Why people in low-income areas choose Cheetos over fresh vegetables

More supermarkets don't mean better health

Living close to supermarkets and grocery stores did not mean that urban dwellers ate more fruits and vegetables, or had a healthier overall diet, according to a U.S. study.

http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/...76B04L20110712

Having more fast-food restaurants nearby, though, did mean that low-income men ate at the chain restaurants more often, the study in Archives of Internal Medicine said.

Researchers and policymakers think "food deserts" -- poor neighborhoods with few or no healthy food options -- may be linked to the obesity epidemic. The problem hasn't been easy to solve, however, especially because supermarkets and health-food stores are reluctant to open branches in low-income areas.

But the link between food access and what people eat is complicated, said study author Penny Gordon-Larsen, of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

"It's not simply enough to introduce a grocery store," she told Reuters Health.

"Our findings provide some evidence for zoning restrictions on fast food restaurants within 3 km of low-income residents but suggest that increased access to food stores may require complementary or alternative strategies to promote dietary behavior change," she and her colleagues wrote.

The study tracked about 5,000 young adults living in four cities: Birmingham, Alabama, Chicago, Illinois, Minneapolis, Minnesota and Oakland, California.

Starting in 1985, researchers surveyed the participants every few years about their eating habits, including their intake of fruits and vegetables, and how often they visited fast-food restaurants.

At the same time, the researchers calculated how many fast-food chain restaurants, grocery stores, and supermarkets were within walking or short driving distance from each person's home.

For low-income men in the study, living close to lots of fast-food restaurants meant they ate at those restaurants more often -- but there was only a weak link for middle-income people, and no clear link for those with the highest incomes.

Though the study did not measure how many times people actually went to fast food restaurants, a past study from the same cities showed that on average, young adults visited fast food restaurants once or twice a week.

In general, having more supermarkets or grocery stores nearby did not influence how well residents followed guidelines on fruit and vegetable intake, nor how healthy their diets were overall.

It may be that there's a lot of variability in those grocery stores, including what fresh produce they sell and how expensive it is, the researchers wrote, meaning that more such stores might not have enough of an impact.

"There are a lot of reasons that food access is an issue, but it's still quite unclear as to what the actual effect (of bringing in new supermarkets) would be on people's eating habits," said Daniel Block, who studies food access and behavior at Chicago State University and wasn't involved in the study.

He suggested thinking "outside the supermarket box," suggesting community gardens as a non-traditional way of promoting healthy eating and bringing people together.

Gordon-Larsen said more research is needed to see how people make decisions about what to eat and where to buy it, but that broader efforts -- such as community education and getting stores to promote more healthy food options -- may be needed.

"We're talking about a top-to-bottom approach that would be important," she added. SOURCE: bit.ly/rdF0U6

I was sitting in the parking lot of 7-11 the other day

watching these elementary school aged kids

You would be amazed at how many of these youngans live off chips and sodas.

The $2.00 hood meal

Shit is sad

now or laters , skittles and starburst were made by dentist for the sole purpose of rotting kids teeth so they would get paid

You're like 50 right? What did kids eat back in your days? What did your parents eat in their days?

Unhealthy foods isn't the problem, the excessive consumption is.

Went shopping the other day and saw this women who was on food stamps and or wic. She was fat looking unhealthy with four fat children, and in their cart they had nothing but junk food.:smh:
I know there are going to be those who say, so what why give a fuck what the next person is eating, all that is fine and dandy, except when those motherfuckers get sick and have to be hospitalized who is going to foot the bill?
Imagine if you are a hard worker and try to stay fit, all your life, however you suddenly get sick and the doctor tells you the hospital cant help you because you are not properly covered. How will it make you feel that someone who could care less about their health, someone who is most likely to fuck it it up if they ever get better, gets treated while you have to suffer.
Sorry to say but this is the reality for millions of people in this country and in these hard times, people will only put up with so much bullshit.

I did the same thing as a kid. We all did (my friends and peers). After school we ran to the local corner store and/or pizza joint and went foolish with it. Its what kids do man. Always has been, probably always will be. Other than a few cavities there were really no long term effects. As you grow up most of us learn better and do better.

As a grown fucking man if you dont have proper coverage then that shits on you. Despite what you may be led to believe, poor folk are not the reason for you problems bro.

Its cheaper. Yet the family that wont spend that little extra on healthy food somehow buys brand name clothes and tennis shoes for their kids.

its cheaper and i think another thing is that parents nowadays are oftnetimes so young and they are the type to take the path of least resistance. they probably would like for their kids to eat healthy but the second after the kid complains they just throw some garbage in the microwave and call it a day.

it is more convenient you can take your access card to the corner store and buy chips and soda galore instead of taking time out of your cell phone gossip hour to drive to the supermarket to buy something nutritional with that card.

you want people to eat a little healthier you should put some tougher restriction on what one can buy with an access card. right now you can buy anything except cooked foods.

And most inner city stores don't sell fresh fruit or vegetables.
that is why there is always such a big stink over food deserts that don't have a grocery store.

and when you find the rare store that does carry it,it tends to be very over priced.

my daughter loves fruit and eats it until its gone. she loves wendy's because they sell those fruit salads

You're an idiot. Both are the problem. If you can only afford unhealthy processed food WTF else are you going to consume?
The whole food/agricultural system is fucked up. Not to mention the American mentality of large portions and meat eating. It's a systemic and cultural problem.

most inner cities have fruit and veggie voucher programs that you can get free fruit and veggies monthly, but most times they go unused because most people dont know of these things.

Easier said than done, but let you lose a loved one due to not being able to foot the bill, and I am sure you will not be so kind to people those fat fuckers who abusing the system.

You can eat healthy and not break your bank if you know what you are doing. Number one you must eat in moderation, and stop being lazy, meaning cook your food, and plan your meals correctly. What they need to do is learn to manage what they consume as opposed to eat every time their fat asses what to stuff their face. But sadly this takes a bit of discipline, something they are mostly lacking or they would not be in the situation they are in now.

I was just going to say I had never heard of such program.

Do they deliver them to the house or do people have to find there way to a real grocery store (super market)

if so that is another problem with all the supermarkets being in the suburbs and not readily accessible.

Still wouldn't be an excuse for not getting there..priorities take effort

This is really a waste of a topic.

What is discussing this shit going to do? Some people CAN do better, but don't care to. Trying to create some dietary Utopia in a country of excess is laughable, at best.

Eat. Drink. Fuck. Die. Make Room For The Next.

no they dont deliver

the vouchers are usually picked up at a central neighborhood location then i believe they are accepted anywhere that sells fruit and veggies

Its a shame, and anyone that thinks theres nothing wrong with junk food, I'll see you when you get heart disease...:smh::lol:

This is true unfortunately...Its not by coincidence either. The low income areas are like that for a reason.

lack of knowledge

lack of fresh vegetables

lack of money

My moms was healthy to the point we hated it growing up
and at that age we ate what she fed us or school lunch

I can remember eating Tofu in the late 70s early 80s:angry:

moms had no sweets when we were kids :smh:

Only cereal we had was grape nuts or wheaties and we had to use honey.

We had no PBJ it was PBH :smh:

Sugar really does make you soft....its bad for muscle.

Any athlete should stay away from sugar.

DO THIS: Stretch or try to touch your knees with your forehead.

Stay off sugar for two week and then do it...watch what happens.

I see grown ass men eating honey buns i be like :smh:

White Sugar is straight garbage for muscles.

But not Trader Joes. Once I stopped fucking with Whole Foods and started shopping at Trader Joes, I saved so much fucking money. The problem is, there's little to no access to TJ in a lot of areas if you don't drive.

One thing in common most of those families have no mother, and it nothing but kids gone wild with moms acting like a big ass kid herself.
