Ta-Nehisi Coates will write a new Superman film for DC Films and Warner Bros.

The project is in very early development, but the new film is being produced by J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot. Hannah Minghella will also produce. There is no director attached to the project at this time and the search for an actor to play Kal-El / Superman has not yet begun.

“To be invited into the DC Extended Universe by Warner Bros., DC Films and Bad Robot is an honor,” Coates said in a statement. “I look forward to meaningfully adding to the legacy of America’s most iconic mythic hero.”

“There is a new, powerful and moving Superman story yet to be told. We couldn’t be more thrilled to be working with the brilliant Mr. Coates to help bring that story to the big screen, and we’re beyond thankful to the team at Warner Bros. for the opportunity,” Abrams stated.

Coates is the acclaimed author of bestsellers including “Between the World and Me,” “The Beautiful Struggle,” “We Were Eight Years in Power,” and “The Water Dancer.”

“Ta-Nehisi Coates’s ‘Between the World and Me’ opened a window and changed the way many of us see the world,” said Toby Emmerich, chairman of Warner Bros. Pictures Group. “We’re confident that his take on Superman will give fans a new and exciting way to see the Man of Steel.”

The new Superman project is not the author’s first foray into the superhero realm. Coates also wrote the Marvel comic book series for “Captain America” and “Black Panther,” with his run writing the latter saga ending in April.

News of Coates’ attachment to the superhero project comes amid a number of recent Hollywood projects and adaptations of the author’s work. “Between the World and Me” was adapted into an HBO film which debuted last November, while “The Water Dancer” is getting a big-screen adaptation from a producing team that includes Oprah Winfrey and Brad Pitt.

Shadow and Act was first to report the news.

If the next Superman is going to be Black, the casting team can pick from a lot of men, based on what we go through every day.

Me first, though.;)

"Black Superman...?"
He already exists in the DC Universe.

Fuck SJW "race swapping" an already existing character.
Why not simply just bring this guy to the big screen? :dunno:
Give us an established DC superhero actually CREATED BY A BLACK MAN, FOR BLACK PEOPLE...

no..he is a white dude....create a Black character that can match his power.....Write a good backstory.....

it's possible that coates could keep superman white, he wrote captain america with no major changes to the character.

I hope not, even though a black Superman already exisit on an alternate Earth.

Why can't they just use Icon? I've only seen him once and that was an animated appearance.

this is why DC keeps losing to Marvel. Marvel did 20+movies and tv shows and ALL of them tied together and had continuity and theys why people watched them and followed them. DC keeps doing stories all over the place, there are already too many Superman actors and know you gonna add another. We got Cavill in the movies, this new dude on CW tv show,Brandon Routh just played him again in Crisis and now this.

Marvel just got way more interesting characters. DC can't even get their popular ones done right

I don't know who that character is you posted, but guess what? Didn't know who Blade was until the movie. I agree 10000 percent with you. Bring out a new fucking character. The lack of originality is fucking frightening. :smh: Leave old characters as they were and create new ones OR use other comic characters like they did with Blade.

I enjoyed Luke Cage. We need more shit like that. Unoriginal asses can even reboot blade.

Krypton is a planet so unless everybody there are blue eyed honkies why can’t there be other Kryptonians of different looks? Including a “Black” alien? There’s no fucking rules that there’s only one fucking Alien from Krypton.

Buk ain't wrong...

what if they are thinking of doing Val Zod?

This could be good if done right. This Superman is unsure of himself, hates being around people, is a staunch passivist who believes in non-violence, and is the adopted son of General Zod.

Plus, he has genius intellect and is best friends with Kal-El's cousin, Power Girl aka Super Girl.
