What's frustrating too is how much the cheap shit (packaged/processed/carbonated) is pushed as far as coupons and deals/sales go. As the saying goes ... "why go to the grocery store when a few blocks away you can get burgers and fries and sit in your damn car while doing so drive thru-style?" ... IF ONLY there were more pushes & incentives made for grocery shoppers to shop smartly/effectively. People that know wassup know the deal. Price-matching / ad-matching / using coupons properly. Imagine a world in which fresh produce, dairy, and lean cuts of meat were readily offering up the quality savings? I look around when grocery shopping and it's saddening and embarassing looking around at peoples' carts FULL of Pizza Pops, Cheetos, Pepsi, Coke, processed meats, 2% milk, and other bagged & boxed/bottled shit (even more upsetting when they have kids with them or are clearly buying for a young family). In a perfect world we'd see people with carts full of plenty of GOOD SHIT ... sprinkled in with some of the cheat foods (junk food cookies, crackers, chips, etc). When you see 95% BULLSHIT mixed in with 5% reasonable in others' carts ... it fucks w/ your brain a bit.

^^^truth

and the quality of produce is just so POOr on average.

I bought some strawberries, blueberries and romaine lettuce the other day (carefully inspected them first)and LITERALLY in less then 2 days they were wilted with MOLD in my fridge.

:smh:

This is a long and old thread but was the lack of transportation brought up?
Even if the grocery store is relatively close, you still have to get there and back, with your grocery. Without a car, you're taking the bus, getting a ride from a friend (who might expect something for their aid), or paying for a cab. When your options are limited, you get food that will last and won't be wasted and that's often processed food that's unhealthy.

^^ I know Dave but it seems the conditions keep getting worse so I decided to keep it up cause there were some good suggestions in in.

Transport is a VERY interesting point cause I have to actually travel 20 min to get the GOOD PRODUCE or hit a farmer's market after work.

I'm not knocking it or you when I said that. I like for good thread to be bumped, porn or not. But I didn't want to type that out if it's already been chopped up or if I'd said it before and forgot. I scanned the 6 pgs and didn't see transportation hit on too much and wanted to throw that angle in.
It dawned on me a while ago passing by people at busstops with bags of grocery and thinking that's a shitty way to have to get to and from the grocery store.

You're into fitness. You know about boneless skinless chicken breasts. Them things stay on sale. If they're good enough for bodybuilders, athletes and fitness heads, they're good enough for poor people looking to be healthy.

Healthy items are on sale all the time. The problem is healthy food is boring. If it wasn't, everyone would be walking around here looking great. Who wouldn't want to sit down to a good plate of mac and cheese, fried chicken with works, and finish off a New York Cheesecake everyday? It's better than eating that grilled chicken breast, brown rice, and a fucking banana.

IMHO pop tastes great. I don't drink it often, but at the movies I get the king size and love that shit. I can see why people drink it every fucking day.

I think the biggest problem is simply how good bad shit tastes. Cost is just an excuse. Sales are out there all the time.

I eat Cheetos from time to time. They taste fucking great!

But I don't choose them OVER anything, especially vegetables.

But imagine, when they start growing vegetables that taste like Cheetos!!!

Wendy's Pulls Soda From Kids Meals

popkid_caro_article-small_38242.jpg

when I was in middle school, my mom worked long days as a hospital administrator and attended graduate school at night. Together, we left home for work and school near dawn. It was often late at night, after she’d attended her own classes, that my mother would help me and my brother with homework and engage us in kitchen table conversations about current events.

My mom seemed to magically stretch minutes into hours. She carved quality time in the crevasses of an overpacked day. My mom is also an amazing cook and on the weekends and on nights when she didn't have class, we ate great healthy meals. Spinach was our favorite because it would make us strong like Popeye! But, on many, many late nights, we ate fast food.

Like 96% of Americans, our family sometimes relied on the convenience and cost of places like McDonald's, Burger King, and Wendy's. My mom was raised on slow cooked food in Texas, but as a divorced mom of two students in New York city, She sometimes had to chose between spending the tiny amount of time she had after graduate school class helping us with our coursework or cooking.

When I see fast food meals for kids taking steps to improve, I think about all of the moms and dads who are just like my mom, parents who want to feed their families fresh good food every night of the week, but sometimes need quick meals that are affordable. It’s not always easy to get healthy, quick and affordable food.

In fact, one of the most unhealthy items on kids meal menus today is soda. So when Wendy's listened to tens of thousands of moms and recently announced they're dropping soda from their kids' meals menu, I know this will mean less sugary drinks for millions of kids every day and, most importantly, it will mean more healthy options for parents and kids.

This is a big deal. Sugar-sweetened beverages are the single largest source of calories in children’s diets and provide nearly half of their added sugars intake. Soda and other sugary drinks promote obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. Drinking just one additional sugary drink every day increases a child’s odds of becoming obese. Indeed, with one in three children overweight or obese in the United States, it doesn't make sense to automatically include sugary beverages in restaurant meals for young children. And parents certainly shouldn't have to pay more to buy their kids a healthier drink option than soda.

We'd love to live in a world where none of us ever have to eat fast food, where we all have the time and resources to prepare nutritious meals for our kids every night of the week. But that's just not the realty for so many parents; and these small steps can equal big change as we fight for the health of our children.

Join us as we encourage Burger King to follow Wendy's and McDonald's lead. Kids' menus should offer healthy drink options for kids, not focus on sugary sodas. Parents have spoken and two out of three of the country's biggest fast food chains agree. Our kids deserve our advocacy and the healthiest food choices and environments possible!

I don't know what it's like everywhere else but in Baltimore the hood supermarkets are known for having rotten produce. I'm not surprised at living close to one doesn't mean people eat more fruits and vegetables
