Why Eddie Murphy's SNL40 part was "awkward' - he refused to be Bill Cosby in sketch

Writing extensively about preparations for the special anniversary show on Twitter, Macdonald - who reprised his impression of Burt Reynolds - said Murphy was close to accepting the idea, after discussions with mutual friend Brett Ratner.

"The first thing to do is cut down the number of contestant/impressions and the second is to contact Eddie and to convince him to do it," he explained.

"And on and on it went. I had not spoken to Eddie or @BrettRatner. I was dead sure Eddie would do it. Most others were not."

Murphy ultimately decided against the sketch, leaving Kenan Thompson to take the role instead.

"We talk in his dressing room a good hour. When it's over, I'm convinced he'll do it. He doesn't," Macdonald continued.

"He knew the laughs would bring the house down. Eddie Murphy knows what will work on SNL better than any one.

"Eddie decides the laughs are not worth it. He will not kick a man when he is down."

Despite rejecting the idea, Macdonald praises Murphy, describing him as "the coolest, a rockstar even in a room with actual rockstars".

The 53-year-old actor did deliver a brief speech during Sunday's (February 15) show, after a 30-year absence.

new found respect for Eddie...

he was becoming too hollyweird

but it looks like he is starting

to find himself again...

Re: Why Eddie Murphy's SNL40 part was "awkward' - he refused to be Bill Cosby in sket

Why would they decide to do a sketch dumping on Cosby? Who's idea was that anyway? Terrible idea. Glad he did not do it. There was still plenty he could have done tho without stepping into the whole Cosby mess anyway.

Eddie refused to be Their Coon....., how are they going to use one Black comic legend to attack another Black comic legend? huh? I can see why he hasn't been back.

Re: Why Eddie Murphy's SNL40 part was "awkward' - he refused to be Bill Cosby in sket

awesome. Eddie is at the fuck you point in his life. Dude was a fucking mega star before he was old enough to drink.

He is SNL and I'm glad that he didn't do it

every black dude on SNL after him was in his shadow and never even came close to living up to what he did.

He made fun of Cosby but respects him

too much to shuck and jive for Lorne

Chris Rock really should've just introduced him how he did and then Eddie get out there and hit them with the thanks for coming out god bless and goodnight

Yeah, there is always SOMEONE waiting and willing to be the White man's coon used to tear down another Black man, but I have a new found respect for Eddie because he wouldn't be the one to do it. Kenan is on some whole other side of coon, sadly. But it is a matter of the right thing and the wrong thing AND self-respect, which Kenan doesn't have a shred of.

Re: Why Eddie Murphy's SNL40 part was "awkward' - he refused to be Bill Cosby in sket

So after 30 years they bring him back to do a sketch to insult Cosby? These cacs just don't fuckin get it

Eddie could've done one of his vintage sketches as a throw back but nah these clowns thought it would be funny to insult Bill
