying to tech him basic transformer theory and how Ohms law works so he doesn't kill himself when we have to test gear. :smh:

I'll find the Chevron/BP job sites for Angola when I have a chance. Cats that work for them directly fly charter straight to Angola from Houston. I've been on the flight a few times and it's way better than the way I travel.

Re: Dubai Inc

Wait a second you racist backwords thinking hicks!!!!! Dubai has low to know taxes!!!!!!!!!! What the fuck is the matter with you!!!!!!!! Why the fuck would you start a business in a place with no taxes when you can start a business in Obamas America!!!! HE will tax the shit out of you (Especially if you're business succeeds and you manage to make some money!) and you will smile or he will arrest you're ass. So todays lesson is don't start businesses in places that are good for business, but instead start them in America where they will Tax you're ass for being successfull cuting you're profit margin and you're willing ness to keep jobs in the Country... Wait a fucking minute??????? Could high taxes be the reason that jobs Go ofshore.... No fucking way!!!!!!!!!!

:hmm:
so obama is the reason jobs are leaving the US? right, that all just started in the last 4 years, not the last 20 years? FOH.
companies go to Mexico, China, Korea, etc. to access CHEAP LABOR RATES, that's the real issue. that, and goverment subsidized businesses, that have an unfair advantage.

What did you do in the military? If you were a mechanic or did anything with hydraulics your skill will transfer to ROV.

DTS division is tooling. Subsea tools from intervention skids to brushes used to clean wellheads to cutting tools.

IWOCS division is coiled tubing

OPG division are the guys that handle lifting and crane operations plus they oversee the projects.

If you have military experience they will like that. They know that you can handle the 4-6 weeks away from home without having a meltdown.

Maybe HSE? They don't do shit but paperwork and snitch on people not using PPE.:lol:

Plus they can make good money too. No heavy lifting and you will have an office or at least your own desk when you are offshore.

I was an engineman and I have worked with hydraulics, ac and refer, potable water, etc......although this was a while ago...I am guessing they would provide training for this or do i need to take some test ahead of time and come in shit hot

it seems they are looking for a specific type of experience in these field thats not really the same as what I did in the navy

the oceanaire site doesnt load the job openings correctly but the rigzone does

- Drilling Engineering 22 jobs - Petroleum Engineering 22 jobs
- Geophysicist 20 jobs - Geologist 19 jobs
- Geoscientist 18 jobs - Mechanical Engineering 17 jobs
- Project Management 16 jobs - Operations Manager 14 jobs
- Design Engineer 14 jobs - Subsea Engineering 13 jobs
- Driller 13 jobs - Drilling Superintendent 12 jobs
- Project Engineer 11 jobs - Process Engineer 10 jobs

this is just in the uk but they have the most jobs so i thought something would pop up
