WNBA Projected To Lose $50 Million Despite ‘The Caitlin Clark Effect’ And The League Being More Popular

But but but Caitlyn.

Folks that have 100-500 bucks to blow on basketball are gonna blow on the NBA, if they have the choice.

Spend 500 at Hawks game
Spend 500 at Atlanta Dream game

I'd Spend it at a Skyhawks G League game before a Dream game. I'd see guys that are trying to make an NBA roster and probably be sitting courtside with food and drinks.

Unrivaled announces $340M valuation after inaugural season

  • Kendra AndrewsSep 8, 2025, 08:26 AM ET

Just seven months after the conclusion of its inaugural season, Unrivaled said it has been valued at $340 million.

This valuation comes at the close of a Series B investment round led by Bessemer Venture Partners and also includes investments from Serena Williams' venture capital company Serena Ventures, Warner Bros. Discovery and Trybe Ventures.

Unrivaled president Alex Bazzell said the valuation was negotiated with Bessemer Venture Partners.

This valuation and additional funding "expedite [Unrivaled's] growth strategy," Bazzell told ESPN. "Because we outperformed our revenue expectations in season one by almost doubling it, it allows us to move a bit quicker. ... It's become a three-year roadmap [instead of five]. In year two, we are really going to double down on the athletes."

Unrivaled will use some of the funds to increase the venue space it has in Miami -- adding 15,000 square feet for player facilities -- including a second practice court -- and 150 seats to the game arena.

The average salary of players will remain at six figures. Last season, players earned an estimated average salary of $222,222, and all received equity in the league. Moving forward, select athletes who join the league will also receive equity, but this will be decided on a case-by-case scenario as contracts are negotiated.

"They are largely majority shareholders," Bazzell said of the players. "They are going to reap the benefits of these growing valuations, not just, 'oh, congrats, good job,' and 'you'll get better resources.' Our whole brand ethos is coming into effect and improving itself in a short amount of time."

This round of funding also received investments from NBA players Trae Young, Franz Wagner and Moritz Wagner, sports executive Sam Rapoport and University of Maryland president Darryll J. Pines.

Investors for Unrivaled's inaugural season included Giannis Antetokounmpo, Carmelo Anthony, Stephen Curry, Geno Auriemma, Coco Gauff, Dawn Staley and Michael Phelps.

Unrivaled made approximately $30 million in revenue its first season, a league source told ESPN, which is double what league officials had projected. The league's multiyear media rights deal with TNT and its corporate sponsorships, which include Sephora, Ally and Under Armour, likely account for most of that number.

Unrivaled's front office members also said ticket and merchandise sales were strong.

After raising $35 million in funding through investors and funding seeds before the season tipped off, Unrivaled nearly broke even in its inaugural season and is projected to turn a profit in its second year, a source told ESPN.

The league averaged 221,000 viewers on TNT and truTV during its first season, with the championship game between the Rose and Vinyl drawing 364,000 viewers. Last season, the WNBA averaged at least 1 million viewers in a record 22 regular-season games on ESPN. WNBA games on ION averaged 670,000 viewers in 2024, up 133% from the previous season.

Unrivaled is worth more than the WNBA after 1 season.

That is pure comedy but goes to show how poorly run the WNBA is.

Like I predicted once Caitlin Clark debuted, lockout coming and Englert is out of there.

Napheesa Collier blasts WNBA's Engelbert: 'Worst leadership'

Myron MedcalfSep 30, 2025, 04:52 PM ET

MINNEAPOLIS -- Minnesota Lynx star Napheesa Collier blasted WNBA leadership in her exit interview Tuesday, accusing league commissioner Cathy Engelbert of being "negligent" in her governance.

Collier said the league has failed to sufficiently address issues with officiating, compensation for players and the state of the overall product. She also alleged that Engelbert told her in a private conversation that superstar Caitlin Clark and other young standouts "should be on their knees" in gratitude for the platform the league has given them.

"Our leadership's answer to being held accountable is to suppress everyone's voices by handing out fines," Collier said. "I'm not concerned about a fine, I'm concerned about the future of our sport. At some point, everyone deserves to hear the truth from someone who I hope has earned the benefit of the doubt to fight for what is right and fair for our athletes and our fans.

I'm wondering if the league is finally making a profit?

My son was trying to argue me down about how they deserve to make more money.
They have a new TV deal (I think), plus they have been playing to larger crowds.
That still doesn't mean you are in the black. There are a lot of expenses involved in running a team.

Nope, they lost money this year too but the issue is Cathy Englert and her team.

Unrivaled being valued about half of the WNBA after 1 year is the leverage play as the top women’s players all play for that league. They will just end up playing in that league and the WNBA would be forced to fold.

It is crazy that it is still around this long after never having a profitable year. The epitome of a charity league.

City Council approves contract extension, unveils $48.6M Dallas Wings practice facility renderings

The Dallas City Council voted in favor of authorizing the services agreement with McKissack & McKissack, Inc. for the one year contract extension for the completion of the Dallas Memorial Arena.

The construction of the secondary facility was originally going to be a part of or adjacent to the current Dallas Memorial Auditorium (Arena). However, due to ongoing negotiations with FIFA at the time to finalize the location for FIFA’s International Broadcast Center, the practice facility was moved to Oak Cliff, director of Dallas Convention and Event Services Rosa Fleming said during a council committee meeting Tuesday afternoon.

During that meeting, Fleming presented the need to update the scope of the agreement with McKissack to extend the services for the arena. Previously the facility was expected to be completed by 2026.

“The Wings agreed and that was always an option in their original contract to extend the year, so we did extend the year,” Fleming said.

Earlier this month, the council voted in favor of rezoning part of the Joey Georgusis Park to accommodate the then estimated $55 million practice facility. The practice facility is now expected to cost $48.6 million.

Now that the new location has been finalized and due to McKissack having involvement with the project since February 2024, it was presented to the council to continue their partnership with the project management group because of their experience and expertise on the project. Additionally, Gensler was brought on for design in June following the decision to move the practice facility to West Oak Cliff.

“They did some early design work. They brought it, what Gensler inherited once we provided was something that had been and was being worked on by the McKissack team and will be continued on by the McKissack team. So they’re working in coordination.”

In addition to discussing the agreement with McKissack at yesterday’s meeting, Gensler’s Pheba Thomas, the design architect and architect of record for the project, presented the advanced schematic drawings of the practice facility at the new location.

The design will now use a pre-engineered metal building to make it faster and cheaper to erect the space rather than the traditional built in place steel structure originally proposed, she said.

The project has two components to allow for public use of the facility as well.

“The site is organized based on the community access to the site, as well as the player access to the site,” Thomas said.

The community component will include the south side with a public lobby, meetings rooms, flexible meeting rooms and locker facilities.

“The intention of the space is for planned activities, community events, youth clinics, educational programs hosted by both the Wings, as well as the City and the park and trail,” Thomas said.

The larger mass in the middle holds the athletic facilities, such as courts, strength and recovery training facilities, coaching, and basketball ops. There are also dining facilities and dedicated player and staff entry to the space on the north side of the project site.

The breakdown of the funding for the project includes five sources, including $3.1 million from the Dallas Wings.

The Convention Center Capital Construction Fund is about $25 million, the Economic Development Funding is about $10 million, the Dallas Wings will contribute $3.1 million and private funds will add another $10 million, Fleming said. She added that the State Funding covers the closing funding of the project.

“It’s purposeful in its organization,” Thomas said. “An it is really just meeting the needs and giving them a state of the art facility, but also making sure that we are being mindful of the city’s funds and budgets.”

The practice facility is expected to be open in Fall of 2026, with the official ground breaking Friday, Sept. 26 at 10 a.m.

Joey Georgusis Park is located at 1200 Stone Mesa Drive.
