<SCRIPT src="/js/13260191/script.js" type=text/javascript></SCRIPT><LINK href="/css/13260803/style.css" type=text/css rel=stylesheet><!--startindex-->GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -- Dozens of Gwinnett County residents will be voicing their concerns about porn on library computers. They say the county isn’t doing enough to block sexually explicit material and protect their children.

During Ruth Hardy’s last trip to the Collins Hill branch library she got more than just books. She got mad at what she saw a man watching on his computer. “It looked like she was having sex there on the computer screen,” said Hardy.

Hardy said a 10-year-old was sitting next to the man watching pornography. Now, Hardy and several other Gwinnett County residents are asking the library’s board to strengthen their filters and have the staff intervene.

“It angers me. I’m paying for that. The rest of the county is paying for that as well. I consider it a G-rated place, a kid-friendly place,” said Hardy.

Library officials said their filter system can’t block everything because users can go to an acceptable site then go to a link. Channel 2 was told library staff is not allowed to intervene when they see what may be sexually explicit pictures or video on library computers.

“We have over 200 people in branches who are responsible for customer service and as you can imagine, you might have a different opinion what’s objectionable that I do, so we have chosen not to put our staff in that position,” said Rhonda Boyd with the Gwinnett County Public Library.

Library officials said they’ve taken all the necessary precautions and cannot control what a child may see.

"Parents, if you're concerned about what your children see in the library, not just on the Internet or what they do in the library, the library's a public place. And so we do have to ask parents to take some responsibility,” said Boyd.

"I feel like Gwinnett has not taken that step at all to protect the children and they are hiding behind their policy,” said Hardy.

Hardy wants Gwinnett County to require written parental permission or adult supervision for children to use the Internet like other counties do. Libary officials said they are always trying to find a balance between constitutionally protected material and protecting children.

I feel the Libraries should take some responsibility in this and set up the PC’s with some form of privacy. If it is open to the web without any restrictions then they should have some type of booth.

I think it should be banned with software put in place to keep it out as much as possible and if anyone is caught they should be banned permanently. the library is not the place for chillin' and watching porn. Students need those computers for legitimate needs.

My issue is that kids are generally in the library. When I go to look at books, I'm at a bookstore.

So I wouldn't want my child to see some action shot and say "Hey, mommy. What are they doing?" :smh:

I know, just as many businesses and offices, ban certain websites, etc. from being seen or used at work, the same should apply for the library. There aren't any pornography sections of the library, so why should there be free range to look at pornography on the world wide web? True enough, banning many of the websites will be easy to ban, but others will be hard (as new ones pop up all the time).

However, this would blow up in the library's face if a kid were to "unexpectantly" come across this while browsing the web...

What do you mean by young?

Do you think a 9 or 10 year old should know what sexual activity is like? Even in it's just in pictorials?

All they need is that security software... On a side note, that librarian probably needs to get laid

we all did when i was coming up. either we saw people doing it by accident or older people tried to seduce us or everyone had some friend who found their dads stash of magazines or we would get on the cable porn. we thought it was funny actually and kinda gross. some kids were fucking already before 9 and 10.

i know i saw/knew way too much by 9 or 10 but at least i could go to the local library and not have to see/hear it. the library should definately be off limits. why would you wanna watch it in there anyway... unless something is wrong with you:

1) you can't "enjoy" it
2)no sound (i hope)
3) feeling like you gotta be watching who is watching you instead of keeping ya eyes on the scene

they should institute a no porn rule, get the software blockers, get the library staff to grow a pair... and keep the library G rated.

Femme.... Let me shed another perspective on this...

I was at GSU library one day using there internet.... sittin right next to me was a black guy giggling and lookin at "gay" porn. It royally pissed me off. And the asshole actually got an attitude with me when I told him to turn that shit off.

There is a time and place for everything.... public internet viewing of porn material should definitely be banned.... I don't wanna know that much about anybody and their personal proclivities

I agree. That's wrong. This needs to be done in private. Not at a public library. :smh:
