What yall think about this? If Obama wins the presidency, will the issue of REPARATIONS be taken off the table? Whether you agree with it or not, I would want it debated on its merits instead of being EXCUSED AWAY if Obama wins. The EXCUSE would be: How can blacks want reparations when the mere fact that a Black man won the presidency PROVES that the US has moved past racism?

The argument doesn't hold water. Reparations is about REPAIRING shit from the past. Can't let (whatever progressive) shit in the present cloud our rights borne by the pain of the past.

We are still slaves the Declaration of independence of 1863 transferred the slaves from the landowners to the States! There will be no reparations ever ever... unless...The Stimulus Package!

The US government banned slavery and freed the slaves. There were no slaves under federal control and therefore the government has no liability. In fact, it waged war to force the end of slavery. If you want reparations, go to the state capitols of slave holding states and file a law suit that way.

Also, have you done everything you could do (obtain an education,etc) to ensure the suffering others went through was not for nothing?

Seems like 35-40 years of pro-minority government programs (including Affirmative Action) and business set-asides more than cover the "reparations" situation. Any black person with an ounce of ambition (and intelligence) can ride the government quite nicely right through school and into business. The opportunities are all there for the taking. Fist thing that needs to happen is to have an official killing off of the term "reparations". That term brings too much misunderstanding and negative connotations to go forward.

The term should be called the "American Fairness Act" or something patriotic. The only issue I see is that brothers have to be very careful...we will not be able to have it both ways. We can't "receive" reparations in any form and then still OPENLY complain about the playing field.

Whatever "reparation" will be given, it has to address the infrastructure of American racism and disfranchisement.

So it won't be a $ amount, more like a tax credit or forgiveness of federal educational loans. Both could address as much as possible the inequities of the American slave trade, but they can't cure racism. So as a people we will STILL have to form strong social bonds and heal within ourselves to properly give affect to the "reparations".
