I'm saying a lot of people on this board spend a lot of time on the board criticizing BET and rap music. However we were raised on "positive TV shows" during the middle of the crack epidemic. You can't get anymore positive than the Cosby Show. How come people didn't strive to be Cliff Huxtable instead of Luther Campbell? Why didn't marriage rates improve? So obviously the problem is a lot deeper than BET or rap music. Rap music and BET are the result of our problems, not the cause. Shit was fucked up before Tip Drill.

I think that was the end of the encouraging generation. A generation that worked hard for their middle/upper class status, who were encouraged by THEIR parents to EARN a better life. THEIR parents worked hard, and had hope for their children, though some of that hope may have been passed on with a sense of false entitlement.

No one does that for children anymore. Most of the parents are children, with so much financial debt, that they don't have hope of ever getting from up under it. Lack of education, and they don't pass on any hope of a better life.

Ours is the first generation to do worse than it's parents.

We haven't had freedom for very long. We don't even have one generation of freedom yet. My mother went to segregated schools. My generation is probably the first generation to grow up under the guise of equality.

To me the question "why isn't black america better" is part of the problem and the wrong approach. You don't look at a fifth grader and ask him why he doesn't know calculus yet. Just because one generation removed from Jim crow we haven't figured out the solution doesn't mean it's not coming. I think the unrealistic expectation that our community should be morally, economically and politically perfect leads us to look for causes today instead of looking at our history. Our history in America is why the black community has issues. We want a quick fix so we look for causes that are easily changeable like rap music.

In my opinion we have to get away from the quick fix and realize that the solution to the problems in black America do not lie with the adults living. This is a generational problem that must be fixed with a generational solution. The next generation of children will not listen to the hip-hop of today they will create the hip-hop of tommorow.

So to me the question why isn't it better infers a fixable cause. Since to me the cause is historic I'm not looking to fix black America tommorow or in 10 years. 20 years from now when my son is 31 I'll be able to tell what I've done for black America.

Good post. I try to tell people that Jim Crow was during many of our parents generation. It really wasn't that long ago. Many of our parents had to go to the "black water fountain". When they were fighting during the civil rights movement, they weren't necessarily fighting for themselves, they were fighting for those of us now. I feel we've let them down, because we haven't continued what they started.
