Sup Everyone? I am trying to load a copy of Windows 7 onto my new SSD and wanted to know if I could just run the ISO and use my produce key, or do I have to wipe my HDD first? I'm only going to use it for storage space now. Do I HAVE to wipe it or can I leave Windows 7 on it anyway? Any info would be appreciated.
 
For me to get windows 7 I have to install my bootleg XP CD. Then I upgrade to Vista by running an ISO. Then I upgrade with my Win 7 CD. My win 7 CD is not an ISO, but for some reason I can't load it via stand alone. I got all of these from kickasstorrents. Hope this helped.

I had a hell of a time getting windows updates to work when I had to reload my system. If you run into any problems let me know and I will see if I still have the updates I had to do first before the others would work..

You don't have to wipe it your storage drive, just don't physically install until you boot up Windows. If you install Windows again, the Windows on the storage drive will show up on a Windows selection screen when you boot your cpu.

Thank you. I didn't do anything but remove it. I'm going to remove my CD/DVD drive and out the HDD in that slot.

Would it be worthit at all to upgrade to 10? I'm using the old Sandy Bridge chipset, but I've upgraded every other spec that I could. Also, 7 feels ancient...even though I still LOVE it and they'll be supporting it until 2020. I just don't know if there are enough advantages unless one of you can't point some more out to me. I'm willing to change but only if it makes sense.

You don't have to wipe your HD. When you install Windows7 it will keep your previous install in a folder called Windows Old on your C drive that way you can retrieve files and programs from the previous installation. When you have gotten what you want you can delete the Windows Old folder and get back all that space.

It takes a while to get the updates indeed. I suspect Microsoft is doing that discourage users of Win7. The best thing to do is set your updates to only allow Windows Updates. No "Recommended Updates" or one day you will find Win10 installed. Make sure you have it set to inform you of updates and let you chose when to install them. Here is a screen shot I keep on my phone for when I am out and about working on systems. Make sure to uninstall the updates below as some are spyware while others are push service for Win10. If they have not been installed and you see among available updates right click on them and select "HIDE". I can't find the link to the original thread I got the info from since I cleared my history but it's great to know. Also I have copies of Windows 7 Ultimate 32/64 with an activator if anyone needs it.

I have Win10 and have no problems with it, it boots faster into Windows then it does for my BIOS to run on startup. I have Ivy Bridge and I was always working with incomplete drivers with Windows 7. Gaming there can be a noticeable difference.

Do you know how 10 plays with Sandy Bridge? That's what I'm running and I've read that 10 has problems with that chipset. Do you know if there's any truth to that?

I haven't heard anything bad about Sandy Bridge and 10. I was actually thinking about upgrading to a Sandy Bridge i7. I'll ask around though.

Thank you, JtheKing. I'm running an i5 Sandy Bridge and it performs flawlessly. Of course, I also maxed out at 16GB of RAM running on a Samsung EVO.

Yeah, it really is Microsoft's best effort and, go figure, it came after they listened to their customers. Then they went back to being Microsoft and delivered operating systems that were extremely flawed and missing good functionality when released. With that said, I am running 10 on my desktop and I like it. It does seem to be more efficient than 7 in many ways. And on similar specs, I think it proves in many ways to be the superior system now, if only because 7 is a bit dated now obviously. I will run 7 on my laptop until 2020. I like 10 enough to keep it running on the desktop. In fact, I plan on doing a clean install once my SSD arrives.
 
Anyone missing any Windows 7 updates can get every update for 7 at Microsoft's Update Catalog. The only hitch is you'll have to use IE the site uses Active-X.

I dual boot windows 7 and 10

I have them on separate hard drives.

Windows 10 is my entertainment OS (games, netflix, tv-tuner etc)

Windows 7 is my "personal" OS. Anything that I would like more discretion on or for software productivity, I use my windows 7 OS.

One huge drawback of windows 7 is that it does not scale well with 4k.

Other than that....it's nice.

I have a devil's canyon i7.
 
Im listening and nobody is talking about win10 and how extensively the spying is with that os. i only mess with win7 Period. No matter what the original os, I always wipe and reload win7 on it, do all the updates and then run a win10 spyware remover to get rid of the fuckery spying updates that come down. Once i've done this, i shut off all updates and let the system run without ever doing updates again. No need to keep those bullshit win10 updates when they do more spying on yall. Been doing this a few years and havent had a problem yet.

I run win7 but for real privacy you should run Ubuntu off a fast 100 MB/s+ usb 3.0 flash drive through a usb 3.0 port.
