The Director of Business Communications will direct and implement innovative public relations strategies geared toward building excitement and intense interest for the Houston Rockets and Toyota Center. The selected individual will work closely with local, regional and national print and broadcast media to generate coverage throughout the year. He or she will also focus on creating and promoting select community relations activities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES include the following (Other duties may be assigned to meet business needs):
• Oversee the development and implementation of all organizational, business-side public relations initiatives for the Houston Rockets and Toyota Center.
• Develop short-term and long-term strategic plans for the Business Communications Department which further the business goals of the organization and enhance the organization’s profile.
• Consistently work to increase and strengthen relationships with local, regional and national business, society and community related media.
• Develop press releases, promotional materials and on-line press announcements highlighting the business-side of the organization and its events.
• Create promotional and media opportunities in conjunction with corporate, suite and ticket sales to further the sales efforts of the organization.
• Create opportunities and assist with media support when needed for corporate partner recognition and activities.
• Possess and nurture on-going relationships with key city officials and representatives of the business community.
• Represent the organization in appropriate media-related, business and community organizations.
• Collaborate with the marketing and media relations departments to manage announcements, editorial placements, and speaking opportunities.
• Develop and oversee various community relations activities as determined by the organization.
• Escort and entertain media as necessary on game nights and for Toyota Center events and activities.
• Work with media relations department in order to secure players, coaches, management and/or necessary staff participation in media-related events.
• Assist with and generate media coverage for Rockets and Toyota special events when needed.
• Research issues, causes and initiatives related to the public image of the organization and provide communications counsel to upper management regarding sensitive or timely public relations issues.
• Research and champion new public relations technologies and trends in order to gain every opportunity to reach all appropriate audiences.
• Create and maintain system of tracking and archiving all public relations coverage.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bachelors degree in Communications, Journalism, or Public Relations with a minimum of 10 years public relations and management experience.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Strong existing relationships with local business, community and social media.
• Creative and proactive ability to encourage positive stories and features on the players in the community, the facility, concerts, events, etc. while reinforcing the overall marketing message of the organization.
• Proven knowledge of all public relations practices including, writing, strategic decision-making, integration broadcast mediums, measurement, placement, story-pitching and dissemination.
• Proven track record in results-driven media relations assignments, including media placement and crisis management.
• Ability to present and negotiate terms and conditions of community programs with involved parties.
• Ability to generate story ideas enthusiasm and interest in games, events and concerts.
• Very high level of professionalism and strong presentation skills.
• Experience in speech writing and strong editorial relationships are an advantage.
• Proven ability to manage a team and organize individual and multiple projects simultaneously.
• Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and evenings, as required.
