Manager of Public and Community Relations - Houston Comets (Houston, TX)
DEPARTMENT: Comets Business Operations
REPORTS TO: COO Comets Business Operations
This position will lead all press, media and community relations efforts for the Houston Comets with the primary focus on creating and implementing a PR/visibility plan that generates broad awareness of the franchise plus our key messages and demonstrates the team’s dedication and involvement in the community. The goal of these efforts is to build a large loyal fan base with high levels of customer satisfaction.
RESPONSIBILITIES include but are not limited to:
Public Relations:
Develop and implement a PR plan that creates news about the franchise to build awareness, fan excitement and communicate key strategic messages.
Target different stories to various relevant markets such as sports, women’s leadership, businesses, and civic involvement groups.
Build productive, collaborative relationships with the key media influencers who can assist in supporting and endorsing the efforts of the team.
Respond swiftly and strategically to all media requests while working to integrate our key messages.
Plan and implement all press conferences and events designed to generate media visibility.
Write press releases and speeches for key leadership.
Media Relations:
Coordinate the press/media coverage for all games: pre, during, and post in compliance with the WNBA League Operations Manual including being present at all home games to manage information needs and key messages.
Collaborate with cable and broadcast partners to air the game for maximum exposure/presence.
Manage the away game press/media coverage and team needs per the WNBA League Operations Manual.
Create media guides, write media material and handle all inquiries.
Community Relations:
Develop and implement a community relations plan that demonstrates the team’s dedication to the community in ways that are relevant to the fans and the brand.
Give back to the community in the most effective and efficient manner to build supportive, involved relationships for the team while doing “good” for the community and business.
Conduct media training and preparation for players and coaches regarding key messages. All employees are spokes-people for our team.
Manage/Lead:
Train, guide, and lead the media/community relations coordinator.
Collaborate with all functional teams to create a respectful, results oriented, can do culture.
Be open and approachable to new ideas.
Perform all other duties as requested.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelors degree required
Media and Community Relations experience
3+ Years of Houston experience preferred
WNBA and Non-profit experience a plus
Strong managerial and leadership skills
Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
Ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize goals
High level of computer literacy
