lol @ niggas making up mad scenarios to prove themselves right. Isn't it just easier to take Rakim's word for it and keep it moving?

RAKIM SITTIN BACK PROUD OF HIS LYRICS

eric-b-rakim.jpg
Not only did Rakim not ghostwrite the song, Jeff said the song wasn't ghostwritten at all. He said Will was the sole author.

http://www.imisstheoldschool.com/archives/jazzy-jeff-talks-summertime/

One thing that Townes had to set the record straight about was a long-held rumor that Rakim had ghostwritten Smith’s lyrics on the song. But, as Townes explained, Smith was the sole author.

It’s just that the group was at a tricky point in their rap career just before the record dropped, having had lots of crossover success with songs like Parents Just Don’t Understand. Their cred among hip-hop purists was waning.

Townes told Smith to not add his name to the beginning of the song in order for rap fans not to dismiss it immediately as a pop tune. Instead, he instructed Smith to use another approach.

‘Will was always very hyper and I told him, “Bring it back. Vibe with it,”‘ Townes said. ‘And when he did that, everyone was like, “Wow. He sounds like Rakim.” From the first day we played the record for people, they thought it was Rakim. When we first released it, everyone was like, “Did you hear that new song that Rakim did?”‘

fam if ur talkin about me, i dont have a dog in this fight.

but if ra was a ghostwriter on that track, why would he say he wrote it?

and the look on flavs face cant be taken lightly. that is all...

that's adding a scenario. All we can do is go with what we know. Rakim said he didn't pen it. Jazzy Jeff said Rakim didn't pen it. It's not like the song is on some lyrically beast mode shit. Sounds like Will borrowed Ra's flow and penned the track. It's no doubt Rakim's flow. Even Rakim said that shit.

With regards to Flav, if he wasn't there when/if Rakim wrote it, he is just doing what you're doing... going with what he thinks and/or believing the rumors.

We can ask, "what ifs" and "whys" all day with this song, but all we can do on some real shit is go with what everyone, including RAKIM, said.

Re: Will Smith shows up David Latterman's show but the Fresh Prince makes an appearan

I don't think Ra wrote the song

Will just took his style and candance and went with it

You ninjas listen to Action Bronson and thought it was ghost face until you saw what Action looked like

Re: Will Smith shows up David Latterman's show but the Fresh Prince makes an appearan

Are you fuckin kidding? NOBODY gives the ghostwriter a royalty credit unless the ghost really wrote it.

/END OF DISCUSSION
Period.

Learn something new everyday.
that wasnt it. this felt as if will felt some type of way about dave.

Just a bit, but even though Will never did stand up, you got two comedians on the same stage who are both prominent AND Will just went at Dave the way Dave goes at cats that come on his show.

Kind of like showing respect to Dave's style, but gettin' a jab or two in there because they loosely share the same profession.

Re: Will Smith shows up David Latterman's show but the Fresh Prince makes an appearan

so a teenaged smith had enough guap to hire rakim as a ghostwriter?

1. Jazzy and Prince were touring long before He's the Rapper... debuted
2. When Summertime cameout Fresh Prince of Belaire was on for at least 1 or 2 seasons

Re: Will Smith shows up David Latterman's show but the Fresh Prince makes an appearan

always gotta give will his props.summertime still bumps to the day.universal indeed

Re: Will Smith shows up David Latterman's show but the Fresh Prince makes an appearan

True but Ra would admitted to writing summer time already

That was a huge hit
what?
Look - I'm not saying Ra wrote it - but if he took cash up front for the song and signed away his right to the work, not only wouldn't he say it was him, he'd end up in court if he did say it was him.

Once an artist signs a "work for hire" contract and gives away a song for compensation its gone and can't be claimed in any way.

there are armies of ghost creative behind the scenes, stop thinking that all writers and producers are getting acknowledged for their creations...

Re: Will Smith shows up David Latterman's show but the Fresh Prince makes an appearan

If im not mistaken nas wrote that!!

Re: Will Smith shows up David Latterman's show but the Fresh Prince makes an appearan

so a teenaged smith had enough guap to hire rakim as a ghostwriter?

 "teenaged"?

Will wasn't actually a kid on Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. He was just playing one.

Don't tell me you thought Kid & Play and Full Force were actually high school kids when they made House Party?

Re: Will Smith shows up David Latterman's show but the Fresh Prince makes an appearan

Skip to 2:11 and check Flava Flav's reaction when Rakim says he didn't write Summertime.

Flav had that "you just gonna lie to the man's face like that" look.

Re: Will Smith shows up David Latterman's show but the Fresh Prince makes an appearan

So... Rakim says he didn't write it, Will & Jeff say Will wrote it and the publishing is in Will's name, but this is still a controversy? Haven't any of you cats ever heard of a rapper just straight up BITIN' another rapper's style? Rakim didn't pen the lyrics, but it's obvious Will intentionally swag jacked his voice, flow, style... the whole steez. Most of the time an artists tries to hide the fact that a ghostwriter wrote their joint. They wouldn't impersonate their ghostwriter. Will Smith, just bit Rakim... not that hard to miss.

Re: Will Smith shows up David Latterman's show but the Fresh Prince makes an appearan

:lol::lol:

dude, way to go. I wasn't being hostile, I was just making a point about burden of proof, and why people would believe certain shit.

Notice in this thread, even after the evidence is presented, Rakim saying it out of his MOUTH, and people are still spinning it to say Rakim is lying. Some haven't read the thread, just read my frst statement and are still believing he wrote it:lol::lol:

So, thats how

Re: Will Smith shows up David Latterman's show but the Fresh Prince makes an appearan

Flav had that "you just gonna lie to the man's face like that" look.

WERD, Flav looked Ra' UP & DOWN like you lying through yo' muthafuckin' TEEFIS!

Man, I get what the 'official' story is . . . but ask Rakim if him and Eric B sold drugs . . . He'd probably lie to you straight faced about that too.

Either way, ain't NO WAY that Will bit dude style that hard and didn't end up in a diss record, at least a subliminal diss . . . BACK THEN ESPECIALLY. Ra' was too cool with that going down.

you're right. I'm amazed it's still going, and I started it

I honestly used to believe that, now I don't. Goes to show you how people are- thats why conspiracies do so well.

Will did a good job and paid tribute tp the God, thats all. Classic song

Re: Will Smith shows up David Latterman's show but the Fresh Prince makes an appearan

will smith BLEW millions of dollars the first time around.. He fucked up that He's The DJ and I'm The Rapper money..

Smith spent money freely around 1988 and 1989 and underpaid his income taxes.[12] The Internal Revenue Service eventually assessed a $2.8 million tax debt against Smith, took many of his possessions, and garnished his income.[13] Smith was nearly bankrupt in 1990, when the NBC television network signed him to a contract and built a sitcom, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, around him.[1

that's fine.

but u do understand the point of GHOSTwriting...correct?

Re: Will Smith shows up David Latterman's show but the Fresh Prince makes an appearan

 this clip doesnt end the discussion.

on 1 hand u have Rakim saying he didn't do it.

on the other hand u have flav... a certified vet looking at R like "what are u talking about fam.... EVERYBODY knows u wrote Summertime."

Exactly. I wrote in big black letters....look at Flava Flav's reaction but I guess people overlooked that part. I don't know if Ra wrote it or not but the way Rakim answered plus Flava's reaction tells me yes.

Re: Will Smith shows up David Latterman's show but the Fresh Prince makes an appearan

jazzy jeff cleared the rumors years ago on twitter... he said will wrote it

Re: Will Smith shows up David Latterman's show but the Fresh Prince makes an appearan

BallerStatus.com:
Have you done ghost-writing for any artists?

Juice:
When I first moved back to Chicago from L.A., I began working with Clubhouse Entertainment. I was part of a writing team that produced "Summertime" by Will Smith...

Re: Will Smith shows up David Latterman's show but the Fresh Prince makes an appearan

It's been mentioned before, but never confirmed. The flow is a carbon copy and would make total sense for Will especially since he was on Fresh Prince of Bel Air and was some years removed from Parents Don't Understand. A ghostwriter would've been right up his alley.

It's Rakim. I don't even need a formal confirmation on that one

Ahhhh shit I forgot about this rumor. I believed it the first time I heard it and believe it now. Its is a Rakim flow.

ahhhhhhh

very interesting take on that, sir.

you are a hip gentleman and a hop scholar.

I didn't overlook it,

you do know you're trying to say that the expression of a crackhead who really coul've been making a face about ANYTHING is specifically about what you think it is.

To me it just looks like he's looking at Rakim all high and shit. Who knows with Flav?

I'll just take the man at his word. Add that to what Jazzy Jeff said, and I'm satisfied.

If anyone has any better proof to the contrary besides a LOOK, I'll be glad to change my mind. Either way, doesn't change the fact that it;s a classic song.

Re: Will Smith shows up David Latterman's show but the Fresh Prince makes an appearan

on the real who really gives a fuck..its a good song and one of the best in history and its ours.

I remember when it came out we didnt even KNOW it WAS Will on there...

but lets say it is true ( hard to believe since Will had Nas and others ghostwrite for him and freely admitted it) but interesting how Rakim never could make a pop song like that for himself?

laughing @ bolded. . . And I'll raise you a: 'Very good of you to tip your brim old bean, one could not but notice, for you would surely have to be of identical cloth . . . as it were.'[Old Blueblood voice].

I'mma just ask y'all, do you REMEMBER this line off the 'Let The Rhythm Hit'Em' CD??

"Cause selling drugs is for handicaps,
I got too many skills besides bustin' rough raps.

If go to jail it won't be for selling keys,
It'll be for murderin' MC's"
. . . :hmm:

Fact: rappers LIE about writing lyrics. And LIE in their lyrics.
Fact: Will Smith is KNOWN to hire ghostwriters, AND paying them well. Ask Nas.
Fact: Will Smith is one sharp guy.
Fact: On the other hand, it's TOTALLY possible that Will Smith bit the whole shit . . . after all, he IS an actor.

But in the age of the BATTLE RAPPER, Rakim aint even FLINCH . . . But he LATER got at NAS, just for writing a song paying homage to the god mc (unauthorized biography of Rakim)?

Man, I been down too long not see that there's something fishy here.

why can't a cigar just be a cigar?

just because smith used a different delivery thats sounds similar to how rakim would do it doesn't mean he didn't write it.

The idea that if will bit him so hard he would have gone after him and because he didn't diss or refer to that song in any way means theres something afoot is dubious at best.

As far as rappers are concerned the fresh prince is a harmless dude. Nas on the other hand has been in beefs and shit with other rappers..remember the nas escobar period?? Rakim going at nas makes sense because dude carried himself like that. The Fresh Prince on the hand... That would be like KRS 1 going at kid or play:lol: It just wouldn't be worth it for rakim to raise a fuss about it.

As for ghostwriting it...why would smith allow it to be known nas GW his shit but not rakim?? whats the difference?
