Will submerging a hard drive in water destroy it?

I am getting rid of some old comps...just moving toward keeping laptops around...the big towers and desktops are just played out...anyway I want to completely destroy the hard drives on those old computers...will just putting that shit in a bucket of water or something totally erase destroy the hard drive...
