Microsoft is officially unveiling the name for the next release of Windows today: Windows 10. While the software maker had referred to Windows 10 as codename Windows Threshold internally, today’s official naming puts any rumors of Windows, Windows TH, Windows X, Windows One, and even Windows 9 to bed. It’s simply Windows 10, marking a jump from the mixed reception of Windows 8.

Described as Microsoft's "most comprehensive platform ever," Windows 10 will offer a tailored experience for all hardware across a single platform family. And it turns out that's intentional. Microsoft's Joe Belfiore pointed to the millions of customers still using Windows 7, and said the company wants to make their transition to Windows 10 much more comfortable than the unfamiliar leap to Windows 8 two years ago. "We want all these Windows 7 users to have the sentiment that yesterday they were driving a first-generation Prius, and now with Windows 10 it's like a Tesla."

"Windows 10 will deliver the right experience on the right device at the right time," said Microsoft's Terry Myerson. "Windows 10 will run on the broadest types of devices ever." You can expect a unique user interface depending on what you're running Windows on; images shown at the event line up with leaks that have surfaced in recent weeks. It's basically a combination of Windows 7 and 8 that borrows design elements from each of Microsoft's two most recent operating systems.

The "Metro" start screen and Microsoft's traditional Start Menu have been combined; no longer is the screen one huge grid of tiles for desktop users. "The tiles and icons that are shown are a blend of classic apps and new universal apps," Belfiore said. But Live Tiles are still here and can be resized to a user's preference. More than anything else, Microsoft is working to make everything feel way more cohesive. "In Windows 8 when users launched a modern app, it sort of had a different environment," Belfiore said. "We don't want that duality. We want users on PCs with mice and keyboards to have their familiar UI." There's also a new universal search in the start menu that pulls in results from the web.

Proper start menu back

Launching into that live tiles shit is the worst. Clunky as hell. I almost never go into the live tiles start menu/app launcher.

Looks pretty good, can't wait to give it a test run. Glad, it's a free upgrade for Win 8 users. Tech preview build released tomorrow. Like how it can switch to a touchscreen OS, when the keyboard & mouse is removed and back to desktop OS, when it's reconnected. Look forward to see more features as well. Exciting times in tech, Apple should also have some nice features with their new OS as well.

usually microsoft gets it right every few OSs...Win95.....Win98......XP.....Win7.....
this one should be legit....cuz i refuse to use Windows 8 or 8.1

8.1 actually made shit WAAAAY better.

i hated 8, even though cats were like just get used to it but who wants to do that?

8.1 = problems solved.

I upgraded to 8.1 and it works better than 8. Don't sleep, MS really last fuck up was Vista and before that Windows 2000/ME. It takes time to get use to 8/8.1 if you are new to it. XP, 7, and 8 are fine in my book, Vista was the fuck up.

8.1 is really good, but I didn't have issues with 8 either, but that may have been because I was using Preview for a while and quickly learned about the Metro UI and desktop UI.
It's funny as hell peeps on the tech sites are more worried about the number, instead of the features..smh:lol:
Hell, no one said anything after Win95, Win98, Win98SE, Win2000, WinXP, Win Vista, back to Win7, Win 8...lmao! Shouldn't it be like Win 3000 or something?? Screw the numbers, just make sure the features are right and a smooth running OS.

This is the option that should've existed in Windows 8.

not for me 8.1 and 8 is pure shit on my laptop with top specs(core i7) and ram(12G) , 10 might stop me from gettin a mac cause if it wasnt a free upgrade from 8 , i was getting a mac, or if its shit like 8 , its mac time for me

then u are doing something wrong.

So they're still relying heavy on the touch screen shit huh
They're relying on both touchscreen and non-touchscreen. It's the "Continuum" feature of the OS. If you're using a regular PC with no touchscreen, it will stay in regular PC mode. If you're using a hybrid PC(touchscreen), it will give you the option of switching to touchscreen mode when not using the keyboard & mouse. It will switch back to regular desktop PC mode, when using the keyboard/mouse.

What in the world are you running with those specs and not getting good performance? Damn, I only have 4GB ram and it runs smooth as silk. Maybe the setup is really not right, but who knows.

idk all drivers are up to date virus protection trend micro ,malwarebytes, the works. i actually think its the hd, think its only 5400, shit is just slow for the specs it has, drivers crashing, audio drivers crashing and have to reboot, shit like that, other than that , the only os i really had problems with was ME , even vista didnt crash my drivers

Although the HDD is slow, still shouldn't cause any driver crashing like that. Got me bro, confusing right there. Unless, the different virus protections running in the background is slowing it down and causing conflicts with other stuff. I know I ran into that issue back in the day with XP, until finally I had to depend on one good Antivirus software, that wouldn't make my system unstable.
